AMAZING RACE 5 - Official Thread

I think it will be a little harder for Brandon and Nicki to start this leg with no money. The twins had a car to drive but in India they have been using taxis to travel, not a good way to start. Not to mention the time factor.

I was stunned that they basically gave up on the race to avoid the head shaving. Especially this close to the end, and after all they've gone through to get this far. I don't think that the show has ever had back to back non-elimination rounds before, so B/N had every reason to believe that the decision ended the race for them.

OTOH - DW said she would have done exactly the same thing. After 25 years I thought I knew her! We'd be terrible on AR, I already knew that. This just confirms it.

On the other hand, Brandon has no excuse, but since she wouldn't do it, it doesn't matter.
Brandon made the comment that his hair would grow back so he would have done it IF Nicki felt comfortable doing it.

::yes:: I thought the same thing and India is a very poor country. Whenever Amazing Race has made India a leg of the race everyone has commented on how poor the people are and the SMELL of the city! Probably because cows are sacred and they roam wherever they want which was evident last night.

I loved it when Kim is telling us that Chip put his big ole butt in the taxi and made his woman push! GO Chip and Kim!

Actually, Nicole O'Brian is a FORMER Miss Texas, and bills herself now as a "Christian Model". Although after her comment about the high number of Mosques (in a predominantly Mulsim country, mind you), it is obvious she has little tolerance for other views and religions. She refused to have her hair cut out of vanity, pure and simple. I'm sorry they were not eliminated last night.
 She commented on how there was a mosque on every corner in Dubai. I didn't think that showed any intolerance at all.

Far to uptight to not cut your hair hell mine and my DW's would have been gone in a second.

My favorite part was when the twins were asking for money in Dubai and they gave that one guy a hug. He looked at the camera and said "twins" with a sly smile. Oh I thought that was so funny!!!

I am really aggravated that Brandon and Nicole weren't eliminated. They got off so easily for not doing the FF. Normally I wouldn't shave my head either, but for a 1 in 5 chance at $1 million, I'd wear a hat!! But, like someone said, it will be very difficult for them to get money in India. Oh, and I felt her comment on the Mosques was merely an observation.

I thought the same exact thing.

We found that part hilarious as well. It happened so quickly that I figured most people missed it, but I laughed out loud. I also thought Nicole's comment about the Mosques was more of an observation and not derogatory.

I knew as soon as they decided to do the FF that Nicole would NEVER shave her head. I figured Brandon might, but I also thought he'd try a little harder to get her to do it.
What is Colin's deal?! Christie tells him to pack the clay in more when he's making the first brick and he yells at her "I'm packing it!" all mad. Give me a break, it's called making a suggestion since she could see the people that worked there doing it and he couldn't. But, when she kept telling him, Chip has one, Chip has two, Bowling mom's have one done, that would have bugged the heck out of me too!
The non-elimination legs are pre-determined, but I wish they'd do at least one in the beginning of the race. They didn't do one until half the teams had already been eliminated. After next week's episode, we'll have seen the same 5 teams 3 weeks in a row!

I saw one on the very first show and nobody used it, but a Yield is suppose to be on every show. It got a little wierd how everyone made a comment, "like we will not Yield"

I think they have to state that for the camera - so it's explicit that they are not using the yield or something.

I can understand why Nicole and Brandon didn't shave their heads...they are models, their work is their looks...they would be out of work for a long time. Nicole's hair would take FOREVER to grow back to where it is today. I can totally see where they are coming from.

but i honestly wish they were eliminated last night...the both of them just grate on my nerves

could you imagine the looks on the other players faces when they arrived at the pit stop and found

2 bald twins?

:rotfl:

Stinkerbelle, we think alike I just stated the same thing on another post. I think it would have been an unwise move for them to shave their heads for occupation reasons. However I think Brandon would look much better without the mop on top of his head!

Are the elimination rounds predetermined? or is this something that can be decided at the time?

I would think that doing anything other than predetermining them would constitute cheating and the FCC would have some say in that. I can see it now "oh we don't want to lose that nice couple so soon, so let's make this a non-elimination round"

Colin and Christie – I loved the editing this week. First Colin said something like “I think we can trust Chip & Kim more than the other teams” and then immediately after that there was footage of Kim saying more or less “Chip & I want Colin & Christie to self-destruct”. Okay, I’m mean, but I just LOVED that. Colin remains annoying. Come on ‘fess up. When Colin said “Baby, you’re KILLING me” in the brickyard, weren’t we all secretly hoping Christie had struck him with a handy brick? It must have taken a lot of self-control to stick to simple nagging.

Chip & Kim – I think they’re just great. How do they manage to do so well without arguing all the time? It was nice to hear that they were having this as a honeymoon since they’d never had one. They’re very sweet. Again, they were very polite and even thought to thank their bus driver. Go Chip! Go Kim! I think they have a pretty good idea of Colin’s true nature and stroking his ego is probably a good thing. Make him think he’s superman.

The Bowling Moms – I liked them a little less this week, so Chip & Kim are now my standout faves. Linda seems to have taken on Mirna’s role of chief whiner. After Chip & Kim, though, they're still my #2 pick.

The Twins – Beth76 & Puffkin – How funny was that? Do you think maybe the guy was hoping for a little something extra for his $200? He said “Twins!” with a big smirk like it was a life-long fantasy come true. Did anyone get a look at their identical vamp expressions when they were trying for money? They were hilarious!

Brandon & Nicole – Nicole said (exact quote) “They have those church things everywhere, don’t they?”. Then she asked if they were called mosques or something like that, and added that they were on every corner like Starbucks. Hands up if you think comparative theology is Nicole’s strong suit. I think her remark was made mostly in ignorance, rather than in an attempt to be offensive, though. Don’t these people read up on other countries, cultures, religions, monetary systems before they go? I think Brandon was secretly relieved that Nicole wouldn’t get her head shaved, since that let him off the hook, too. I have to say he was very kind and supportive when they were returning to the brickyard.

Next Week - It looks like the AR gang is going to have some fun with a zorb ball. Do you think this means they're heading to New Zealand next? A friend told me an AR group had been spotted in New Zealand last spring.

Saturday Nights – It’s fine with me if AR6 airs on Saturday nights, since like Luckymommyx2 & BuzznBelle’smom I’m in most Saturday nights. I remember when I used to have a social life with actual people who wanted to spend time with me, but now it’s usually just DH and I on the sofa after the kids are in bed. In fact Saturday night is usually an awful TV night until 11:30 or so, and AR would be a welcome addition.

You can't tell, but I'm raising my hand! ::yes::

I don't think I would have shaved my head either. How embarrassing to be on national television and be bald. If someone said to me 'shave your head and I will hand you a million dollars right here,' then maybe, but for a just a 'chance' to win? I'm not that lucky and then I would be bald and broke :)

Yes, but...the first place team usually receives a big prize like a cruise. I would probably do it for that too. Again, I could wear a hat. A friend of mine (age 28) had a brain tumor and is on chemo now. So, she doesn't have any hair. If she could live with it then I could live with it.

I actually like Brandon & Nicole, but it doesn't seem to me like they are probably big readers. I have to say that intellect doesn't seem to be one of their strongest attributes. It often seems that Brandon has trouble reading/pronouncing parts of the clues and Nicole appears clueless almost as often as the twins do! I was also suprised in Egypt when noone seemed to know what a scarab was. Colin thought it was a sword? (sabre, scabbard maybe?) Colin & Christie just drive me crazy! My dh watched last weeks show and said if Christie was his daughter he would have some words or more with Colin for treating her that way.

I'll continue to root for Chip & Kim. I hope they come in first in another leg or two to get some more trips. They seem to enjoy all the experiences, good and bad.

I'm willing to cut Linda some slack. It was overwhelmingly crowded, there was a language barrier, it was probably really hot, and the racers are no doubt exhausted by now. India's tough; it's done in quite a few teams on past races.

In fact Brandon and Nicole had basically given up and conceded elimination. He said he was able to make the bricks on the second attempt because the pressure was off. That tells me that they had mentally stopped competing.

It's a real grind, and I can't blame anyone for not being at their best.

My father passed away from cancer when I was 16 and he was basically bald for the last 2 years of his life. He was pointed and stared at, laughed at, made fun of... everytime we were in public, by parents and their children. I could never voluntarily put myself in a situation like that because it would bring back too many painful memories. That's the basis behind what I was saying.
