A late posting on the Gals due to a cable outage at our house yesterday. Only an old fashion antenna saved last night from being a disaster with no AI.
I found the show to be an interesting mixed bag of talent. Some are fading fast while a few others are just starting to hit their stride.
Paris: Poor Paris. She started off in this competition with so much power but I fear her age is working against her. Laboring through this Gloria Estefan song, it appears that the hectic schedule for American Idol may be taking a toll on her voice. I found it shaky and off key in many parts. It actually seemed like she was in pain. The performance was still fun to watch but only when the mute button was depressed.
Slightly less than Just OK for me, Paris gets a
5.
Lisa: She is still singing songs that would be best left to someone with a few more years under their belt but continues on impressing me. The song, Where I Stand (?) was a bit hard to follow but her voice seemed to hit every note perfectly. Who dresses this girl for the show? Give them a raise! She looked wonderful and is just such a joy to watch.
For consistency from week to week, I give her an
8.
Melissa: What is it with these Tampa girls? Melissa had her break out week last night with What About Love just like Jessica did last year with The Boys Are Back in Town. I was totally taken in by her performance. It befuddles me why Simon put down her performance with his screaming remark yet Kellie who was screaming just as much was so wonderful in his eyes. Is Melissa not blond enough for you Simon?
At any rate, for certainly her best performance to date, Melissa gets an
8
Kinnik: I dont know what song she sang and her performance left me not caring. It was dreary and forgettable as was her rendition of it. The middle of this piece had me pulling my hair out!
Sorry Kinnik but its back to vocal lessons for you. She gets a
4.
Katharine: And now a news update: The courts have passed a law that no white chicks can sing an Aretha Franklin song without special dispensation from the previously mentioned singer.
I found her soulless performance a parody of the original, more like something Id expect to see on Saturday Night Live. Singing Aretha like that should be a Capital Offense! If there was anything good about all of this, it was the back up singers who should have been left to sing is on their own. Now THEY rock!
OK, she was in key and looked nice so Barbie, umm Katharine, gets a
6.
Ayla: Didnt recognize the song and for the first time it seemed to be a bit out of her range. Had to agree with the judges on this one, a 5 note song is not the way to win AI. After a too low beginning, she seemed to pick it up a bit and she wowed me with her super heels being a tall girl myself. Ayla gets a
7 but I expect to see her do better next week if shes still with us.
Mandisa: Why is this lady even on this show? She is just so far out in front of the rest. Singing Im Every Woman, I was surprised the theater was left standing after her powerful performance. It made me wish for an encore, perhaps a real version of Think.
Great vocal presence and looking fabulous, Mandisa gets the one and only
10 of the evening.
Kellie: Minx or Mink? Can she really be that countrified? Umm, maybe or maybe not, it doesnt matter, at least not yet. She was right on with her rendition of I'm the only one. Except for a little pitch problem at the very end of the song and some ongoing rhythm issues, she delivered the whole package. Her nerves were not a player this week either.
For grabbing the attention of every guy in the room, Kellie gets a
9.
Who I voted for:
Mandisa: many, many times.
Melissa: A couple of times.
Who I think will be going home:
Kinnik for sure.
Lots of maybes: Paris, Katharine, Ayla, Melissa.
As always, JMHO.
