gometros - Thanks for pointing out that I made an error - I obviously meant to say 'parentheses' and not 'italics.' I posted very quickly on the way to school, never should have done that, so thanks for pointing that out.
I regards to other posters who are questioning whether or not people are acting, etc. on AI, I never said I was a doctor, which means I can't diagnose people either. I approached this as someone trained in observation and assessment - people who present with behaviour, learning or mental challenges have similar ways about them. You don't need to watch them for hours, a few seconds is all that is necessary sometimes, and watching some of the AI contestants this week really drove this point home for me (and my hubby, by the way).
For example, we can look at their speech patterns, focusing abilities, anger issues, delusional about talents/abilities, etc. Does it mean that if others present with these symptoms that they are 'challenged' in some way? Of course not! I commented that some of the contestants (more and more each year it seems) are presenting with these behaviours and in my expertise as a special education teacher who sees these same people each and every day in my office, it is more than likely not an act. Some of the contestants are definitely acting, and it's easy to pick them out, but AI is exploiting gender confused people for example because they have recognized that there are personal issues at hand. It's not responsible IMHO to do this, and this is why I am angry with AI - and I've received a few PMs from other DIS members who agree with me as well, so obviously, others are recognizing this as well.
For those of you who like the show, good for you. For those of you who think everyone is acting and no one is unstable in any way, shape or form, I would beg to differ. It doesn't matter if one has to sign a waiver to be on AI or not, if you can't understand what you are signing, then what's the point? And you can bet AI absolutely knows this, since so many of you are watching the show exploit the heck out of emotionally fragile people each and every week. Anyone remember Jerry Springer? Do you think most of those people were rational, stable individuals? AI is smart and savvy with what they are doing, and it's very socially responsible, IMHO to recognize this as being unacceptable. I hate to see what the future of television holds, but since so many of you have been sucked in by AI's tactics, I can only imagine!!
