Amazon Expired Food Investigation

CNBC has an article claiming Amazon is not stopping merchants from selling expired food even after multiple complaints by consumers (and by CNBC when they got expired food in their own experiment). Always check your dates folks! I do it whether I buy online or in the store. Personally I tried buying my granola bars on Amazon a couple years ago to save money and each time they came and were barely within the expiration date so I stopped and haven’t tried again. If you get something expired chat Amazon for a refund. If they won’t give it to you file a complaint with your cc or bank that you used when you bought the item. (Obviously if you get expired food from other online merchants you should demand a refund as well!)

Have people here found expired/borderline expiration to be a problem when ordering groceries from merchants like Amazon?

I was buying pizza flour (12 small bags per order) on Amazon; I ordered twice and each time it was delivered it was within 2 months of the expiry date. I got a refund both times, but have stopped ordering it from Amazon and just buy pre-made dough at the grocery store now.

Yes- I have experienced this with both Amazon & our local grocery pickup / grocery delivery services. Locally I’ve received items (presliced / prepackaged fruit, bagged salad, multipacks of snacks, meat, milk) that were expired already or expiring day of pickup/delivery ... canned goods are often damaged.

With amazon I bought several items in bulk like breakfast bars, oatmeal, etc but this past year noticed that when I went to use them items were expired, by a lot, not ‘just expired’ so they had to have been near expiration when delivered, I just didn’t notice it. Similarly (but different...) I’ve become frustrated that I buy things with guaranteed delivery that didn’t arrive as promised - then I had to go buy the item at the grocery store. I like the idea of these services saving me time but lately they aren’t a time saver because I am ending up rushing to the grocery anyhow...
Generally I have found that it’s difficult to find items that aren’t near expiration readily available ~ even things with long shelf life (ex: canned Tuna seem to be closer to expiring than in the past when I’m at the grocery). I’ve always bought in bulk with sales cycles but can’t do that anymore.

There have been many stories done on how meaningless those expiration dates are.
I do look, but we waste sooo much food because of those arbitrary expiration dates.
I say that as someone who volunteers at the local Food Bank where past due date foods, including dairy products are a mainstay.
Someone even donated cases of World War II canned peanut butter. Yup, still safe, healthy and tasted good after 70+ years.

This is why I am hesitant about doing grocery pre order and just picking them up. I've seen the expired items at Walmart and Target. With that being said I have done the grocery pickup but it was for paper items, cleaners and the like.

I always buy from amazon or the manufacturer if i can, all the prime now and fresh is from amazon directly..
I ordered k cups and it came with the sams club sticker on the front with the price being 11.00 cheaper than i paid now i order from amazon with the manufacturer being the seller
I just recently started ordering from instacart so i could get aldi and two local storez so i could save money. Amazon was so expensive
