Am I the only one NERVOUS about the vaccine? And I’m very PRO-VAX

I was apprehensive before getting the vaccine (I got J&J), but I’m way more scared of Covid. A lot of my friends are doctors, including one in the ICU working regularly with the worst Covid patients, and the stories we have heard are heartbreaking. Young, healthy people have died from it. There are also those who seemingly recover and months later suddenly die. A lot of doctors have PTSD and have undergone counseling due to the trauma they experienced with all the deaths and the way they happen. My friend has held up her phone so patients can FaceTime family members before they die alone in the hospital. I would much rather get the vaccine than risk getting severe Covid.

I don't think this vaccine has been out long enough for testing. And some people are getting angry about people not getting it. They need to stop and think it may have something to health wise and told not to take it. For me I have no idea what is in it that I maybe allergic to. I have no family to find out what I could be allergic to. I broke my wrist and they had to reset it, and gave me a shot of Lidocaine and was allergic. So no I will only take something that I know what is in it. I also had a pastor who was adopted and he needed surgery and it was a good thing he did not do as the stuff he was to be put under with would have killed. He met his biologiacal mon and was made aware.

I’m going to throw something out that’s been bothering me for a while.

One of the fears with the vaccine is the fear of unknown side-effects in the future. But shouldn’t that go up with unknown side-effects of covid in the future?

I mean... I had chickenpox as a kid. I missed the vaccine approval by months. And over two decades later I had shingles. I know the chickenpox vaccine isn’t perfect, but it does reduce shingles risk for those who have had it.

Actually, the chickenpox vaccine is the reason more and more young people are getting shingles. Before the vaccine, most would have chicken pox and form an immunity. As the person got older, they would be exposed to their kids or a family member's kids that contracted chicken pox and it would be an inoculation for their immune system. This would happen less and less as a person got older and if they had a deficiency in their immune system or extreme stress the virus could reemerge as shingles. This inoculation isn't happening now so young adults are having this happen. But, don't worry. They have come up with a vaccine for shingles.

Ok, we just had our second dose of Moderna yesterday. Last night had a headache. I slept OK (funny I wasn't able to fall asleep until 1:00 am though) but this morning my arm is very sore and swollen. Lethargy, continuing headache and chills are the current symptoms. Husband is feeling about the same.

The shot itself did not hurt at all...really didn't even feel it. The odd thing was that like the first dose, they ask you sit in the waiting room for 15 minutes to see if you have a reaction....but Walgreen's pharmacy shuts down for lunch for an hour so as soon as we had our shots and sat down to wait they rolled down the pharmacy gate (solid, not see through) and no one was around to see if we keeled over anyway. We sat for about 2 minutes and then went home.

I'll be honest. I was in no hurry at all to get the vaccine. I wanted to wait awhile before I committed to getting it. Nothing to do with not believing the seriousness of the virus or being an anti vaxxer but personally, I was not fearful. I felt people who really wanted it should get it first. I know many people who have had it and recovered from Covid with no major symptoms and I know a few who have died. I truly think much depends on your own personal physiology. Some get it really bad, some don't. There was such an urgency with people scrambling to get it that I was happy to wait until July or so when originally my age group would be eligible. It so happened that our age group became eligible in March. We heard Walgreen's was giving leftover doses so we popped in and asked at our local Walgreen's and they told us to come back the next day. So we got it. I want to be able to travel abroad and my fear is that it may be required.

The science is now saying kids don't need to be 6 ft away anymore in school and that 3 ft is OK. That's good. The science also said recently that you do not have to disinfect every surface in your home repeatedly and that regular soap and water will be enough as long as no one with covid symptoms has been in your home in the last 24 hours. Surfaces are very low in the method of transmitting the virus. That is also good to hear. We are moving forward and I am hopeful. As I said in another thread I hate how the media seems to want to instill fear. I'd rather they instill hope.

OT, but we recently travelled to Florida and the Pacific Northwest and felt perfectly safe on the plane, at WDW and in the hotels. I just do not understand the requirement for ages 2 and above to wear masks. The science says that age group is very low risk for spreading it. I think age 5 and up is more reasonable. I think FAs have their hands full trying to enforce adult mask mandates let alone 2 year olds who can't understand the why of it. If the airlines feel it is OK to sit people shoulder to shoulder on a plane they should understand the risk of a 2 year old spreading the virus is very low. My biggest worry of the whole trip to Florida was if our 3 year old grandson would be keep his mask on during the flight. He did but only because we bribed him with frequent snack breaks. That age just doesn't understand doing it for health reasons.

I just want it all to be over. Sorry I got on a rant there!

Do you have any idea how condescending this comes off? Perhaps that was your intent.

That is frankly impossible. I do not believe that not a single death has occurred due to the vaccine. There are always deaths from anaphylactic reactions, always. To claim that there have been NO deaths just makes everything else reported questionable.

Someone else I didn't quote also said it was a conspiracy to think our government would experiment on us. Have you never heard about the Tuskegee Syphilis study? Yes, I know it was a different time and no, I don't believe that is likely to happen again but I would never rule it out because...history.
I said linked. It’s important to not take what I said of context. And to realize I was quoting a list of people who’s deaths have not been linked to the vaccine.

I’ve heard of this! Still, I’d rather kids go ahead and get the shot now than try to “boost” all of us who had the old-fashioned chickenpox experience.

I do really want the shingles vaccine- I’m just not approved for it based on my age. Hopefully they allow me to get it before I age another few decades!

Not for me, but think about this.... The vaccine doesn't prevent contracting covid. It just prevents symptoms or serious symptons. So, your body is still going to be exposed to the covid virus and maybe that will cause side-effects in the future too. And we don't know how the wild virus will "play" with the vaccine they give you.

Get the chicken pox vaccine now, yes. But, a chicken pox vaccine was probably not necessary and has caused unintended consequences for some people. Sometimes, natural immunity is better :-)

Vaccine induced immunity has already been proven (over and over again) to be superior to immunity from natural infection. It has been studied for as long as vaccines have been around. How do you not yet know this? This is the entire reason why vaccines are a thing.

As you know this is just not true. Why are you spreading dangerous misinformation?

I probably missed some context from the evolution of this thread, but VAERS clearly spells out on its website that they do not verify that these adverse effects were caused by the vaccine.

https://vaers.hhs.gov/data/dataguide.html
“A report to VAERS generally does not prove that the identified vaccine(s) caused the adverse event described. It only confirms that the reported event occurred sometime after vaccine was given. No proof that the event was caused by the vaccine is required in order for VAERS to accept the report. VAERS accepts all reports without judging whether the event was caused by the vaccine.”

Coincidence is not the same as cause, and VAERS doesn’t determine which it was.

That is true but you also can't say for certain that the vaccine isn't the cause. That is what make assessing safety so difficult as it is always based on the doctor's opinion. The doctor could be wrong either way in saying that it was related or it wasn't. That is why you are supposed to report everything so that any trends can be established.

We also do a terrible job of really looking at safety data once a drug/vaccine is on the market. It takes many events to overturn an approval.

Soooo, those of us who trust the vaccine are somehow irrational or stupid? That's a really offensive inference.

It's the same inference many have made when you mention you aren't going to take the vaccine or are hesitant to do so. Just look at the post above yours.

Can you tell me where you read that, because this article says that kids who had the chicken pox vaccine have a much lower rate of getting shingles than someone who didn't get the vaccine: Can the Chickenpox Vaccine Cause Shingles Later in Life? | Live Science
"Nearly 99 percent of children who receive the vaccine will not get chickenpox at all," Schaffner told Live Science. "The remaining 1 percent who do get it will get a much milder version of it. Therefore, a vast majority of people receiving the immunization will not develop shingles later in life."

I work in clinical research too.
Do you work in the scientific, clinical and statistical analysis part of it, or in the FDA submission parts of it? Do you have first hand knowledge of the rigour involved?
Just wondering.
I'm a Sr. CTM and have been running studies since 2006 and have probably worked across 50 or so clinical trials all over the world during my career so yes, I have direct knowledge of the rigour that is supposed to be involved and the serious questions about the lack of safety reporting in some of these trials. Not to mention the amount of money that was given to participants - over $1000 as reported by some of the volunteers on this site and a few others I have been to.

I also know the history of research and how we have not gotten it right all the time and the limitations. If you aren't looking for something you aren't going to find it.
