American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

I think Simon is correct about Melissa. Whether she should go this week or next, sure we can quibble over that, but she's not the next American Idol.

Not going to quibble as to who goes home next. I like Melissa a lot, but I think that when the top 12 are competing, she may have a hard time. It will be interesting to see who grows each week when they may not be staying in a comfort zone, and who can make the transition. That's when I start picking my favorite competitors.

agreed....kinnik is up too

Mandisa has a star quality that is beyond the others so far they cannot catch up. She probably won't win tho. The best singer (think season one) is not always the winner.

Mandisa is a great singer, but, as is consistently said on-air, it isn't only about the singing. The name of the show contains the word "Idol" -- it implies that the winner is someone people want to look up to. I don't think Mandisa has "the whole package" and even excelling in two or three of the qualities doesn't necessary make up for short-falls in other qualities.

If you're talking about weight I have one word for you, Rueben.

Love, love, love, love Ayla!!!!!! I just love the song she sang and I love the way she sang it. I admit I have loved her since way before American Idol since she is a local girl but she is doing so,so, so well!!! I'll be so happy to see her in the top 12, then we can go see her on tour this summer. She did loosen up a bit, because that's what they told her to do and she was fun but that just wasn't enough for the judges. Why do they keep saying how hard she works as if that's a bad thing.

People, HARD WORK TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS IS A GOOD THING!!!!!!! She's taking this competition seriously and she is a competitor! After she sings you see her "game face" when she deals with the judges. Finally, keep in mind she's still one of the "young ones". Maybe she is poised beyond her years and not the least bit silly but some of us like "cool and composed". :cool1:

This is true, like REUBEN for example, where is he now? :confused3 Clay has way more star quality than he did!

Well dialidol tends to not be statistically correct. The last few weeks they had others in the bottom which were not booted off. For example Becky Odaonahue was #6 0r #7 when she was booted.

that is just a random sampler of one person. I'm a tad rusty on my statistical sampling, but wouldn't it be from more than one person after a specific time frame all over the US?

That being said, I'm not suprised if those wind up to be the final two. The performances were just meh.

I don't think it is from one person, but instead from a variety of people who then tabulate their results. Busy phone lines tend to differ in different areas, so the accuracy is not precise. If they have more people calling from a specific area where a contestant is from, that contestant's line will be busier.

Actually it's not one person. You can download the software to help them compile the statistics on that site.

When you look at the past weeks "bootings" - don't look at their rank. That is misleading. Look at the actual percentages they are at. Statistics is not an exact science and you are looking at an error margin of +/- 3%. The bottom 7 or 8 of the girls that week were really not that far away from each other % wise. Not like this week where you see a pretty substantial difference between the % that 6th place received vs 7 and 8. What is it like 10% Way above the error margin.

If the bottom 2 are as dialidol predicted, I think this site can be used to estimate the people being eliminated. When the bottom of the group is close in %, you won't know for sure, but you will know who is in trouble.

And if you watched the site last night, you could see the totals update every few minutes. Kellie started out with a commanding 66% in the beginning at the end of east coast voting. She dropped down to 47% after the west coast was done. This is a huge drop for her over the past week. Methinks Simon ticked off a few too many Carrie fans and I'm wondering if there was a method to his madness.

I think the judges ref to work and Ayla means she's not a natural. She's having to work hard each week. I can't put my finger on it but there is just something about her I don't like. I hated the song choice last night - the previous week's she has sounded awesome.

I think Kinnik will be gone and not sure about the other...there were a couple I thought could be gone.

Its been so obvious since last Thursday at 9pm that the next to would go would be Kinnik and Melissa. Its so obvious that the producers and judges have wanted the Final 6 girls to be mandisa, Kellie, Lisa, Paris, Ayla, and Katharine since day 1. I mean, look at the 2 Simon told to pack their bags. Melissa wasn't even bad. Kinnik sealed her fate last night, she was hideous, but Melissa was very good. It would be awesome to see her get in over ayla, Lisa, or even Paris, but tis not going to happen. It should happen, but won't.

Quick note about DialIdol.com. Its more than just 1 person voting. Theres a program you d/l and vote through that program and it tallies your votes. So it tallies votes from the people using that program. Its still a miniscule sample of voters though, so its not the most accurate system.

Kellie. She sure has performed live before. I was cringing last night when she was being judged. She came across as so phoney and fake to me.

Wow, a Mandisa weight comment. We need to look past looks right now, because Mandisa is by far the most talented female. That doesn't mean she'll win or even make it that far, but she is talented and deserves better than rash opinions that she won't make it far because of her looks.

Word!

Oh geez.. I've spent too much time over on TWOP. :rotfl:

I don't think her weight will play an issue. There are successful female singers who don't look like Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson. Think Aretha, Patti LaBelle.

Heck, even Carnie Wilson was bigger than Mandisa when Wilson Phillips was at it's peak.

I don't think weight has as much of an influence in the music industry as it does in the film industry - where it is a death sentence if you aren't a size 2. :sad2:

If you're talking about weight I have one word for you, Rueben.
And I have one word for you: Gender. The American public seems to be far more willing to embrace a teddy bear like Ruben. Regardless, Ruben overcame the weight issue -- maybe Mandisa can too, but it isn't likely, just like Ruben's victory wasn't likely.

Guy Spoilers for everyone but Bucky. Highlight text to see song choices.

Will Makar - "How Sweet It Is" by James Taylor
Taylor Hicks - "Taking It Too the Streets" by Michael McDonald
Gedeon McKinney - "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge
Kevin Covais - "Vincent" by Don McClean
Chris Daughtry - "Broken" by Seether
Ace Young - "Butterfly" by Michael Jackson
Elliott Yamin - "Heaven" by Bryan Adams

I usually agree with Simon, but I thought it was unfair for him to say Melissa and Kinnick wer going home before he had even heard the rest of them sing last night. There could have been others who totally bombed after them. He was just trying to manipulate the votes as always. Sadly, it usually works. I thought Melissa was pretty good last night. I enjoyed her performance more than Paris and Ayla's.

For me. I think Kellie's "li'l ole me country bumpkin" act is gettting a little old. She is from North Carolina, not a third world country. Surely they have salmon in NC. Also, Simon's comment about last year's winner was a little out of line.

Simon has, in the past, said things like, "That was so ghastly that I think you just gave XXXX a repreive for this week."
