So here are my thoughts on this evening's festivities...
CLINT: (Superstition) Now this is one of my very favorite songs, but seeing how he could pick ANYTHING I can't figure out why he chose it. There is NO funk from him. This is a song you have to STRUT to, and this sounds very theme park to me. Not bad, just not special.
JOVANY: (I'LL BE) Didn't Edwin McCain say he wouldn't give permission for anyone on Idol to sing this? Cringe...this is another not-so-special rendition. Though when he went up an octave it suited his voice so much better!
JORDAN: (LET ME LOVE YOU DOWN) The first note made me want to reach for the remote. This is just terrible...unacceptable bad. There aren't even any discernible notes in there!
TIM: (COME ON OVER ) Is it my imagination or is the sound quality from the mic not so great? This is a meh version of the song. I would've been happier to see him at a piano singing it. Something about this guy reminds me of Elliot Yamin.
BRETT: (LIGHT MY FIRE) I detest this song. It seems odd coming from such a young kid. Some funky little dance moves going on too. He does have a
unique tone to his voice, but he's no American Idol...and if he tosses his hair again...
JAMES: (GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN' ) What a good choice of song for him! I still see him fronting a band but this is a WHOLE lot of fun! James, you crack me right up. So far your the only interesting performer. Sang it child!
ROBBIE: (ARMS OF THE ANGEL ) Eeek...what a lousy choice of song. Especially following the fun of James. A Total downer, and not sung well at all. This is embarassing.
SCOTTY: (A LETTER FROM HOME) A country song? Whoda thunk it? Really, he does sing country music very very well, but it is so not my cup o' tea that I can't even be objective about it. He knows how to play a crowd though, and I have a feeling he could have a long fulfilling career as a country star like Carrie Underwood.
STEFANO: (JUST THE WAY YOU ARE ) These song choices are just so questionable. I know they want to pick something "of the moment" but these current songs are SO over-produced studio tracks that they just don't sound good live coming from Joe-average. Sweet Jesus what was the note????? Oh, poor Stefano. And why are the judges blowing sunshine up his butt?
PAUL: (MAGGIE MAY) Well, I hate this song too, but like Brett, Paul has a very unique sound to his voice. Does remind me of Rod Stewart. He seems a bit awkward on the stage though...just wandering around up there, and the song IS a copycat with him bringing nothing new or HIM. Better than many tonight but not the best (but he is adorable in' he?). And more mic problems.
JACOB: (THIS HOUSE IS NOT A HOME) Not much of a stretch with this song, but he does do it dang good! He looks like class and sounds like it too. He may be a one trick pony but it's a friggin great trick.
CASEY: (I PUT A SPELL ON YOU) This is not his best performance but he seems to be having fun with it and working the crowd within an inch of their lives. He knows how to work a song for cryin' out loud!
Overall, not a terribly impressive night but for a few performances. James and Casey were high points for me. Paul, Scotty and Jacob were delightful. As long as those guys are through to the top 12 I am good to go.
