American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I don't like how they made them choose 2 songs to sing that they have already sung this season. I wanted to hear something new! Every other season they sang all new songs, along with the single.

Anyways, I really like both of them and wouldn't mind seeing either one win. Although I did make a bet with my boss that Taylor would win because I definitely think he has a bigger fanbase, so I'd rather see him win. I hate voting because I really do like both of them, but I got one vote in for Taylor before Ryan announced the lines were open.

They usually sing one new song, one old song and the idol song. Last year Carrie resung Independance Day and Bo resung Vehicle. I think Fantasia resung Summertime and Diana sang Don't Cry out Loud. I can't remember what happened before that but I think Clay and Ruben followed the same pattern. They do the same thing on Canadian Idol. One old, one new, one bad - the idol song (haha)

I admit to not really watching this season as closely as I have in the past.

Both the original songs were vomit inducing. Neither one was good. Did both Taylor and Kat do ok? Yes. However neither song was 'right' for either singer nor were they very good songs in the first place.

I didn't love either of the 'repeat' songs. Since I haven't been watching this was my first experience seeing the preformances. I was underwhelmed to say the least. For me, Taylor's 1st song was the best. Katherine's 1st song was boring and since I've never heard it before, I thought it was a really poor choice.

Katherine did a good job vocally with 'over the rainbow' but that was possibly the worst arrangement of that song I have ever heard. Taylor's Levon was just ok.

All and all pretty underwhelmed. Katherine would be easier to market but Taylor seems to have a huge fan base. I really think it is a coin toss.

One of DH's reporters is there and I can't wait to hear his recap.

Why is it that Kat played it safe and Taylor didn't? Didn't he sing those songs before as well? I'm a Taylor fan from the very beginning, and I want him to win, but I don't understand why everyone is being so hard on Katharine. Doesn't it make sense that she would choose the songs she got the best feed back on? I don't feel cheated. I was happy to hear her sing those songs again. When you buy a CD isn't the whole idea to be able to listen to the songs you like over and over again?

That's what I want to know too! They both sang songs they previously sang before. Why wouldn't they want to sing songs that they nailed the first time around? They are trying to win a competition NOT lose it! It has been that way with the other Idol shows too...not just something Katharine decided to do on her won.

Katherine played it safe IMO by singing songs that were more recent. She did Somewhere Over the Rainbow last week and Black Horse three weeks ago so she was used to performing them. Taylor used songs that he sang much earlier in the competition. I was annoyed that the camera paid more attention to Kat's family than Taylor's. I hated both singles but I thought Taylor did a better job selling the song. I haven't been able to vote for Taylor all night.

I have tried over 200 times to get through to vote for Taylor on the 04 # finally got through 1 time. My dh got through 5 times on the 06#. I think they both did a great job, but I really think Taylor did the best. Alot of people must be voting.

I think we've covered why she sang those songs. Not to play it safe, but because she got by far the best feedback on them (this board as well). It shouldn't matter when she sang them or be punished because they're recent. Maybe she's just been coming on strong lately.

Her outfit and hair were too wierd to say the least. I have seen her look better!

Didn't Fantasia sing Summertime for the final show? I thought that they always sang at least one song from the competition.

Well I was thinking of Season 2 when I know they did 2 new songs. Clay sang Unchained Melody and Here, There, and Everywhere (I have no idea if that's the name of the song but that's how it went). He never sang those songs during the season. I honestly don't remember the last 2 seasons though. I was just so obsessed with Clay and Season 2 that I remember everything he sang for every week.

Okay, a west-coaster here, who just watched the show.

The first two songs I thought Taylor was bad on both and Katherine sounded pretty good.

The final song, Katherine was AWFUL. The first part of Taylor's he didn't sound very good, but the last half he did very well, I thought. He did get the better song though. Is it my imagination, or are they setting Katherine up to fail? People have been choosing some lousy songs for her. Taylor could not have pulled of her song tonight either.

I still don't care who wins, but I'm looking forward to the final so I can see all the guest singers!

West-coaster just watching on tivo, so I'm a little behind too. I think Katheryn sounds totally pitchy on her last song. Very painful for me. I'm sure her fans are voting like crazy based on her other performances, but that was a horrible last sing for her to end the entire competition.

I only got through 2 times for Katharine tonight. I statrted voting at 10:30 and kept up pretty steady through ending time. I tried line 1 and didn;t get through at all, line 3 was where I got my 2 calls in. Line 5 I kept getting a message that it wasn't available in my calling area! . Maybe the circuits were overloaded.

I like both of them, but I think Katharine fits the Idol machine better, she will be more of a person they could mold to what they want. I can't see Taylor letting anyone tell him what to do music wise...and I would hate to see him be another Bo.

I can only imagine how those numbers would be if Elliott was still in the competition.

I'm not a Taylor fan or a Kat fan and really don't care who wins. (Didn't vote either,) but I'm noticing that Kat is really getting slammed on this board.

I agree that Taylor won round 1, but I think Kat without question won Round 2. I thought Taylor's Levon was absolutely boring. He did nothing with that song and I can't believe no one here has mentioned it.
I think Round 3 goes to Taylor also. Though I didn't like either song, Taylor's was a better performance.

It's sad that whoever wins will be put on the "hollywood skeletal diet" immediately. By the time their albums are released we won't be able to recognize them.

You mean the same diet Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia and Carrie had to go on?

I don't think any of them looks like a skeleton, especially Ruben. Clay doesn't count, he was always skinny.

Dh and I were watching last night and we decided that America did Chris a favor by sending him home.... Both of the Idol songs were totally cheese-ball... I'm sure Chris would have done something to "spice it up" but there is probably only so much they can do.
