After last minute research, we have decided to get DS a Kindle Fire. Should we get Amazon prime? We do not shop much on the internet, but it said you can get movies and tv shows if a prime member. I thought about the free trial but he won't get it until Christmas. Any suggestions?

The one month trial of Prime does not start until you activate the Fire.

I have one on order and will try the prime out before committing to purchase for a year. Heck that is what the trial period is all about.

Good luck with your decision!

You could contact Amazon Customer Service and see if there's any way to delay the free trial start until Christmas...

Do you normally order from Amazon? Because Prime includes free two-day shipping as well as the movies and shows, and probably more as well. Of course, since it'd be your son's account, orders would have to be on his account. There may be other benefits to Prime as well. And it's less than twenty two cents a day.

I LOVE Amazon Prime!! The streaming is a lot like Netflix except you don't get them in the mail- all streaming.

You should look into shopping on Amazon. I started comparing prices and you can get most everything cheaper through Amazon. Plus, I love reading the reviews before spending my money on something. Free 2 day shipping has been a lifesaver for me and has saved me a ton of money. I think you really get your money's worth if you use the free 2 day shipping. Otherwise, if you price it out per month, I think it is still a little cheaper than Netflix for streaming. One thing about the streming though, it is not all appropriate for a child, they have a lot of stuff on there that I wouldn't want my son watching (as does Netflix)- just something to keep in mind if you are going to give him access to the streaming.

I have amazon prime, and love it just because I get free 2 day shipping, and everything seems to be cheaper on amazon, anyway. I also love streaming movies, and I can check out books for my Kindle, too, which is a new feature they added recently.

Prime is great, it is so nice to have free 2 day shipping without having to look for a filler to get to $25 for free super saver shipping. For an item like a textbook where you need it delivered as soon as possible it really has been valueable to my family (the school bookstore wanted $130 for 1 used book, $170 for it new, Amazon had it for $128 new)

As others said the streaming is nice too, we can watch free movies and tv shows anywhere at home on our tablet

If you are involved w/a college or a student, Amazon Prime is free. I just had to email them using my school account and have Amazon Prime free - I think for a year?

I love the 2 day shipping but have not tried any of the streaming.

You can join the Amazon mom's club for free and you get a version of Amazon prime for free. You can't stream movies or any of that but you do get the 2 day free shipping for 3 months with the free Amazon mom's membership. It's easy to sign up for, and starts immediately, even if your first order isn't one of the things considered to be a "Amazon Mom's" type of purchase. That way you could have the item you're wanting shipping for the free 2 day shipping (sometimes 3 day this time of year.) Once you activate your fire you can decide if you want to upgrade to regular prime for the movie streaming.

Here's the link to the Mom's club

I believe Prime members also have access to a lending library of books for the Kindle.

Now as PP mentioned on the streaming not everything is appropriate for a child but I know you can set a pin for purchases and you might be able to set a pin the prime free stuff as well.

I just registered and loaded a book and couple of Apps on both my dd's Fires'. I didn't realized Prime trial started. So I'm going to test it out when the kids get back to school Monday or Tues. Or I'll email to see if trial could start on Christmas.

I loved prime, but with no 2 day shipping and low internet usage caps where I live, it isn't worth it. It's great for the continental US though.

I love Prime, but then again we shop for MOST things online since we are a non-driving family. The 2 day shipping is a lifesaver, but if you don't buy much online I would say it's not worth it for the free content. Their video selection is not great and yes the lending library is cool, but is it $80 a year cool? Probably not.

I love the 2 day shipping but have not tried any of the streaming.

I thought you had to be a paid member to do free streaming? Has that changed recently? :confused3

I think that's still true. I got an offer to renew as a student at half price. I did, but then found out there was no 2 day shipping to AK, and our Internet is pathetic (sure, you could stream, but then you'd go over your usage amount and have to pay overage fees to the cable company). One nice thing about Amazon is they'll give you your money back if you haven't used the prime features.

Yes, that is still correct. I have the Amazon Prime student membership (free for one year), but I am unable to get the streaming TV shows and movies with my free account. My one-year free membership is up next week, and I am planning on getting the paid membership then.

Thanks for the information. I purchased the kindle today and will try out the mom's club (at Christmas) and see if it is worth it.

I Love my Amazon Prime but do find that I spend quite a bit more money on impulse buys since they ship free and are also tax free. Highly recommend it though!

I  Amazon Prime with the free shipping and after all the stuff I bought yesterday I'm going to love it more....1 tablet, 2 laptops as well as books which would have been over $150 in shipping!
