American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I LOVE Queen - and it's one of my DS's (age 9) favorites - so we were both trying to guess what songs each of the idols would sing. Kelli was so horrible on Bohemian Rhapsoday. OMG it was SO painful to hear. She really needs to go. She's giving women a bad rap! Lose the dumb blonde act!

Bucky- I thought it was a good song choice for him. It was just ok for me.

Ace- I didn't care for this version too much.

Kellie- I hated it

Chris- I wasn't happy with his song choice but I think he did a good job with it.

Katharine- it was allright. I thought she did ok.

Elliott-Love this guys voice! Thought it was Great!

Taylor - I'm not a Taylor fan, but I thought it was good and I disagreed with Simon strongly.

Paris- Didn't like it at all. I think Paris can sing, but I've hated her song choices.

Top 3 picks:

Elliott
Chris
Taylor

I think the bottom 3 will be:

Paris (going home)
Ace
Bucky

Lots of disagreement even on this board. There really were not vocal trainwrecks last night. It is just too bad that someone can't help these kids to choose the correct songs. This has been a season of poor song choices.

If AI wants to keep their viewer audience, someone needs to help in choosing the best song to highlight the voices.

Okay, here are my reviews - love 'em or leave 'em ;)

Bucky - Not bad. Not a huge Bucky fan but I thought he did a darn good job picking a song to work with his voice and he managed to make the song his own without actually changing it. Probably his best performance so far for me, but is it good enough to buy him a ticket to Rod Stewart week? Grade B+

Ace - Dude, you got DISed by Queen! :rotfl: Big rule number one. You don't take your 15 minutes of fame self and tell one of the biggest arena bands ever known to man that you want them to REDO their song. Big rule number two? Don't pick a song that is sung 80% of the time by drunken sports fans who basically shout it while swaying back and forth at hockey games. Big rule number 3 - you get MORE forceful during the "We will, we will ROCK YOU" chorus part.. you don't back off. More than likely going to be listening to a rousing rendition of "You had a bad day" for you tonight bud. Grade C-

The Pickle - Mere words cannot express my dislike of this whole trainwreck formerly known as my second favorite Queen song. First, you looked like a cross between a Dominatrix, a Zombie and a streetwalker - then you did things on (to?) the stage that made me want to cover my DOGS eyes, then you butcher a classic rock opera song by singing it with a southern drawl. How wrong is this? I can't begin to count the ways. And you don't know what "on paper" means but you can use to word "terminology". Yeah. Right. Whatever. Grade D+ (Had you tried to sing Scaramouch you would have gotten an F)

Katharine - I agree, she's a pretty girl. She looked more like a cheerleader up on stage with Queen than a singer. I think someone from AI needs to teach her how to work the stage more. Copped out to a ballad and picked probably the second saddest song Queen has done and smiled while singing it. Wrong. Just so darn wrong. :sad2: I normally like Katharine's voice but tonight she had the worst vocals for me. First, the word is FOREVER - not FAR-EVAHH, and second, I had no idea you could sing FAR EVAHH out your nose. Grade C but she gets another shot because she normally doesn't stink like this.

Chris - First, Paula..I want to talk to you. Queen hasn't sung this song live because they couldn't do it as well as Chris? Take another slug from that Coke cup woman! :rotfl: Queen never sang it live because they stopped touring in the late 80's and Freddie Mercury DIED shortly after this album came out. Now on to you, Chris. I used to have a first class ticket on the Chris Love Train after "Wanted Dead or Alive". I just sold my ticket on eBay and I jumped track. Seriously - you can sing, but what the heck was the point of last night? Do you WANT to get kicked off? This was your chance to SHINE on a Queen classic that the general public would know and you pick probably one of the poorest written songs in their songlist? Gotta love the audience trying to find a consistant rhythm to clap along with. RIP Chris, I loved you at first but now you are nothing but a one trick pony to me dude. Grade C

Elliott - My hometown guy. 2 things, I wish he would get over his "deer caught in the headlights" stage presence and second, I wish he would stop oversinging some songs. The R&B "wavering" of his voice (what is the term for that?) is great.. for R&B songs. It had no place with Somebody to Love. Elliott has the pipes.. he can seriously belt out but he's got to learn to adapt his voice to the type of song he's singing. Grade - B

Taylor - WooHOo! Taylor is BACK! Okay, absolutely LOVE the Charlie Brown'esque" kick and miss of the mic stand. I thought for a split second that you were going to fall on your butt when you missed. :rotfl: I love how he is in this competition to entertain and how he pulls it off. Like Taylor or not, I find it hard to believe anyone would ever find him dull (unless he tries another John Denver) Taylor is the other one I had a First class ticket on the Love Train for. While I have dropped off of Chris's, I'm now sitting up front with the engineer for Taylor! Grade - A+ - the mic stand actually bought you the +

Paris - Ugh. Shoot me now. She took Queen's saddest song and tried to make it into a crowd rousing chick song. And she GIGGLED during it. I absolutely hate singers that do that little "come on! heehehhee" thing in their songs.. makes my skin crawl. Paris, you did it in the middle of a song about 2 men - one who's marriage is crumbling and is trying to find the strength to go on and the other who was DYING and was pleading with his fans not to let his music and the band die with him. Shame on you. To Paris and Katharine - don't just READ the lyrics - COMPREHEND the lyrics. :sad2: Grade - F-

Top - Taylor, Bucky, Elliott
Bottom - Kellie, Ace and PARIS.
Needs a wake up call - Chris
Should go home - Paris or Kellie
Will go home - Ace

I'm pretty surprised at the dialidol results this morning. There is no way I would have put the lineup in that order.

Sometimes I wonder if our tv's all pick up sound different...or are we clouded by our likes and dislikes of a certain performer? I like Ace's looks, so does that cloud my judgement of his singing? I know he has had some really bad weeks, but I don't think this was one of them...I didn't feel he was all that bad. Bucky..I haven't liked at all since the fisr time they showed him on Idol...and I haven't liked one thing he has done yet...but so many do :confused3 ...even my kids dislike him (but they also don't like Taylor)
I'm not a Kellie fan, but I was surprised by her last night...not as bad as I thought she would be and I was hoping she would fall flat on her face. Paris...one word...Yuck. (Sorry, but she ruined the song)

You nailed it! When he started singing I just sat there wondering "what the heck is he doing?? This is Queen!!!" :sad2:

Well Lauri, you and Matt are right on!!! I thought I was going to be sick listening to Paris last night. Even my dd, 12, couldn't believe it. All she could say was.."But, it's a sad song...why is she so happy??" Man.
And Kelly...well, the good thing is that she opened a nice dialogue with my dd last night about how revolting it is to...1. pretend to be that stupid just to look cutsie or, a little less revolting, but not much..2. actually be that stupid.

It wasn't the massacre I thought it would be but it wasn't great. In fact, our household has actually stopped voting for the past several shows. We just don't think anyone is all that great. I do not think this is the 'best Idol season ever'...don't care what the judges say. No growth as performers, mediocre talent..just not getting it done for me.

Ok, my quickie takes:

Bucky, LOVE YOU MAN :thumbsup2 Every week I like him more. It doesn't hurt that Fat Bottom Girls is one of my all time favorite songs (and even Dh's ringtone, what's that say about me?? :lmao: ) Perfect song for his voice. I don't for a second believe he'll win but he's not being given as much credit as he deserves.

Ace: :sad2: Buh bye. Maybe join a boy band?

Chris: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...oh I'm sorry, were you singing? My apologies, it just sounded like SSDD. You can win this but you gotta keep us interested. Not working for me anymore.

Katherine: Girlfriend, I owned that exact outfit in 1986. Didn't work for me then and it's not working for you now. Who Wants To Live Forever is actually in my instructions for songs I want at my funeral. I'll stick with Freddie Mercury's version. He gets the meaning.

Paris: No, honey. Just, no. The outfit, the hair, the song, all of it, just say no.

Elliott: How can a former DJ not know one of the most popular Queen songs ever?? :confused3 I thought he did ok, pretty good in fact. He's just getting that same look Chris has. You know the one where the vein in his forehead bulges out? That one.

Taylor: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: at the microphone thing. I thought Dh would wet his pants laughing. But you know what? It's Taylor, it was cute and I liked him again. And THANK YOU JESUS he didn't do the epileptic dance!

Kellie: I guess I'm watching a different show than the judges. That song was a travesty and yes, she looked like Garth. She was about as sexy too. Dh wants to know if Simon has slept with her yet because all pimps usually do before they put their ho's up for sale. Excellent analogy honey, see you do have a sense of humor!

So, IMHO Ace needs to go home, Chris needs to be in the bottom 3 just to have the fear of god put in him and Paris needs to be out next week. Bucky is my man but only has a couple weeks left in him. I'm beginning to think it'll be a Taylor and either Kelly or Katherine showdown. Taylor could do this.

I just wish they would quit with the theme weeks that involve one artist or group. They are forcing these people to sing songs they would never normally attempt to sing. They are drowning the contestants' potential as artists in their own right by not allowing them to be who they are. Tonight was BAAAAD in my opinion with the exception of my man Taylor, who even at his worse (last week) is better than most of them on there. I was so disappointed in Katherine...she was my favorite from week one, but she seems to get worse and worse every week. Where is that beautiful, clear voice? And while Elliot has a great voice if adds more syllables to whatever song he chooses next week he will only have time to sing one line! Just SING already. He looks SO unomfortable on stage to me. And he slaughtered that song. I actually have the version that is on the Ella Enchanted soundtrack (thanks to my five year old daughter I bought it and it's actually one of my favorite CDs) and Anne Hathaway sang it 10x better than Elliot. Having said all that...turning over to Nashville Star after watching AI last night was such a PLEASURE. Have any of you all heard Chris Young sing? NOW THAT'S TALENT!!!!

Well, here I go. I called my sister on the way home to remind her to watch was was surely going to be a train wreck. Boy was I surprised. While it wasn't the best performance from any of them, no one did as badly as I had imagined they all would do.

Bucky - Well what can I say? Bucky is my favorite. I never think his performance is the best of the group, but to me, it is always better than a few others. That is why I spent 1 1/2 hours voting for him last night and am heartbroken by the dialidol.com results this morning. I really enjoyed his performance last night and thought he did a great job. It could have used a bit more oomph, but he put a great southern rock (NOT COUNTRY, Paula) vibe to it. - I give him a solid B.

Ace - I expected this to suck but it really didn't. I kind of agree with Paula that it was brave to try to make it his own, but with a song like that, you just have to sing it the way the band meant it to be. I loved the first part and think if he would have stayed with that vibe instead of trying to boy-band it out, he really would have rocked. As it stands, he only gets a B-.

Kellie - OMG. Get that tramp off of my teleivision. I think her tone was fine but don't ever attempt such a classic song with that southern accent again. I thought she was trying to be Pat Benatar and I didn't like the performance. I am so ready for this kid to go home, but she has a fan base that is undeniable and she isn't going anywhere. She gets a D+ only because her tone was good.

Chris - I'm done. His voice is great but I just can't take another week of him screaming at me. It's not my genre of music. My husband thought he was great, but I think he screwed up by not doing something more well known. He gets a C+ since he does have a great voice and in his genre, he seems to be good.

Katharine - I'm bored with her. I think she is beautiful, but I haven't seen a great performance from her since early in the competition. I actually went to the kitchen during her performance. I could still hear her, but I wasn't interested. She gets a C- this week.

Taylor - He is back! I was so excited when he changed his song. I was thinking that he needed to dance again or he was going to lose his fans. I actually watched it three times on my DVR last night and it made me happy again! He gets an A+.

Paris - Whoever said Tina Turner hit the nail on the head. While her voice was wonderful, her Fantasianess came out and ruined it for me. I just don't like this kid. She gets a D-

Elliott - While watching him the first time, I wondered what the heck he was doing to that song. I had never heard song before but couldn't imagine that it was supposed to sound like that. When I rewatched it, I actually appreciated his performance a bit more. He was pretty good until the end when he again turned a one syllable word into a 23 syllable word. Stop with the R&B crap, will ya? He gets a B- because he tried to R&B a Queen song.

My top three:

Taylor
Bucky
Ace

Please go home:

Pickler
Paris

Who's probably going home:

Bucky :guilty:

I thought that was the whole point? :confused3 To get them to try new and different genres they'd normally shy away from? Unfortunately, it's not working with some contestants (*cough* Chris *cough*)

I agreed with what Simon said tonight with the exception of Taylor.

Bucky - liked it a lot! His raspy voice is what made it his own.

Ace - not a good song choice because he was trying to do it half karaoke, half-ace and it didn't really work. I think he's in big trouble.

Kellie - expectations were so low for her that she ended up doing better than everyone thought she would. I don't think there would be a good Queen song for her so she gets extra points for having the guts to do this one. She is the only one who took a huge risk tonight and imho, I don't think it hurt her at all.

Katharine - played it too safe and she will probably be in the bottom 3.

Chris - man -Simon said it all. You could've had a defining moment tonight. I think if he switched to "We are the Champions", (after Taylor left it on the table) we could've seen that performance. Having said that, he'll be in top 3 anyway.

Elliott - best of the night. I am not his biggest fan but am seeing this transformation with him. He looks better and is more confident each week.

Taylor - best song choice of the night. All he needed to do was to come back as the Taylor that everyone (well almost) loves. It never has to be perfect - it just has to be Taylor. Missing the mic stand was a classic Taylor moment for sure! It worked better that way.

Paris - I love how she can transform herself. For that, she gets thumbs up for me since I don't care for the "old soul" Paris. However, she never really "gets" the music she sings. She lacks real world experience but for a 16 year old - she is amazing. (and I am no fan - believe me)

Botton two tonight - Ace and Katharine (both have been there before)
Who goes home - Ace

Best line of the night - Ryan "someone at that table is drunk!"

I read somewhere on here that it will be Rod Stewart week next???? Please..it is going from bad to worse. Why pick these artists that no one really has a chance of doing a "showstopping" performance with??? It seems to me that the producers are just promoting their upscoming touring artists that might need a boost in ticket sales. Manilow has a new CD out...bam he's on Idol. Kenny Rogers has a new CD, bam he's on Idol. Queen..touring with the new singer to replace Freddie and Bam...they are on Idol...do you think Freddie would have agreed to appear on the show??? Now Rod Stewart..please stop..let the contestants sing the type of songs they would record IF they win....that way we can really judge what they can do.

The only singer who really helped the AI'ers was Barry Manilow. The rest were only self-promoting.

I remember that Elton John - before he pulled that stunt - also tried to really help them. I doubt we'll ever see him again on Idol.

Lauri said last night she wonders how many Tums Simon has consumed at that thought because Taylor's not the young hot pop star type. :rotfl: I have this image of Taylor being announced the winner and the cameras pan on the judges as Simon washes down a whole package of Tums with a gallon of Alka Selzer. :lmao:

Thank you! I knew her look last night reminded me of someone but I couldn't think of who.

I don't get the whole DialIdol thing either today. If that's representative, I'm so done with bothering to vote. Taylor will take it anyway, which is fine, and singers like Kellie and Paris will be around until the end. OK...

Katharine reminded me of the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz singing last night.
Kellie~ ohmigod.... give it up girl and go home. On Paper? what does that mean? she can't be that dumb???
I thought Chris should have done we will rock you, but Ace did it instead?? nah!

What's up for next week? I didn't really hear anything about what they're going to do yet.... usually, someone has an idea by now.

Ok...gotta chime in on this week's performances::

Bucky - Why is he still in the competition?? He is as karaoke as karaoke gets. He has no vocal range, is not entertaining and looks stiff, uncomfortable and out of place up there on stage. I'll give it to him for being someone that people can root for...a genuine nice guy with a hard working attitude but this is American Idol, not pick your ideal neighbor.

Ace - I'm not an Ace fan and think he should have went a few weeks ago, but I have to say that I thought he did a pretty good job with this song. He got away from that high pitched boy band crap and did much better trying to pull off a real rock song. I have no problem if he goes this week, but I thought there were worse performances out there. He took what the judges said about not trying to copy the song exactly and make it his own. Sure Brian May was not going to change the style of his song...he's a rocker not an R&B artist....kudos to Ace for sticking with the way he wanted to sing it.

Kellie - Like everyone else, I'm tired of the dumb blonde/country hick routine but never thought she'd be able to pull off Bohemian Rhapsody like she did! She's not responsible for her wicked/evil looking intro, blame the lighting director for that fiasco. She proved that she can sing and even rock out a little. I was very pleased with her surprising performance.

Chris - Ok, let's face the facts about copycat Chris....I'm a huge rock/metal/alternative fan and would not consider ever purchasing anything from this Live/Creed wannabe. The guy really can't pull off these songs and showed how weak he is with last night's song. He cannot sing, even using alt-rock standards. Agree with the statment that he could have really shined with the right Queen song, but he knows that he is really not that good and masked this inability by choosing what he did. He's got a great look but that's about it.

Katherine - Yeah, I think she is beautiful and like her personality but the statments made about not connecting with the song are 100% accurate. I'm growing tired of the Celine Dion type of performances and wish the old vixen-esque Katherine would return. I do think she has a ton of potential and could win if she mixes it up a little in the upcoming weeks.

Elliot - I just can't decide on good ol' Elliot. Some times he sounds really good and other times he totally misses the mark. In trying to put my finger on it, I guess it's because he does the same performance each week. It's that bob back and forth, positive facial expression, r&b vibrato that is getting old. Sure, he can sing but I just don't find him entertaining. Seems like he can put any song thrown at him into the same performance each week.

Taylor - Love Taylor Hicks!! Does he have a huge vocal range? No. Is he a true showman and performer that loves what he does? Yes. I loved the performace last night, it put a smile on my face. He looks comfortable up there on stage and gives it his all every week. I don't think there is a musical style they can throw at him which he would not be able to pull off. I can't wait for the tour this summer to see him live!

Paris - Train wreck. Awful. Please go home. Did she even know anything about the song that she did?? She showed her age and inexperience last night by trying to rock out a depressing, sad song. The look was not working for her and I don't think it was her best vocal either.

My bottom three:
Paris
Bucky
Chris

I'd vote off:
Bucky and Paris (hey, Trump can do it, I can too!)

Who I think will be the bottom three:
Paris, Ace and Bucky

Who I think will be gone:
Ace

First off, you guys are CRAZY! Chris was incredible. His song wasn't a "well-known" Queen song which is why nobody liked the song choice. Would we all have liked to hear him sing the melodically challenged/boring-torch-song "We Are The Champions"? SURE! This was an outstanding performance and should, quite frankly, be one of the first singles he releases. Say what you will....he's the best one in the competition, IMHO of course.

Ace: I changed my mind. YOU'RE ging home tonight, not Paris. What the Heck was that??? You got the Queen slap down for trying to change their song and went ahead and did it anyway. Dude...not cool. Aside from that, the entire song was absolutely HORRID.

Bucky: I TOLD you guys that the ONLY song Bucky could sing was "Fat Bottomed Girls"!! HAHAHAH...I win. It wasn't awful. It just wasn't good.

Kellie: Simon was spot on in his critique. This SHOULD have been the worst song ever from Pickler. It wasn't. It was decent enough (to keep her in unfortunately for us). The outfit and makeup was scary-bad. These stylists need to be fired.

Katherine: Blech. I like Katherine too. Great song choice, but poorly executed. Sharp, pitchy and weak.

Elliot: Pretty good. He's safe this week.

Paris: The stylists must have run out of ideas so they dressed her almost the same as Kellie. YUCK-ola! This wasn't a good night for her, but I don't expect this to be her type of music. Apparently Paris never read the lyrics for this song...only the chorus. Way too peppy.

Taylor: Well, the good news is that my spaz is back! The bad news is that his singing wasn't spectacular. Still one of the better performances of the evening. He needs to find a happy medium between dancing and not becoming distracting. It CAN detract from his singing.

Top 3:
Chris
Taylor
Kellie (barf...not MY top 3...just thinking based on performance)

Bottom 3:
Ace
Bucky
Katherine

Going home: ACE

None of the guest performers have been as good as the contestants, so I think that the talent must be pretty good. We are just getting immune to it.

I don't think Ace changed the song the way he wanted to. If you listen to the dialog between him and Queen, you can see that he wanted the beat changed to a military style. They wouldn't do that. Ace did not change the beat in his performance. I think he listened to what Queen suggested. The only thing he changed was the melody of one section. It was still a bad song choice but I think that the show editted the clip to make him look like even more of an idiot. I would imagine that they could have found negative comments that the band made about each contestant.
