American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I'm one of the ones that think that Elliott is completely outclassed in this final four (and, indeed, in the final five as well). ....He sings entirely from his throat, rather than his diaphragm...

Um, so does, Chris. That is he screams (oops sings) entirely from his throat rather than his diaphragm.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you like listening to Elliott than that's "all good". But personally, I find his vibrato annoying in the extreme, and don't think he stands a chance of being any more successful than, say, any of the other Idol finalists that didn't go on to win. Some of them sold as many as 100,000 albums...but that's a long way from having a successful music career.

Absolutely agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion and if they like listening too Chris scream a song, then that's all good. I find Chris' screaming style of singing extremely annoying but agree that he is more marketable than Elliot.

dolphindan feels compelled to correct anyone that says Elliott is talented and has a great voice. He just can't let it go.

Here's one for you Dan:

That is an interesting point to ponder: I do believe that this Final Four is the best four people who competed this year, unlike some previous years, where some lesser singer managed to slip into the Final Four.

Again sorry I do not agree

There is no way Elliott is better than Mandissa, Ayla, Paris....sorry JMHO....but it is a better final four than other seasons...well hopefully yhe top 3 will be right Taylor, Chris and Kat....then i will say that is the best 3 ever

:lmao: Probably one of the funniest comments I've seen on this thread!

I'm happy for all 4 - each has their appeal, even if each doesn't appeal to me, I understand that others see it.

Funny....I laughed too...maybe I have been harsh...just to let everyone know I have gone back and listened to all of Elliotts performances and only once have I thought....that was pretty good....I have tried....just dont like his voice

Oooooo... kewl!!! :thumbsup2

If it means anything to anyone....I felt the same way about Fantasia as i do about Elliott....but this season is the 1st season I will be happy with 3 winners.....Taylor, Chris, or Kat....other season there was only one person I wanted to win....season 1....I cant ever call her name...finished 3rd....Mr. Studdard in season 2, could care less in season 3, I guess I was pulling for degarmo, Carrie last season....

I think Kelly was by far the best choice in season one, no one came close...who came in third? Nikki McKibbin? I did not like her. Season two was my second favorite (this season being my favorite :) ). I liked Ruben, Clay and Kimberly (Locke) a lot, they were all great although I must admit I only bought Clay and Kimberly's CD's. When Fantasia won I did not really care for anyone that year - especially her. In all fairness, I do recall her singing "Summertime" and almost being moved to tears it was that good. Last season I liked Carrie and Bo. They are both very talented. This time I really like the final four. Did not care for Paris too much, but she is cute and sings "ok". I would be happy with any of the four winning, but it seems the websites out there have already determined it will be Chris vs. Taylor in the finals. I will vote for whoever does the best each week, isn't that what it is all about at this stage of the game? I guess performance over the longhaul also factors into it. Can't wait to see who wins!

I agree that Ayla was good, but I still think Elliott is just as good, and both were significantly better overall potential stars than Mandisa.

I'm speechless

The final four is right. Mandisa coulda been there but her song choices were really bad! She had the pipes, just lost the crowd. When you're an entertainer, you gotta know your audience. All the final four can sing but WILL they? Taylor is immature as an entertainer, he really doesn't have what it takes to go the long haul due to his REALLY bad dancing and moves. There can not be another Joe Cocker. At this point, people are just voting for him to vote for him, not based on his performances. Cat is the ONLY one who consistantly really sings. She's trained and has personality. Her voice holds up and with 'people' to choose wardrobe and makeup(like Kelly Clarkson has) she could really do some wonderful things. Chris screams and will lose his voice or damage his throat soon if he doesn't learn to really sing into his head and use his diaphragm. He badly needs a singing coach or he's a goner. Elliott is a big band singer and there is just no "Idol" spot for him in that genre. He's very good but just can not appeal to the masses in the end.

When I think about it Kat is the only one that is just really, really typical American idol -- Taylor sure isn't any more than Elliot and even Chris has an edge that most pop stars don't have.

I'm a little proud of America for choosing these 4 -- this is what happens when a record company isn't shoving someone down our throats and telling us who to like, maybe? Kat is diva-ish, but the rest are pretty normal guys.

About Elliot, the judges know he has the best voice, they've said as much. Like someone else said, he just doesn't have the mass appeal. Good for you Elliot, with your lack of polish and bad haircut (it's getting better, LOL) for making America notice you. Maybe he isn't "american idol", exactly, but he has a bright future ahead of him.

I agree with the comments about Mandissa but she had more potential I thought than Elliott....her size might have hurt her but Rubeun wasnt small...so I have a hard time with that issue....I just think her fan support wasnt there or took a long time to get to know her....I still say her and Paris are better singers than Elliott...As far as Taylor goes I dont think people are voting just to vote for him...just for the heck of it??? come on....the kid can sing....I also think his draw is his quirkiness....I love to watch him on stage but i do think all of it takes away form his voice as Simon recently said...people focus so much on what he does instead of what he is singing....but go listen to some of his songs from his album...especially Georgia on my mind....He has a great voice....I agree with the Chris comments....I like Chris, and I a dont like hard rock music, but he clicks with people on stage....he shows the most passion I think....Also he has the look factor that will get women to the shows....If he can settle his voice down and work on some Ballads He will be great.....As far as KAt goes, She is beautiful, and has a powerful voice but agreed will not market to the AI group that knows her too well....I dont think she can quite do Kelly Clarkson type music and Whitney Houston crowd might be out of her reach....She might be the toughest to sell to the public....I will watch and buy any videos of her especially if they are like...the dress Malfunction, or the Cherry tree song....I was well....lets just say the wife really likes those songs now too.... :rotfl2:

I think part of it was that Ruben was typically well-dressed. He had a better sense, IMHO, of what he could wear, given his size.

Those shirts with the area code on them???? I think it was just because he was a big man and not a big woman. There are so many double standards there.

I think Mandisa's age had a lot to do with it. You need a good young fan base to vote their little fingers off and I think the younger female contestants took up that fan base.

I think the double-standard is built-into the sense of what looks nice.

Having said that, I think Ruben looked okay, where Mandisa just looked poorly dressed. To be fair, I didn't watch that season that closely, and so most of what I saw of Ruben were stills from the last few weeks of the season.

Compare these two photos:

Note how Ruben's shirt is basically a solid, which doesn't accentuate his size as much as Mandisa's horizontal stripes does.

But I don't think looks matter in the entertainment industry as much as the entertainment industry itself believes. I truely and completely believe that's a myth. Looks may be a real factor for the under 20 crowd, but for those of us with the bucks....we don't really care. For us, it's talent; it's what moves us. I believe that.

Actually the demographic group that spends the most "bucks" on CD's, concert tickets, and tour merchandise is the 14-24 year olds. But you've got to remember, there is such a huge range of music and music fans that talent isnt' always the most important thing.

You need to appeal in the "looks" department to the fans of bands like Fall Out Boy. And the Veronica's probably wouldn't have ever been signed if they were beastly looking, as opposed to their perky good looks in petite bodies. (Think musical Mary Kate and Ashley)

On the other hand, having good looks can be detrimental to members of heavier bands--David Silveria from KoRN was ripped apart by the media, fans, and other bands (most notably their peers in Slipknot) when he modeled for Calvin Klein. (Although IMHO James 'Munky' Shaffer, KoRn's lead guitarist, is better looking once you get past the dred's.)

Due to the GQ type good looks of their lead singer, Trapt has been referred to as "too boy band-ish" by many, although they are a serious hard rock band. They aren't always welcome in their own genre because of the bands look, but don't fit into others musically.

The industry looks for a "package." Looks are part of that, but they don't need to be conventionally attractive. A few examples would be Staind, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Aerosmith, and Shinedown, who Chris covered this week. Personally I prefer the look of Shinedown's lead singer Brent Smith--he's not at all good looking (IMO) but there's something original about him. If you know him you'll laugh at that understatement! But Brent's look is one you'll remember, Chris is frankly just another good looking kid.

There's just a cohesive, original, marketable look that the industry wants. Having a bunch of "pretty boys" is usually defeatist, as the media will often rip them up based on their looks instead of allowing the music to stand on it's own.

I just saw an interview on my local news with Kellie Pickler. She got her hair cut. It's pretty short, but it looks good on her. I tried to find a pic online, but haven't yet. Kind of reminds me of how us women have the tendancy to do drastic things to our hair after a breakup or something bad.

I'm not crazy about her haircut. I think it looked a lot better long.
