We always took southwest and didn't pay for bags Now we are on American airlines I know we have to pay for the checked bags but do you pay for the checked bags both ways (to Orlando and to home airport) ?

You will pay both ways. Ty to use carry-on bags if you can. Southwest is nice, isn't it?

SW is nice if you can snag a decent airfare. Lately I'm seeing high prices for the routes I need. Looking at PHX-MCO for late Sept/Oct. SW is about $515RT. Other airlines are around $450RT for our dates.

It's true I have noticed that SWA isn't as low cost as it used to be...but you do have to consider your baggage fees with other airlines too.

If 1 checked bag on Delta for example is $25 for the first one each way then that's $50 RT for just one person. American Airlines is $25 each way too.

So for your scenario if 1 person checks a bag then the ticket becomes $500 RT not $450 (at $25 each way) thus it's only a $15 difference. I'm assuming here that the $450 RT you listed excluded baggage fees as it was not noted that it did.

Just want to point out if you get the Delta American Express Card, you get a free checked bag for everyone in your party. No fee for the first year, then $95/year afterwards. I just took a party of 6 to WDW. 5 checked bags on the way down, 6 coming back... $0. Well worth the $95 fee.

Yeah we have the Delta American Express card though the checked bag is for up to 8 or 9 people (which to most would def cover their party)..actually we're going to Hawaii in September and 1 ticket is being paid for by our Delta SkyMiles. I just didn't mention it because I only brought up Delta as an example for checked baggage fees; the OP was flying AA.

Though your information is good for others to see :)

We've been finding that SWA in PHL has better fares than American, though both are higher than we'd like. USAirways had better fares on many occasions when we planned traveled with them than American has been offering or we just haven't been lucky in nabbing one. We're using SWA for two trips this summer -to WDW and to a birthday celebration in Las Vegas in September. And of course the lack of luggage fees is a wonderful perk.

Citibank American card has a similar deal with a free checked bag, priority boarding. I got it for the mileage bonus when my miles were about to expire, but plan to cancel before the annual fee kicks in as I don't fly much on American; I use my Chase Sapphire and Freedom cards to rack up the SW points.
