American Idol 2023

Yes, I would prefer they focus more on the singing abilities of the contestants. Perhaps it is an effort to make the show more appealing, but I don't think people should vote for anyone just because they feel sorry about some back-story. I am sure in real life most everyone has lost a relative, had someone with a serious illness or various types of other family issues to deal with.

I like it when they get down to the top 24 since most of the obviously mediocre participants have been weeded out. Some do well initially, but don't progress as the show goes on. At least during the initial competition they have eliminated those who clearly have no talent long before they ever get in front of the TV judges. In the past, they seemed to have a few with zero singing ability perform for the judges mostly for the reaction it would get from TV viewers.

My DD11 asked me why they all have some sad story and why so many parents have died.

I don't want to spoil it so will just say they hyped up one particular girl since the beginning and I don't know why since....

If it's who I am thinking of(🔥), I thought her last performance was her best, but by no means on the same level as everyone else

And I thought it was "cruel" of the Judges to bring her to Hollywood when they had to know she didn't have the talent and they would be sending her right back home.
Yes-that whole situation was not smart on American Idol's part...but I'm sure they achieved what they set out to do with her story...just took advantage of her situation and gave her false hope in my opinion. Poor girl has to deal with enough ☹️

I haven't watched AI since the second season when Ruben Studdard won and Clay Aiken was robbed.

I did peek in a few times through the years, and it seemed like, for a while, AI was just going for whomever could sing the loudest and had the most vocal range, like that was the main criteria.

Of the few times I had peeked in, I did see Adam Lambert perform. I'm so glad I did, as we just got tickets to see Queen with Adam Lambert in Madison Square Garden this fall. I am so excited! :woohoo:

So this is the first time I'm seeing the show with the current judges. I don't recall the original judges being so mentoring. I actually like the current judges and am enjoying this season. popcorn:: Some of the contestants are really talking the notes and running with it.

I kind of see it a little differently. The stripper, the burger flipper and the Walmart cashier (as well as the rest of the contestants,) were each given three chances to perform and get notes and mentorship from the judges. They each got to do a showstopper and know what it takes to perform at that level in front of a big audience.

If none of the make it far, and the showstopper is as far as they go, they still have learned so much that they don't have to go back to stripping, flipping burgers or being a Walmart cashier. They learned they have a good voice and can may be become a local singer, or singer in a bigger city then where they came from.

It's not an either / or situation, where they win AI or they go back to their old jobs - UNLESS they give up what they've learned and how they've grown from this experience. Some band somewhere would take them, and they could eek out a decent smaller career. Not everyone is superstar material, or cut out for that kind of competitive, cutthroat career.

They made it onto AI and were seen on national TV. That's more than what the lead singers in the majority of local bands or performers have. They could locally ride on that fame for a little bit. Who knows what opportunities may come out of that. I bet it's more than being a stripper, burger flipper and Walmart cashier.

Sound of Silence.....so good!!!!

I was teary-eyed when I listened to him.

I hope he goes far, but I don't think he will win. He doesn't have the range and loud, splashy presence that AI seems to look for. But, when he goes back home to Hawaii, he can be quite proud and the islands proud of him. Like I said in my last post, he can make it far locally and become this generation's Don Ho.

My worry for her is her emotional state/stability more than anything…you can just hear it when she speaks…her background story…I do worry that this experience could potentially cause more damage for her(feeling let down/abandoned etc) I think her saving grace will definitely be needing to stay strong for her daughter and hoping she takes what the judges said to heart and finds a path to a stronger her. Wherever she may land. My biggest issue with her making it that far is that she was worlds away from the higher talent in the competition and I feel like they put people through sometimes for their stories rather than their talent-maybe hoping they will surprise them but a lot is for ratings and I feel like that can cause damage to an already fragile person if they really don’t have a shot. The other two I feel(like you said) have more opportunities to end up somewhere else possibly. Especially the burger guy-he has a voice that could definitely land him in a cover band somewhere-he’s entertaining

I hear Iz (israel kamakawiwo'ole) in him for sure and I loved that guy. He has a beautiful voice that maybe isn’t American Idol winner worthy (like you said) but he so talented. I would 100% go see him perform somewhere and thoroughly enjoy a quiet show of just him and his guitar. I think a lot of people would!

Me, too. He's not my favorite, but I could still listen to him all day!

I'm not sure who my other favorites are right now. I like the Chris Stapleton knock off because of his humble personality and voice, but don't see him making it in the top few. There just seem to be a lot of "nice" talented kids this year. Sometimes that clouds the (my) judgment.
