Am I overeacting??

Yes you are over reacting but it's not your fault. The media is telling you the sky is falling. I might think twice about going to Mexico but not to DL Getting the flu stinks anyway, and I always take precautions anyway. I had to laugh yesterday at Costco. There was this guy, looked like he was in his early 20's, and what looked like his mother. The guy had on a mask, his mother did not. He was pushing the shopping cart. I almost asked him, "did you wipe down the handle of that shopping cart?" I guarantee you the handle of that cart was yuckier than anything he would be breathing in Costco. I have been wiping shopping carts down with a wipe for years and it seemed to really help keep my kids from getting colds, although I can't prove it.

Am I worried about being in Anaheim at DL and the swine flu? No.

What I am a tiny bit concerned about is being on the plane, in a confined space, with a bunch or people with re-circulated air. But I'm always concerned about this when I travel. I don't want to be sick on vacation. I don't want to get sick with swine flu or anything else for that matter. I'm going to try to be diligent about hand sanitizer and not touching my face for the duration of the trip. I just don't want to be sick AND away from home. That would be really sucky.

Something like 30,000 people die every year from influenza, but you don't hear about that. I agree with PP's regarding the media creating an artificial panic. I don't know the exact odds, but you are probably more likely to get hit by a bus than contracting the swine flu. HAVE FUN! :thumbsup2

If you survived SARS and bird flu, you will survive swine, I mean Mexican, I mean H1N1, flu.

Just thought i would also offer this, the number of cases confirmed in bc is only 3 behind california, so i think with our number per capita, we are safer in california :cool1:

Right now we have a gastro illness going through our town, it is crazy...a friend of mine told me her sons class had 14 kids away today (that means only 7 or 8 were there):scared1:... My sil just had it and puked 19 times in 1 day...here's to hoping and praying none of my family get this :rolleyes1

Maybe the kid himself had a cold or something and was just being respectful?

Yay! Have a great time! :)

(With the evidence that initially came out, I think people were right to be concerned, and I wouldn't call anyone silly for worrying a bit. Initially the people who were hit hardest were young adults, which is the same demographic that the 1918 flu tended to kill. So even if you just took the numbers as they were (without taking media hyperbole into account), it did look like it had the potential to be the same type of virus that killed 500,000 Americans and many millions worldwide--some of whom dropped dead the same day they first started showing symptoms. :(

But thankfully, the flu seems to have mutated into something very much like the ordinary flu, which can be dangerous to some people but is overall something we humans are very used to. :) )

hi connie107, i am in bc also, and while this is a little stressful, we are planning on leaving for seattle tomorrow and flying to DL saturday morning...my dh and i have had discussions, and decided this flu is already here in bc, we have 6 confirmed cases, 1 being on vancouver island where we are from...i had my youngest daughter in to have her ears checked for flying and asked my doctor his opinion, he told me to have a great trip with a very big smile ( i trust my doctor very much)..he also said the problem with something like this flu-the media takes it and runs and causes panic :confused3:...I have told my kids wash, wash, wash and not touch their faces...good advice anyway...as for people and masks, they say they really dont work anyways...when my youngest was born, she spent 7 weeks in the hospital for being a preemie and needing surgery...at one point, me and my other 2 kids, had a slight cold..well, the childrens hospital had us put on the masks to prevent spreading it to her, the mask did NOT go on her to prevent her from getting it...kinda interesting when i think back to that...anyways, while it is scary, i told me dh that we are not taking our kids into something that they would not be exposed to here, because unfortunately it is already here...

I am curious where in bc you are from and if you had the same flu that flew thru here in february...my younger two kids and dh were sicker than i have ever seen...high, high, high fever, worst sore throat any of them had ever had, coughing to the point their stomach muscles were in agony...my youngest dd had 103-104 temp for 8 days (had a double ear infection also, but day 4 of the antibiotics and still a high fever), both kids missed a full week of school...anyways, flus are awful and scary no matter what!!! Good luck deciding, i understand how you feel...

We caught that same strain of flu here in Washington. It sucked my kids were sick for 10 days.
We leave a week from Saturday for Disneyland. I'm hoping crowds will be low.
Have a great time.

I'm on the Island and had that flu too. Bleh. Aparently that one was everywhere because the vaccine didn't cover it this year. I don't think I'd even care about the swine flu if I didn't JUST go through that lol...I'm not ready for another flu :rotfl: Also we are going on vacation in three weeks, I'm more worried about getting it before we go and not being able to fly than getting sick in NY.
