Amber alert- Missing 5 year old in Florida

Our news reported the father had just returned home from work.

Sorry, I must have missed that part. I thought that the parents had just "happened" to wake up at 3AM and notice that the child was not in her bed. I guess after the whole Casey Anthony nightmare, my thoughts just automatically went to a horrible place. :(

oh I hope they find this sweet baby! We are praying for her!

Not to be rude, but my first thought was where is the mother? She was with the dad and his gfriend? Here is hoping the mother took her and she is possibly safe right now.

I routinely wake up at least 3-4 times a night and always check on my DD6 when I wake up. I have been doing that since she was born and will continue until she is out of the house. I just can't sleep through an entire night without waking up. I can go maybe 2-3 hours, then my body wakes up. I don't think it is that uncommon.

With that said, the girlfriend could have been sleeping and waiting for the dad to come home from work and set her alarm for 2:55- she got up to greet him and went in and checked on the little girl and found her gone. The little girl could have been missing since the girlfriend actually went to bed...who knows.

I will be praying that they find her soon...and safe.

I agree. I have always done this too. Anytime I get up (which is usually at least once) at night, I always check on my kiddos, before I can go back to sleep.

Also, IF it had been the case of sleeping adults randomly waking up...it could easily not be random at all, but their sleeping selves reacting to a change in the house. Hubby gets out of bed sometimes and goes to the living room, and I generally wake up 3 minutes or so after he does that...the waking, getting up, opening and closing the door don't get to me as he does them, but then there's a change in the room that causes me to wake and go looking. I would think if someone came into our house, even very very quietly, and took someone from our place, I'd notice the change soon after.

Especially if they tried to take DS, b/c we have a family bed and he sleeps right next to me...that person would be getting a big surprise in the form of raging me and thundering hubby.

I hope the little girl is OK...

Wonder how old Dad is -- the "girlfriend" is 17. Peculiar that she refers to her as "my daughter" -- wonder how her actual mother feels about that.

My bad feeling is that Dad and girlfriend (or one or the other) did it. I totally understand the urge to murder anybody who touches your children. I do think it's a peculiar/suspicious thing to announce in a 911 call. Generally speaking, people are panicking and pleading for help FINDING their child, not thumping their chests about retribution, because they're still hoping the kid is sleepwalking or something.

And, sadly, it's still a thousand times more likely for somebody in the child's life to kill them and make up a stranger abduction than for a stranger to come into a home and take a child out of her bed.

I had heard that the dad is 25. Kind of strange.

Why would an intruder prop open a door with a rock or a brick?
I also read that the girl was in the same bed with the 17 year old girlfriend. Something just sounds really wrong with this whole story.

That's what the news is reporting, but read the 911 transcript. He clearly says he just woke up. He also says that when he went to bed, the door was not opened, there was no brick. He did not just come home from work.

It appears it was originally the girlfriend talking saying she just woke up....THEN the dad grabbed the phone and spoke his threat.......

The dad is on Nancy Grace now.

The girl, her little brother and the 17 year-old girlfriend were all sleeping in the same bed. Girlfriend woke up & noticed Haleigh missing, about the same time dad arrives home from the night shift.

Both dad & girlfriend have voluntarily taken polygraphs (sp?)

The father tells Nancy Grace that he took a polygraph test and passed with flying colors and that his girlfriend passed one as well.

I wonder why the girlfriend and the 2 kids were in the same bed?
If someone was looking to abduct someone, I wonder why the 17 yr old wasn't the choice?

This is gonna be a strange case.

Now this little girl:sad2: and a couple of weeks ago it was that cute little boy:sad2:
I have a feeling both of these are going to end badly. I hope I'm wrong.

Leonard Pidilla is at it again. He came back to Florida to help in this search. He's put up a $25k reward for her return. I don't get this guy. I can't figure out if he really cares or if he is just into being in the limelight.

The case scares me. I really don't think we will see a happy ending. The family doesn't appear to have money, so she couldn't have been taken to get a ransom. The parents, while separated, appear to have gotten along and shared custody. That leaves a sick person as the most likely suspect. If so, her chances are not good. So sad.

Strange case - maybe...

But I dont think it's that odd that the 2 kids and the girlfriend were in the same bed..... When DBF is out of town, my girls sleep in bed with me sometimes.... Not out of the norm for alot of families..

And...obviously the person was looking for a child... or knew 17yr old would be too much a fight...

I get what you're saying...our older dd used to sleep in our bed when dh traveled on business. But....think about it, if someone grabbed your child, wouldn't the kid at least gasp, kick, do something? That would wake me in a heartbeat, and I'm not a particularly light sleeper. I can't figure it out, but this case just seems fishy to me.

I thought they said on N.G. that she was sleeping with a sitter? Maybe I misunderstood.

I don't think it's odd the children were sleeping with the step mother.
my grandchildren are staying the night and my husband is out of town so i had them sleep in bed with me. That way i am not having to get up all night and check on them.

Prayers for this poor little girl.

May whoever took her just drop her off alive at a safe place.

I meant in my earlier post not that it would be odd for them to be sleeping in the same bed, but it was odd that they are in the same bed and for the GF not to wake up if an intruder came in the room and took the girl from the bed.

The Today show described the neighborhood as a "dumping ground" fox sex offenders!! Awful.\
I dont know what to think with this one.

Nancy Grace did refer at the beginning of her show to the "babysitter" but as the show went on and she interviewed the father, it became clear there wasn't a babysitter-it was the 17 year old girlfriend who was there (not a stepmother either, like another poster mentioned.)
