My high school had a "no coats in class" rule, as you could hide just about anything under them; food, cell phones, Discmans (Yes, I'm old), guns. We had four buildings, with outdoor walkways, and this was in Michigan. I remember crossing to the vocational building for typing and to the music building for band during winter, but maybe we were just hardier than the average kids?

I believe we were allowed cardigan-type sweaters though.
