Am I making a mistake going to US instead of Disney??

What about the Mummy ride? I am very worried this coaster is too intense. My DD9 is VERY afraid of coaster rides, but she will go on Splash Mountain and Space Mountain.

The coaster part is similar to Space Mountain in that it is in the dark and has about the same intensity. There are two coaster parts each quite short but both in the dark. There are a couple of short little drops.

No, you are not making a mistake ... just don't go into the park comparing the two. Everyone who does gets disappointed.

Can I just say that those who have responded to the post have been cordial and helpful? Imagine posting a thread entitled "Am I making a mistake going to Disney instead of US??" on the Disney Theme Park Board. You'd hardly get as helpful and pleasant responses.

BTW, you didn't mention where you'd be staying and when you'd be going. Nothing beats staying on-site and unlimited express, especially during busy season.

Have a nice trip!

Ok, I have 3 kids 13-11-9, who love disney, I decided to try US, IOA and SW this trip instead of disney. While we like some rides we are not exactly super coaster people, my kids like RNR coaster, and TOT but that is about the limit, I am now worried that US/IOA might be too intense for them

No! We just did the same thing and enjoyed it immensely. It's even better if you stay onsite at US/IOA.

My DS is 9. He loves RnR and Space Mountain, but has proclaimed he will never do Hulk. He might do Dueling Dragons one day he said and he loved the Mummy. Mummy has scary effects, but the ride itself is no more intense then Space Mountain IMO. Plus you can't see the tracks, which what seems to bother my son. If its in the dark, he's okay with it.

You're definitely not making a mistake. My children (DD 15 & DS 13) can't wait to go. We did a day at US three years ago precruise and 1/2 a day at BG precruise 2 years ago. When we started talking about going to Orlando this year they didn't even want to go to WDW (we've been several times). We're getting the 5 park flex pass to do US/IOA/SW/BG/WNW. I'm sure we're going to have just as much (if not more) fun as we did at WDW.

My 3 boys are 3-6-9, and my 6 and 9 year old love US/IOA, they are more excited to go there then to go to Disney. Your kids will be fine, the only 3 rides that scare me between both parks are Hulk, Dr. Doom, and Dueling Dragons, but my dh and oldest son go on all 3!

Absolutely not, I actually prefer Universal Orlando to Dis, especially the Islands of Adventure park, but preferably I like to do both.

Depends on your family. My sister went to US/IOA instead of WDW with her hubby, DS10 and DS12 and they had the time of their lives. They all four rode everything and nothing, I mean NOTHING was too much for them. My DD8 (at the time) hated everything - she is a non-riding worrier and the only thing she would do was Cat In The Hat, not even the fish (comparible to Dumbo). She was even scared of the show next to Dueling Dragons!

Forward to this year...took her to WDW (granted, she's 10, but still) and she worked her courage up starting in October with Spaceship Earth at Epcot, working all the way thru EPCOT (except Mission Space and Test Track), she finally went to MK, started in Fantasyland and ended up finally doing Big Thunder (a big deal for her). Now she wants to go every weekend (thank goodness, lol). But talk to my sister and they won't even consider WDW...too 'baby' for them, even with RnRc and Everest.
:confused3

All parks have something great to offer. No doubt if you're looking, you'll find something good at all of them, and figure out what everyone's favorite is in the journey.

Have fun!!!

In all honesty, Mummy is more intense than Space Mountain, trust me. My family (Wife, 13/11 boys, and I) loved it, but not everyone will. Might be good to have an adult ride first and make a judgement call from there about the kids.

Again shows how opinions are different. I dont like Space Mountain because it is so rough. More intense? Ehhhh.....
The thing about Mummy is that it has effects, it gets in your head.
I have a 16 yr old sister who loves Mummy, but hates Space Mountain. She is deathly afraid of it, but she will ride mummy all day long.

The "get in your head" part is what worries me. We have planned 2 trips to Universal and after reading one of the guide books decided both times that DD now7 wasn't ready. She is a daredevil about the rides (loves Space) but doesn't like the scary theming. T of T is on the edge for her in terms of being scary. She will do it because she likes the drop but closes her eyes until we get to the drop part. Even the shows seem kind of on the darker, more scary side in the guide book. Again this year we are considering a trip, those $85 tickets are a great deal but I don't want to scare her!

Darker? Come on. Check out Robvias page http://nogodforme.com
he has lots of Universal vids and pics.

Does that look darker to you?
macys013.jpg

Maybe that?

Now thats scary

But that is the scariest of them all.
Just take a chance.....you can always do child swap for rides you think might be too much a step away from disney goodness and ride it first.

Thanks for the great pictures. The kids are adorable!

I mean "dark" in 7year old terms. We wouldn't allow her to watch Twister or Juassic Park or Mummy yet so I am in doubt about putting her "in" the experience. On the other hand her favorite shows are Spounge Bob and the Odd Parents. So I know she would like that. For us it is a long trip from STL and I don't want to fly all that way and then wish we had waited a while longer. Ya know?!

No, my son was 7 our first trip. My daughter was 3. They were not allowed to watch the movies, but they were able to go on the rides. Anything we were questionable about, we simply did child swap. I also checked a lot of things out on the web before our first trip, and asked my son if he wanted to try them. Now of course she wont do Hulk, Doom, or Dragons. But she likes Splash Mountain? She'll love Dudley Do Right, she likes Space mountian, she'll love the mummy. She likes Jungle Cruise, she'll love JAWS. Buzz Lightyear? MIB will blow her away.
It just seems silly to listen to all the disney people who say Universal is too intense for their kids. Do the research, and judge for yourself. We've given you all the tools we have.

We equated Mummy to Expedition Everest in order to determine if our children should even try Mummy. Our son, who loved EE, did Mummy and loved it as well. Our daughter, who loves Rock n Roller coaster and Space Mountain, wouldn't even consider EE. She felt the same about Mummy, had no desire to even try it and we didn't push it on her.

HTH!

abysdad - We went to Universal this summer and stayed for 6 days. Our son was 11. We had a blast and would like to return. Oh yeah - we missed all the big headliners - Dragons, Hulk, Mummy, Dr. Doom, as the hubby is a coaster wimp and the son wasn't "brave" enough yet.

BOTTOM LINE - WE HAD A BLAST!!!

GO and stay onsite at one of the hotels.

P.S. I did a trip report in July 2007 - it should still be on the boards if you search for it.

You should probably let her skip the Mummy. It can be pretty scary to some kids even older than 7. Ride MIB instead.

Go onto you tube and check out some of the ride videos. Let her watch and she will probably know which ones she doesn't want to see in real life.

Spent a month in Orlando last fall, 2 weeks at the Disney parks and two weeks at the universal parks. My kids 10 and 12 preferred the Universal parks and as adults we also preferred all that our flex pass offered. Isle of adventure was everybody's favorite.
