Am I the only one that hates the beach?

I know that I live where thousands of people plan and plan for years to take a vacation. I live about 10-15 miles from the beach, but it takes 30 minutes to drive due to the traffic. I took dd down to the Keys this year, and hubby took her to the beach a few weeks ago, so I thought I had dodged the bullet this year as school starts next week. Nope!! She was begging, so off we go today.

First is lugging all the crap over from the parking place, over the sand, up some stairs, down some stairs, etc. Finally made it to the beach. Laid out the blanket which was immediately covered with sand and started blowing away in the wind. Saw lots of umbrellas blowing across the beach with silly looking people chasing them. At that point I am glad I couldn't find our beach umbrella. Later when I am burned to a crisp, I wished I had it. At least chasing it down the beach in the breeze would have kept me cool.

Then sitting in the shallows where the rip tides are just begging to drag me out to sea, never to be seen again. I get so worried about my dd that I beg her not to go above her ankles, so poor thing tries to ride the 6 inch waves. So I decide I really, really need a beer as I have had enough SUN and FUN!! So I get a beer and am standing in calf deep water when a wave knocks me down and the rip tide proceeds to drag me under. I hurt my wrist as I tried to catch my fat butt as it fell, and to add insult to injury, I lost my beer.

So I tell dd I have had enough. Pack up the crap, drag it over the sand, up the stairs, down the stairs, to the van. Home we go. Get home and my van seats are soaking wet. van is full of sand. DD and i take showers so both bathrooms are full of sand. Not to mention that I think there is sand on my body where no man has gone before......... :lmao: And now I have a sunburn.

Did I mention I hate the beach :beach:

Nope, I hate it too. I live in South Jersey only a hour or so away from OC, and AC and I hate to go. I hate the hot sun that makes me sweat and causes the sand stick to unmentionable places, I hate slathering on slick, slippery sunscreen and still getting burned anyway, I hate, HATE seagulls, and I hate dragging all the necessary crap through the sand. Nope, not a beach person at all, but I do like the beer idea. :drinking1

Aww you lost your beer?! I hate when that happens! And believe me, we love our beer on the beach! ;) Seriously, I could see how if I had my car there tracking all of the sand in it plus lugging all of the chairs, etc. from the car to the beach would be a pain in the rear.

When we go to the beach, it's always when we've rented a house or a condo on the beach so we don't have far to go. And I make DH lug the cooler and chairs :teeth: .

So...I guess if I lived near the beach I may not appreciate it as much. (Maybe, not sure :confused3 )

Oh, and I'm still jealous that you're so close! ;)

You are not alone. I hate the beach. I think it has been over 20 years since I have been to the beach.

I actually think I wouldn't like to live near the beach. I would think sand would be everywhere. In my car, in my house. I've been to the beach 3 times in my life and I loved it. But I was on vacation and had all the beach amenities handed to me and all the sand left at the airport. If I had to come from home, I think it would be a pain.

 I hate the beach too. I spent every weekend at the Delaware shore when I was a kid and I guess I just burnt out on the beach. I don't mind going once in awhile but it is not where I
would go for a vacation.

well, I don't care if you like the beach or not....geesh....did you have to go and spill the beer? Isn't that alcohol abuse? Remember next time, above all else...save the beer. ;)

The word "hate" and the word "beach" do not belong in the same sentence! :rotfl2:

I LOVE the beach! I love the sand and the smell of the ocean. I love swimming and snorkeling. I love walking along the water's edge and hunting for shells, sea glass, sand dollars, and driftwood. I love the smell of sunscreen. I love...well, you get the picture. :teeth:

Funny thing is, we've always lived within a few miles of the beach, and in some cases within walking distance, but my favorite place to go on vacation is to a beach! The beaches where we live are different from the beaches in warmer climates. The sand is usually a bit darker and coarser, and the water is VERY COLD!! I refuse to swim in the ocean up here in the Arctic!

My favorite vacations have been those where I've spent time on a warm, sunny beach with fine, white sand and clear blue/green water. :sunny:

Oh yeah, about the beer. I bet there are a few tipsy fish having fun right now! :lmao:

Heat + sweat + sand + overly accessible butt cracks = misery.
Give me a pool any day of the week.

See that would explain it. where I live the sand is coarse and full of glass that some drunk left (notice that wasn't me as I had a plastic cup..... :rotfl2: ). Seaweed is so extensive that it winds around your ankles and the sea looks black from it. I must have had some stuck to my swim suit because after my shower I noticed 2 small pieces in there. Now tell me how I can rinse off at the beach, drive 30 minutes home, change clothes and still have seaweed in my shower. Riddle me that Batman!! :rotfl:

The beach. Oh yes the beach. Where I search and search for a parking spot. When I find one, it is nowhere near, where I want to be. I drag out our earthly possessions to make our stay a little more comfortable. :teeth:

We march to a location (I don't care what people claim, you cannot walk on sand. At least not dignified). We begin the trek. Or is it the schlep?

I have to lather myself with slimy coconut smells that usually make me want to barf. I stick to the blanket and or beach chair I have dragged down to the sand with me (so I don't have to sit on the sand). One good breeze and I am covered with sand. So why did I drag the blanket and chair?

Within a short space of time, I am covered in more sand from passerbys. I have sand on my hands, so everything I touch becomes sandy. The food is sandy and my teeth have so much sand between them, I can start my own beach.

Just when I think it can't get any worse, it does. I have to go to the bathroom (a location I am nowhere near) and have to get up and trek through the sand once again. Did I mention, I too, hate, loathe and detest anything having to do with the beach.

Mom21, I couldn't have said it better myself. You nailed all the reason why I hate the beach. I lived in FL for 15 years and now that I live in Kansas, people here hear me say I hate the beach and they look at me like I've sprouted a new head.

It's not my fave destination, no. I don't enjoy sweating, nor do I enjoy being dirty. I don't enjoy eating outside, either, which seems like the thing you're supposed to do at a beach. Plus it's so much trouble to drag all the junk out there just to sit and sweat in the dirt.

I'd much rather grab a float, a pina colada, and a book and float in the pool. Now THAT is my idea of a relaxing vacation. ;)

(I will say that I was in Charleston in March and I went to the beach in my jeans and laid on a towel and read a book. THAT was fine; I wasn't hot, I didn't drag a bunch of stuff out there, I didn't get wet or dirty, I didn't have to bring food/drink, wasn't crowded, it was beautiful. I just don't enjoy the summer beach scene, I guess)

Me too, here in Miami you have to PAY to get on the beach. Than, there is trash all over, and the water is, most of the time, polluted so you can't swim. :sad2:

I don't hate it, per se, but I sure don't love it either. I don't mind going once, maybe twice a year, but that's it. And those trips can really only be a few hours. I've never understood the people that spend thousands on week at the beach. I get bored too easily. Granted up here there are two extremes found in a day at the beach, hot air, and wicked cold water. So you either die of heat sitting on the beach, or die from hypothermia if you go swimming. I hate that feeling of being covered from head to toe in sand. The last time I was at the beach here some storm off shore had stirred up all the sea weed and walking into the water was like walking through extra thick grass. Seriously, the water was essentially all sea weed, and we were waist deep in it before it thinned out a bit. Disgusting.

come to the beach with me.....you will have fun
