After reading in today's Desert Dispatch where Bobby's unit was camped in an area full of camel manure and camel ticks, I couldn't quite imagine....and then I saw this photo.

I bet this war is not having a great effect on the camels :) I didn't realize that they have all thse wild camels. Can you imagine what it smells like? YUCK

For some reason, I never thought about camels roaming wild like deer or moose!

Thanks for posting that photo!

Are camels in Iraq like the buffalo or long horn cattle used to be here in the US? Or is that a herd that belongs to someone.

Neat photo, thanks

I get the feeling that they're wild - like herds of buffalo would be here.

I've been wondering about the camels wondering around too. I didn't know they roamed wild like that.

That picture reminds me of the old Iraqi folk song....

Oh, give me a home
Where the dromedaries roam....
:teeth:

(A dromedary camel is one with one hump. Bactrian camels have two humps. :) ).

My friend that is over there right now is a pilot of a CH-46E Sea Knight - the kind showed in this picture. He sent some pictures home for us to see, and one was of the herd of camels running across the desert from right below the heli! It was such a cool pic! Looks just like this, but from 100 feet directly above them! All the tracks in the desert and stuff...

I'm sure it's such an awesome sight to see. Too bad they are doing it under the conditions they are. I'm sure it does smell "different".
