Amazon Echo

WeMo and Philips Hue products now work with Amazon Echo.

You can now use Echo to switch on the lamp before getting out of bed, turn on the fan or heater while reading in your favorite chair, or dim the lights from the couch to watch a movie—all without lifting a finger...or even raising your voice.

To get started, connect your WeMo and Hue devices to your home Wi-Fi and name them in their respective app. Then say, "Alexa, discover my appliances." After Echo's confirmation, you can control your devices by voice.

Things to try:

"Alexa, turn on the hallway light"
"Alexa, turn on the coffee maker"
"Alexa, dim the living room lights to 20%"
"Alexa, turn on the electric blanket"
"Alexa, turn on the outdoor decorations"

Supported products:

WeMo: Switch, Insight Switch, and Light Switch
Hue: A19, Lux, BR30, Bloom, and LightStrip lights

As always, the Amazon Echo team looks forward to your feedback via the Amazon Echo App and on social media (#AmazonEcho).

To each their own. We love ours and couldn't be happier. Why not try selling yours? Craigslist?
My boyfriend bought it, not me, so it's up to him what he wants to do with it. He rarely uses it either, but it didn't cost enough that he's worried about recouping any money.

Your post made it seem like you were very unhappy with it. Kind of senseless to keep something that you dislike so much. I agree that the units are not expensive though.

I'm surprised to see the Echo getting such high praise here. I find the dumb thing to be pretty useless. It doesn't understand what I'm saying a lot of the time and even when it does, half the time it doesn't know the answer anyway. One time I got frustrated and said, "Alexa, why don't you vacuum or do something productive?" That sassy broad replied, "I added vacuum and do something productive to your To Do List." :headache:

Lol. I don't have intense, passionate feelings of hatred towards it. For me, it's more like a toy that got played with for a couple days, didn't work as well as you'd hoped, then was left to collect dust.

The Echo came with a 6 month return period. You can return it.

ETA: Missed the follow-up post. Never mind.

I'm excited about this and I bet I can order all those compatible products on Amazon. ;)

Finally got my Echo yesterday. I love it! I am super impressed with it. A few problems with setup but it was maybe 10 minutes to get it to connect. The voice recognition is so good that I'm shocked. And the $99 price tag is unbelievable to me. Now I want one for the kitchen and the bedroom.

The dogs are very confused about who Alexa is and where she's hiding.

I just wish that They would blend the Sonos system with Echo. That would be perfect. I love the Sonos and the ability to pair two speakers for stereo. And the Sonos has superior sound.

Isn't it just wonderful? I'm not surprised you're in love with it! It is fun + functionality at its best!

My parents ordered me this (on April 9th) for my birthday. It is due to arrive end of June. I had no idea what the Echo was until they showed me online. It looks pretty neat. I am not sure if I would have bought it myself but for a gift it will be nice. What do I plan on doing with it? Well I think I may end up stooping to a new level of lazy. If my iPhone or iPad isn't next to me instead of getting up off the couch to grab one to look up something quick like "what's the chance of rain tomorrow" I could just ask Echo. I also think i will use it for streaming music. Maybe the list creator. Not sure how that will integrate with Apple, so I'm not sure if I'll use that feature. I also think I'll use it for cooking when I need to figure out a measurement conversion or a substitution. I figure as soon as I get it, I'll make it a point to start using it so it will become routing.

I love that it takes advantage of Amazon Prime Music. When I say "Alexa, play some Roger Miller" and it comes back with "King of the Road," I'm just joyous. And when DH and I were wondering who wrote the book The Martian so I asked Alexa. Yep, she got it. Wondering what the weather is going to be? She's good for that. When I asked her how old John Denver was when he died, she gave me the location, year and his exact age (including months and days).

There are a few things I've asked her that she doesn't understand, but not much. I asked her earlier who starred in the TV show Crossing Jordan (it was on NetFlix and the first thing I thought of) and she listed actor after actor (all correct).

And like Siri, she has a sense of humor. Try "Alexa, Tea. Earl Grey, Hot." :)

I am jealous! My estimated delivery window is May 27-July something. It has been forever since i ordered it. Oh well, someday it will come. Can't wait to play with it

It does so many things, I really think you're going to love it! :thumbsup2

Does anyone know if Alexa can control the Amazon Fire Stick through voice commands? Thought I saw that somewhere but now I can't find anything on it.

I have had mine for about a month now and I love it and already requested a second one for Christmas. The streaming music is my favorite feature

Great question! I thought I read something like that as well.
