Am I getting old or is this horribly wrong?

I've read through a lot of this thread but just don't have the stomach to read it all. It is absolutely beyond me and it greatly saddens me to see anyone defend this routine.

I've seen Showstoppers mentioned. My DD9 happened to compete at last weekends competition. They won first place overall (based on age group and group size). They did a jazz number with beautiful age appropriate costumes. I got to see the score sheets from the three judges. The one judge didn't make any comments in any category but the two that did mentioned how age appropriate the routine and costumes were. So, yes, it is noticed.

BTW, we saw amazing hip-hop routines with very age-appropriate dress. A good studio who is truly teaching dancing can put together great choreography, awesome costumes, and terrific music and keep it all age appropriate.

This video was the talk of the dance studio today between the competitive dancers moms. All were appalled.

I did see some things I didn't love at the Showstopper competition but nothing even close to this video. During one particular questionable number a veteran mom leaned up to me and said that that's what's great about our studio - we never have to worry about our girls being asked to look like that. And, yes some of our older dancers have won national competitions.

I just haven't been able to stop thinking about these girls today. I feel so bad for them. I wish someone would stand up for them and say that this is not ok. Where, oh where are the adults in their lives?

Well, I suppose I am in the minority but I didnt really think it was that big a deal. I sometimes think that we try and see the worst in things as a society - why can't we treat this like a dance competition as it clearly is, instead of somehow assuming the kids are purposely being sexual for some alterior motive?

Edited to add - noticed I was posting at the same time as akelly and obviously we have very different opinions LOL! Oh well, to each his own.

Yeah, vaguely. It wasn't from CNN, I did see a news blip about it though. But media often puts deceiving spins on stories for PR. The woman who had a problem with it was Americanized clearly with perfect English. You have no idea how often stuff like this happens in Brazil as I alluded to in my previous post. My uncle has a friend from Venezuela and for some people to spend time with his family during celebrations from their own country, and even the 4th of July, many would be in shock. Stuff like samba dancing is a moot issue. Also, obviously everybody in every country don't agree 100 percent on things, and my apologies if my post came across that way.
Actually, I have relatives in Brazil (and have spent enough time there to get to know the culture somewhat), and it was a pretty big deal. Many people were outraged, though for some it was more about keeping her out late at night, than her costume or dancing. :rotfl:

Of course, not every Brazilian agrees. Obviously the girl's parents thought it was fine, and my guess is that the child prostitution rings there think that's fine, too. However, many Brazilians would not write either of these things off as a "cultural norm", and I don't think we should either, nor should we use "well, they do worse in other countries" as an excuse to let our little girls dress and act provocatively.

Uh oh...that's demeaning to men. Didn't you read the whole thread? ;)

Yes I have, and apparently you didn't read my post. No where in it did I say I expected dollar bills thrown by MEN on stage.

Wow! This thread is still alive and well. :lmao:

I wonder - what is the definition of the word self-righteous? :rolleyes1

What we need are more scarlet letters. :thumbsup2

I don't see anything self-righteous about opinions...and for oh, nevermind.

 Just warning her. You et al were adamant that it was demeaning to men. :confused3

Again, didn't say anything about men. I think this video is demeaning to the children in it, but they don't know any better.

I wonder how these parents feel now- knowing that their daughters are the talk of the internet and "water coolers" across the country. :confused3

Hopefully it will knock some sense into them.

This is a link to a close-up photo of the girls in costume.
I won't post the actual photo because, frankly it disgusts me.

Oh- my- God. :scared1: There is nothing "cute" about the look the second girl from the left is giving.

excuse me?

Someone posted a similar comment about $$ and was raked over the coals saying it was demeaning to men saying they would think of such a thing... wagging the dog really- getting off topic.

Then MaryAnn had posted about the charity work her daughter is doing in Haiti and how cute the kids are down there- waking her daughter up in the mornings etc.

:scared1: the second girl from the left has obviously been taught to do the pose to match the dance moves. :scared1: A little girl should not be posing like that. There is nothing cute about that. Seeing the costumes up close with the fishnet gloves makes it even worse.

gotcha :thumbsup2

:lmao: Ah yes, good old Alanis and her English lessons. Little of the song was ironic, much of it was merely unfortunate, and having 10,000 spoons when you need a knife is just poor planning.

I believe that is a better example of hypocrisy but irony works...more so than Alanis's version of it.

:lmao: You always crack me up. Poor planning indeed....

Well thank God you are here to look out for the new posters.
If I didn't say it, you would have...again...so what's your problem? Geez...now you want to dictate WHO says what? Just filling her in.
Hey, if that doesn't work she can always post a passive agressive post about how wonderful her own daughter is.;)
Passive aggressive? :confused3 Whatever. The point wasn't about how wonderful my daughter is...even tho she is :) or I would have posted about it a week ago when she left for Haiti. This whole thread, during a time when my daughter is in Haiti, in a situation with TRULY innocent and adorable children...terms thrown around on this thread for mommy-and-daddy-approved lingerie clad little girls thrusting and gyrating provocatively on a stage...was such a contrast to me, I felt compelled to post about it. So sue me.
