I think people tend to get confused when they don't know about hiphop and don't care to listen to it for various reasons. For instance, people will say 'i hate rap, they blast it so loud out their windows i can't stand it'.. Well it's not the artists fault that your neighbor blasts rap out their car stereo, so it's hardly a good reason to dislike the music. A lot of rap/hip hop is really good music. Another thing people don't realize is that the music they play on MTV/radio is not necissarily good rap. Just as brittany spears is not necissarily good music, but they still play TONS of it on the radio, and people pay all kinds of money to buy the CDs and go to concerts. There's a great deal of rap/hiphop that confronts emotions and social issues. Many rap/hiphop artists write their own lyrics, which is more than we can say about a lot of artists in just about any other genre of 'popular' music (again, brittany spears.. etc). In many cases it's a form of art, or poetry, that's how it's artists feel about it. To me, it's a shame to see how people discredit it as music (won't name any names, but it's obvious from this thread). Someone mentioned that it's all about degrading women, drugs and killing people, it's obvious to me that people who feel that way have not explored it sufficiently. As someone else said, there is a ton of rap/hiphop that holds much more substance, but if you think about it, people write about what they know. I've heard pleanty of rap that mentions drugs, but if you really listen many of these artists have similar goals, to get out of poverty, have children and raise them to go to school and get a decent education, etc.
