Amazon Fights Back: New Wi-Fi Kindle for $139 on Aug 27

If I use overdrive at my public library can I read those books on Kindle?

I do, but I have to re-format the epub or the mobi file myself to put it on my Kindle. It would be nice to see Amazon facilitate that process at some point.

So did you guys buy the $34 cover amazon sells for it? I'm going to buy a Kindle but am wondering about the cover. It seems you would need a cover to protect it in your purse.

I'll definitely buy a cover but I'll wait until I see what the M Edge people offer. I have M Edge leather covers for all of my Kindles and my iPad, so I like their product and would like to be consistent! I don't use a light that's specifically for the Kindle - I just use a lamp. If I need to read at night and it's not practical to use a lamp, I read on my iPad (but I can't do it for very long because it starts to make my vision fuzzy.)

Love my Kindles!!!

I bought the cover with the light to try out. It seems kind of cool that it pulls its power from the Kindle instead of separate batteries and I want to see how that works. If I don't like it I'll return it.

I carry my big Kindle DX around with me everywhere, I like the big screen.....

I love it love it love it.

I have nothing to say except that I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves her Kindle.

And I just have the one Kindle 2. I have the fuscia M Edge cover and the light that Amazon has in white. I'm not keen on that light so if anyone has suggestions, I'm open for them.

I just bought the K2 last week, so I could return it, but I already bought an Oberon cover and DecalGirl skin that I LOVE (and they wouldn't fit the new one :sad1:) so I guess I'll just keep what I've got. I love it so far!

Help a newbie, or should I say wannabe?

I would love to get a Kindle. Was actually on Amazon this morning looking.

What is the difference between the wi-fi & the 3g? Once I've downloaded a book, isn't the material saved to the unit? Is the access just so you can search & purchase wirelessly? If there's no wi-fi can it be connected to a pc?

Most significant differences between Kindle & Nook?

Most significant differences between Kindle & Nook?

The significance depends on what you think is important:

Nook:
Compatible with epub (borrow library books)
Replaceable battery
external memory slot expansion (micro sd card)
touchscreen colored LCD

Kindle:
works internationally (buying books)
supposedly faster page turn (based on the reviews)
longer battery life
keypad

Other than that I think they are pretty much has similar capabilities

If you haven't even held the devices in your hands I suggest you do so first before purchasing.
I thought I would be happy with any ereader and then I started doing my homework and realized I like Nook the best.
It lets me borrow library books, visually it's sleeker than kindle or Sony, and it feels better in my hands than Sony.
Again, those are my personal opinion. You might feel a lot different after holding each device in your hand.
I don't know where there are any working model of Sony or Kindle. Best Buy has Nook (hopefully working model) and Sony (demo only). And Target has Kindle (my store only has demo version, non working).
But each B&N store will have a working model.

Unfortunately I didn't get to look at other ereaders closely before I decided on Nook (kobo, etc.).
But I'm more than happy with what I have right now.

Good luck with your decision! Either one you get I'm sure you will be happy with it :)

The 3G operates like a cell phone. You can get a connection to download or browse almost anywhere in the world. The wifi works in hotspots, or your home if you have a wireless network. Both connect to a computer to download documents.

There are significant improvements to the newest Kindle (available Aug 27) which change the comparison to the Nook.

Kindle
sharpest screen in town
holds 3500 books
battery life of a month (without wireless turned on, 2 weeks with wireless turned on)
Even faster page turning (it was already faster than the Nook)
Lightest e-reader at 8 point something ounces
can navigate, enlarge, decrease PDF's
text to voice enabled books
has a new web browser
each kindle has its own unique email address where you can mail yourself documents
3G wireless works all over the world

Nook
has a screen sharpness equal to the last Kindle
holds 1500 books
battery life 10 days (without wireless on, half that with wireless on)
replaceable battery
lag time associated with turning on the device and page turning
color screen is for navigating through menus only, not for reading and visibly refreshes itself repeatedly until it 'sleeps'
can read library books on it (only epub - and like regular books, you have to wait until one is available)

Downloading books to your device (either one) is simple and even if you lose the device, the books you purchase will always be available on your account, at B&N or Amazon so if you buy another, your stuff purchased is all there.

My suggestion is this: Go to both B&N and Amazon and do searches for e-books on the titles and kinds of books you buy. See which one has the better selection. Both carry bestsellers, etc. I love travel books and I found Amazon had more books of the type I was likely to purchase.

I have the kindle app on my ipod touch and I love it but I told DH that I want the new kindle for my birthday. My ipod touch is great but I read a lot and so I want something easier on my eyes.

:thanks::disrocks:

Thanks so much for the replies!

I absolutely agree about getting things in your hand. Did that with my DSLR & BB (thought I wanted the cometitor until I actually held it :goodvibes).

I'm guessing since I can use my BB as my wi-fi hotspot then I don't necessarily need the 3G version of an ereader?

If you travel a lot (especially outside the US) and you are an avid book buyer (must have books when it's released kinda person) then Kindle 3G is the one for you.

If you don't travel or just travel for fun and don't mind loading up your books before you leave then either wifi only ereaders would work.

If you would like to do library books then Kindle most probably will be out of the running (they really make it hard for you to borrow library books).

Although I heard that Kindle 3G could be used for browsing outside of the country as well. I don't have one, so I can't say for sure. But I've been reading some posts that say so. If you would like to have that option then Kindle might just be what you need.

Another thing to consider, Nook is an android based device. Which means it has lots of potential for improvements. Now whether B&N would continue to strive for those improvements or not I can't say. But if they want to, they could keep issuing firmware updates to "improve" their device.
Then again, B&N is in the market to make $. They also could release future Nooks with the better firmware updates and not do any improvements to the current one.

Sorry to confuse you some more.

ps: I have the wifi only (only for about a month now) and never had any issues where I would need to have 3G for anything. We of course have wifi at home. The $50 savings is quite hefty for me :)

Added to cart for my dd for christmas/birthday

She will love it and it fits my budget

I've never preordered a popular item like a Kindle before. I ordered one for my DW in the first 12 hours or so that it was anounced. Should I expect it to actually be available on or near the release date?

Yeah, I was so excited to see this yesterday since I pretty much decided to get a Kindle but I so wanted a graphite but refused to pay twice as much, now I'm happy! :cool1:

But, does anyone know for sure if I can change formats of the books to work on the kindle? I have heard you can change PDF (I think this is not supported by Kindle, DH has been doing the technical research). If I know I can do this I am preordering right away! If not I have to wait and see since the school I'm going to be using has their books in PDF.

Still not better then a Nook though.

You have the same issues with no e-library access, no lending, no touch screen etc etc

Same old, same old.. I am happy at the price war though. That helps everyone that wants e-books..

But the Nook is still a much better deal

Yeah, it's gotten really old.

Yeah, it's gotten really old.

Nope, the old part is you hunting down any of my posts. If you don't like my opinion, then let it go.

But posting the smart $^#% posts right after mine is childish and I wonder why you don't have anything better to do...

Take a break Jrmasm. Trust me, you need it.
