Am I Nuts?? 'Ohana vs O'hana

That one really annoys me!!!! :headache:

That would me too! I wonder if your neighbor is seriously thinks that is how you say it?? Sometimes when I'm joking around I'll say "I'm going to Dis A ney World", that really irriates my husband. :lmao:

Oh yeah, that's how he really thinks it's pronounced. He's also told us that his wife and kids hate going to Disney, so when they're in Florida he drops them at the beach and goes by himself to Epcot for one day, but no rides or anything, just to walk around. :confused3 I don't get it.

First post here, but I've been lurking long enough to be truly annoyed when people wish to discuss their 'dinning' plans.

YES! That makes me crazy as well! Or how about "restraunt", and not just a typo, really thinking that's the spelling. Oh, this is making my head hurt.

Speaking of misspelling restaurant, one thing I see and hear a lot is the erroneous "restauranteur" (the owner of a restaurant). It's "restaurateur" without the 'n' in the word.

Back to WDW, the spelling of Akershus is mangled by lots of people. And yesterday I read a post complaining about the buffet at Garden Grill. Since there isn't a buffet there, other posters figured OP meant Garden Grove at the Swan. I bet a few people get confused with those two names.

Amen. I cringe when people do those things in their posts. Or worse with the texting stuff - using U instead of you or BC instead of because. I want to read things, not have my mind interpreting what you just wrote.

I've noticed that people (or, well, kids) are now either using yhu or yew for you instead of u. I get u. I do not get yhu or yew. If I'm going to "abbreviate" something, it's going to have FEWER letters than what I started with!

I hear you! My biggest complaint is when definitely is spelled with an a.

I know I woman who can't spell definitely so she writes def. in all of her Facebook posts! Just don't use the word if you can't spell it! It makes her look like a bigger fool to abbreviate it! LOL

Can I name one that bugs me?

Hate this: "We were sat at our table by the hostess."
Try this: "We were seated at our table by the hostess."

Thank you! I feel much better.

I get really annoyed by then/than and by accident/on accident. I also think commas are important!

my peeve is "alot" it's two words :)

this seems to happen a lot everywhere :thumbsup2

My high school Advanced Grammar and Composition teacher wouldn't even allow the use of a lot. He would always say a lot is a piece of land where you build a dog house. LOL. I still use "a lot", but I think of him and feel guilty every time. LOL.

Well, few of us speak or write Hawaiian, but that's not the only problem. We also have problems with our own native language...

your, you're
its, it's

and it's not just the apostrophe...

their, there, they're
two, to, too
etc., etc., etc

Clearly, speaking and writing English is not one of our nation's strongest suits.

This bugs me. A lot.

It also bothers me when people say could've/could have went instead of could've/could have gone. That drives me up a wall!

Do you use "a lot" a .lot? Lol

And as for 'Ohana, I've seen it on here so many different ways that I didn't know which one was correct until this thread. :confused3

Grammar mistakes bug me because I had it drilled into me. I don't really understand misspellings. Am I the only one who has the computer underline misspelled words in red? I consider myself a decent speller but the computer catches any typos or misspellings.

Some people have brains that just work this way: a brain that notices grammar and spelling issues and it drives them nuts! It is a pet peeve of many, myself included, though probably best overlooked on a board as large as this one as you'll never know what you set yourself up for.

What's even worse with all these Grammar issues, is so many younger people are using text language when writing (vs texting). I read a statement of a young guy the other day and he used common texting abbreviations in the writing. Oh, and to top it off, on part of the statement, he made the comment, "I'm not stoopid".:scratchin :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I really feel for teachers these days!!

English is such a great language. In what other language do "fat chance" and "slim chance" have the same meaning. :rotfl:

Or the phrase "You can never have too much (insert word here)". Does it mean, you should always have more, or you should never have too much?

I remember an old SNL skit, and the guy that ran a nuclear plant, last words were "Remember, you can never have too much water". Then they were left wondering....do we need to add water, because you can't have enough...or will things go downhill if they added too much water?" At the end, they showed the guy who ran the nuclear plant on a island and he see's a mushroom cloud and he says "I told them, you can never have too much water!". :rotfl:

How about. I will see you after. Instead of I will see you later. After what? Haahaa. My Mom says this all the time. I still don't know after what. It has been x$&&*-* years. Still waiting for after something! :confused3 :rotfl2: :)

But why do people even say "see you later". 99% of the time they will not bee seeing you 'later'. Another day? Yes. Later? Probably not.

These past two years having survived a car accident that almost killed me, losing my younger brother to a heart attack at 45, and watching my mother battle cancer, I guess I'm just not bothered how someone spells or pronounces a restaurant at WDW. Just me. :goodvibes

Agreed.

My anti-seizure med (I actually misspelled "seizure" and had to correct it.) messes with my memory and cognitive skills.

Good think I dont have 2 worry about peeple misunderstanding me on a Disneyland message board. I wud b very sad and upset about that. I mite have 2 even go 2 my doctors 2 get his advise on how 2 handle the situation. Therapy may be the way 2 go. B'cuz some peeple just have no thing better 2 do than grip about how peeple spell.

Maybe i will feel better if i go to supper @Akerhaus, tangerine cafe, or ohanas. Take my mind off things, KWIM? Hopefully I can get ressies.
