Amazon Fights Back: New Wi-Fi Kindle for $139 on Aug 27

There are plenty of FAs out there who tell you that airplane mode is actually NOT acceptable, and that phones etc must be completely off.

In all the time I've had my cell phone (10+ years), I've never turned it off when flying. I always put it in airplane mode.

None of the planes have crashed yet.

And until FA physically take it away from every single person on the plane to check what mode people have their phones in, I'll keep it that way. :goodvibes

I like to follow the rules that the Flight Attendants on my flights give. I just don't like federal prison enough to play games with it.

disneyfans95, pirate has had her experiences with it (which match DH's, and in total honesty he IS a tester for Kindle but some of his coworkers like the Nook so it's not a prereq for being a tester that you can't appreciate other things), and you've had yours. Why bother with saying she's wrong? Why on earth would she lie?????

There's room for all sorts of e-readers out there...the Nook can be wildly successful at the same time that the Kindle is.

Totally agree. yet you got this Piratechick out there with a stopwatch and a witch hunt if you say one thing against the Kindle.. I honestly find it funny and enjoy showing her posts to my family.. She is a pitbull when it comes to saying anything against her beloved e-reader.. lol

I wasn't responding to remarks you made about the Kindle, I was responding to your wholly exaggerated claims about the Nook.

I'm glad your mom and dad enjoy my posts.

Just as we stated earlier in the thread. Competition is good for business and it's good for the consumer. Not every e-book reader wants or needs the same thing from a device. Variety is key!

dream on.
the K2i has been out of stock on the Amazon website for several days now. Last time Amazon (going from the original Kindle to the 2nd generation) Amazon manipulated the availability to cut down on the returns of original Kindles during the 30 day return period in order to get a newer Kindle 2. Right now there will be very few people receiving new K2i before August 27th because if they were smart what they'd do is use them for 25 days or whatever, return it, and then get a new Kindle 3.

I'd expect that whatever stock they have left over will be used for Warranty replacements and sold has refurbs on thru the Amazon Warehouse. I also would expect to see some more Woot offers if they have a bunch leftover.

RitaE Thank you so much for posting this info. I had purchased a Kindle2 on July 16th and when I saw the new generations were coming out I was not a happy camper and assumed I was stuck with a week old out of date Kindle!
After reading your post I went on-line to my account at Amazon.com and got the info I needed to return my Kindle. I did that today and have already ordered the new and improved version. Can't wait to get it - in the short time I had my Kindle I loved it!

I jumped on the Audible deal and just got my Kindle a week ago. I love it!!!!!! Usually I travel with stacks of books but its so nice to have them all on one. Its driving Dd nuts, she wants to read on it and so far I am not sharing. I need to have 1 thing in this world that is mine!

I'd like to get these for Christmas presents, but I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the difference between the two. I mean I know it's 3G, but what does that mean? Does it mean you don't need a hotspot, but yet, you still have to be on land (versus being on a cruise, where I assume you'd have to pay ships rates)?
Also, one of my 'kids' is in Ireland. Amazon says I have to order from a certain page..why, would this one be different? Any point in getting the 3G one for that person, or is that only good in the US?
I'd really like to get the $139 one and give them the difference in gift certs from Amazon. I'm also considering the nook (because that is the one that will let you d/l from the library)..but not sure if that would work in Ireland (he has a membership at a library in the US).
Can someone set me on the right path with this wifi vs 3g stuff? Thanks.

If you go to the Kindle Boards someone can answer your questions. I just got mine a couple of weeks ago, but I've been reading on the boards and I'm pretty sure there's a different one for international use. I'm really not clear on the 3G thing either because I live in an area that doesn't have 3G so I'm not sure how that works.

With my 3g kindle I can download books while sitting in my house, riding the train, etc. It does not have to be a wifi location. If you can get a signal its good to go, my kindle works better in my house than my nextel. We are out in the sticks, dial up internet if you can imagine so the 3g was important to me.

For it to download books outside the U.S. I am pretty sure you need the international 3g kindle. http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/board,1.0.html This forum would be able to tell you what to buy for children abroad.

anyone think the Nook will drop their prices again? my DS turns 13 8/12 and that's the only thing he wants

Barnes and Noble submitted paperwork to the FCC for a new generation nook in mid-July.

There were two code names, sorry I can't remember them but the speculation is that one is going to be a larger screen .. like the Kindle DX and one is going to somehow take work in conjunction with the new NookStudy (textbooks) desktop application they just released. Another possibility is that they will have an eInk Pearl screen device like the newer Kindle. It also appears to have an international 3G chipset.

If that happens it is possible that they will price drop again to clear out old stock. I'm not sure though because as soon as Barnes and Noble does Amazon will beat them by $10 again and Barnes simply does not have the financial resources of Amazon to play the price war game. Sony is rumored to have some new models to be released soon also.

Regardless most people think that the WiFi only models of all the brands will be down to $99 by next summer if not sooner. Just lots of rumors swirling around at the moment though.

Still waiting for the Gen 2 covers to go on sale. :rotfl:

From where I stand, it feels like it's the opposite, since she knows there are other experiences but you seem to have absolutely refused to hear that.

Nothing wrong with having a stopwatch! I'm sure the testers have 'em. Mr Bezos made promises, and the intent is to do everything they can to live up to those promises.

3G is the cellphone network vs internet (wifi) You won't be charged extra; it's all covered by amazon. But you might not be able to *connect* if you're out on a cruise. I'll ask DH to tell me what to tell you for that question.

When you are in, or living in, another country, you will be charged more, thanks to the tax authorities of that country. Trust me, amazon doesn't want that, but they have to abide by it. I believe the $139 one works in other countries, but I'll make sure with DH.

I'll be back once DH is back at his desk. :goodvibes

DMRick - the 3G version of the newest Kindle is the only one that is listed as having "global" access on the Amazon website. I checked the coverage map for Ireland and almost the entire country has at least some coverage.

There will be additional charges for downloading books in Ireland - that is done by country and it's just the way it is.

For your US gifts, the wifi would work fine as long as they have wireless at their homes or can easily find a wifi hotspot.

The convenience of the 3G is of course that you can download anywhere (assuming you can get the signal) and that means you can download in a hotel room, at a restaurant, at the beach, etc.

I don't know about your cruise question but you can easily load a Kindle with all the books you could possibly read during a cruise before you leave home - no need to purchase just to have the option of downloading on the high seas. For that matter, you can always buy something, have it sent to your computer, and manually download it with the included cable Amazon provides.

Happy shopping!

DMRick...from my hubby...

"Having the 3G Kindle means that you have wireless connectivity in 100 countries".

"On a cruise, there may not be 3G connectivity..."

He does say that it would likely be best to do the actual downloading while in port, when you know there are cell networks.

And really, if you load up your Kindle before the cruise, download a ton of books, you don't even have to turn it (the connection) on at all during the cruise. Keeping the connection off when not actually downloading books is what keeps the battery life very very long.

re: Ireland, ever since the initial International version, the ones released since are good internationally. The 3G should work just fine for that child (by the way, can I go visit? LOL, ha ha).

Does any know if the new Kindles web browser is better or faster ?

I had both the K1 and K2, and yes, I realize that they are for primarily for reading. But its nice to be able to check sports scores, email, and other stuff while you are reading. That old browser was worthless. pirate:

Same here. I love the Nook for being able to just grab the Yankee score or such..

The first reviews (which can change once they get the firmware well firmer!) is that the browser on the Kindle is still very poor and screams of beta testing. Maybe they will get it going.
