Am I being snobby?

I think that when you go to WDW your expectations are higher then at other, more regional parks. Holding these higher expectations extends to everything about your trip. You expect great rides, courteous CMs, delicious meals and a comfortable bed to sleep in. These things you normally get, as WDW knows you have certain expectations, and to continue to be THE vacation hotspot they have to produce. What you cannot expect to control are the guests. Some come from other cultures with other ideas about what public conduct and cleanliness are acceptable. This is unfortunate, as they just don't know that they are being offensive to others. On the other hand, some do know better. They are just rude. These are usually the "dirty" people who can make your vacation less then ideal. Knowing better and continuing to be offensive may allow them to have a good vacation experience, but does get noticed by others. No, I do not believe you are being snobby, only observant.

I didn't come across any really rude or offensive people while at WDW in June but I completely understand what you mean by six flaggish. I would not set foot in Six Flags over Georgia in Atlanta. They have lowered the prices there also for the summer and I have heard it is horrible. The trouble makers are out in force. It has definitely become a teen hang out from what I have noticed from last summer. When I was a child it was a great place to visit. I can't stand standing by a group of people who are using the F word or the Lord's name in vain. It makes me so angry. But if you say anything to them they will cuss you out and act like they are going to beat you up. Also, last summer, line jumpers were horrible. I saw a couple stand up for themselves when a couple teens jumped in front of them and about twenty other people. The teens cussed them out. If those teens would have said that stuff to me I probably would have got myself into some trouble. And even though I call them teens it was two boys that were about 6'3 200lbs. Security should be amped up. Sorry for the rant but everyone was talking about six flags and gang banger trouble makers so I had to put in my two cents.

Also, you're not snobby at all. I expect that when people are in public they should dress decent, talk decent, and act decent. That has nothing to do with income, social status, race or religion. I can easily go to walmart, marshalls, or ross and find clothes that cover my butt and don't contain foul language. I don't like cussing in public or otherwise and it should at least not be done around kids. I don't know what has happened to the common decency that people use to have. If having morals and expecting others to have morals and self respect is snobbish than I guess I am.

I've never been to WDW in the summer. However, when we do go, I've interacted with many kind, helpful fellow tourists while waiting in lines, etc--a much larger percentage than anywhere else I've vacationed. Of course, I've also run into some people with a pretty large entitlement issue but social status and wealth seems to have little to do with it.

I really think that the majority of the time, I get back what I give. I'm a chit chatter and have a great time talking with other people. And, I tend to try to not focus on those that seem to think they "deserve" to shove others out of the way to make their own vacation magical but remember people like the teenage boy on the monorail that I bonded with over our mutual disgust for turkey legs or the adorable little girl with whom my teenage dd shared her cotton candy while we waited in line or the sweet little boy who was so busy telling me about every moment of his vacation that he almost followed me back to my hotel room as we were getting off the boat at the Dolphin. The latter folks make my vacations to WDW more magical.

Jtopp and BrideToBeDisney, that is exactly what I was talking about!!! Thank you for your input.

I don't think you're snobby just because you have standards. I feel exactly the same way, too!

We were at WDW. I hate to say this but there seemed to be a lot of "dirty" people, and I don't mean hot and sweaty.

I am wondering about the dirty comment too? what did you see at wdw??

Yes, it is very snobby to have this attitude. I'm not sure where many of you have been lately, but this is not conducive to WDW. North Americans seem to suffer from "me" disease so much it's sickening as far as I'm concerned. Do I see it more at WDW than anywhere else? At times in the killer heat of July when we travel I do, and I attribute that to hot temps! I also see the same thing at Walmart, driving around my town, watching TV and Hollywood movie stars and the list could go on, and on and on...

The sense of entitlement at WDW is not conducive to WDW, in fact, it's alive and well in this thread and most threads on the DIS! I'm honestly surprised that in 2008 people still think that having money or not having money has anything to do with anything? It's like the people who think skin colour matters, or, sexual orientation... Am I saying that people should behave rudely or inconsiderate? Absolutely not! My family and I are extremely altruistic as we watch what we say and how we act at all times because we share the world with 6 billion other people, not because we have or do not have a certain amount of money, live in a certain kind of house, car, etc. The fact is most people are not like us, but we don't discriminate against those who are not - we would love not to see rude people anywhere, but sadly, that is not reality on the planet earth that I live on.

We all have the right to enjoy our family vacations, whatever our station in life, but we must do so with a sense of respect to those around us. For those to think otherwise is not only snobby, but it's totally unrealistic and discriminatory, IMHO.

You get what you give, and most North Americans I see give a lot of selfish and rude behaviour and so it begins! Tiger :(

WOW!!!! I didn't realize that you had to have a certain income bracket to go to WDW.

You can thank all of the promotions that WDW puts out like a family of 4 can vacation at WDW for $1600.00. When I 1st booked our 1st vacation I expected it to cost alot more too.

Sorry, but I think it is very rude to say that people are "Six Flaggish" I guess maybe next time you should vacation in the "Hamptons" maybe then you won't find us "Six Flaggish" people there.

Oh by the way. I have a Six Flag Season pass and so doesn't my entire family. So yeah, you are being snobbish!!!!

you hear swearing all day starting from the 5th grade, the teachers don't even care.

I work in a middle school in philly and I when I hear them cursing. i surely correct them I tell them say it another way. you don't have to cuss to get your point across. And they respect that. these are some big children, i'm short and they tower over me but they're good kids in need of direction and i will give it to them

I could relate to the OP's "Six Flaggish" comment because I was at a Six Flags with my DD7, 2 weeks ago and we came face to face with some old guy with the F-word emblazoned across his shirt. Doubtful, you'd see that in Disney -- not because of the patrons, but because of the excellent management of the parks. I don't think anyone would get very far dressed like that in a Disney park. I have certain standards that I live by. It has nothing to do with how much money someone makes, and everything to do with behavior.

I get the Six Flaggish analogy. We took our kids on a quick day trip to Six Flags St. Louis a couple of years ago and it was so nasty we haven't been back (with no desire to go). We saw way too much bad behavior from teens with no supervision. Bleech. It was just gross all around. Dirty gross.

I don't think Disney is in that league, but I have noticed that there are lots of rude behavior and it is more dirty than the past.

With all that said we are still heading back and looking forward to it...if someone can tell me a beautiful, perfect vacation spot (with friendly people at every turn) to take the kids I would love to hear about it. Sadly, in this day and age not all people are a kind and considerate as they should be :(

Oh, and we can't afford the Hamptons and I don't think you were being snobby.

I do not think the OP is being snobby. Six Flags NJ is dirty and I would not take my child there. I do think there are many kinds of people who visit WDW but I wouldn't call them 'dirty', just sometimes rude, inconsiderate and selfish ;) . But then again, that can happen anywhere!:goodvibes

Wow Tiger I didn't know you had such a hatred to us selfish Americans. The original OP was just upset that there seemed to be more rude people than usual. And last time I looked there were more than just Americans at WDW.
I too have been in end of June-July and I think the heat is just so unbearable it makes everyone go bonkers. The slightest thing can send you in a tailspin. I'm in RI right now and I am melting away from the heat just reading Disboards. If I was waiting in line for 2 hours for a ride with the pavement melting my shoes, it starts to seem everyone is rude. But I think some people are being to harsh on the original OP. She is not snobbish at all.

Reading the OP's original comment, I didn't think of money or social status. To me, she seemed to mean behavior in the parks. I am around WDW on a weekly basis. I see more and more behavior that I really don't think is family friendly. I realize that not everyone visiting WDW is with children, but there are always a lot of them around. I think people should keep that in mind.

I see clothing that I would never consider wearing outside my home. Women practically falling out of their too small tops, shorts way too short and t-shirts with inappropriate pictures or sayings. I also hear a lot of swearing. The use of the f-word is way up. I hear parents using it to their children.

As for the dirty comment, I do wish more people would use more deodorant. I know it is hard when it is so hot out, but some times it is very hard to handle. I've also realized that people no longer find passing gas as something to try to avoid in a public place. Not long ago, I was in a line in a shop. A guy in front of me just let go. His family just started laughing. They thought it was hysterical. They weren't standing behind him! :confused3 That happens all the time.

The bathroom conditions are often pretty disgusting. I know maintenance tries to keep up with it, but it shouldn't be that bad to begin with. I certainly hope people don't treat their bathrooms in their homes the same way. And...dirty diapers. Folks, I just don't understand when and where people decide to change their babies dirty diapers. I've seen it on tables in restaurants. I smell babies on a regular basis that really need to be changed, but their parents seem oblivious. And, last week, I went into the bathroom at Raglan Road. Someone had stuffed a dirty diaper in one of the toilets. Come on! Who doesn't now that you shouldn't do that? They obviously just didn't care what a mess it made. This is a nice restaurant, so it isn't about those who have and those who don't. It is about caring.

Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with summer and heat. I see this same behavior year round. It is sad to see so many with so little regard for others. I don't know about the Six Flags comment. I've never been to a Six Flags park. I do know what WDW was and is today. Some of the changes are not for the better and it isn't Disney's fault.

What in the world are you talking about? :confused3 Last time I checked, my country of Canada was part of North America along with your country (not including Mexico as I haven't been there). I didn't exclusively mention Americans at all, in fact, I mentioned my own community. Our 2 countries are extremely selfish and "me" centred, that shouldn't be news to anyone!

I'm confused, Tiger :confused3

What are you talking about? She said North Americans. She's talking about a whole continent, not just one country.:lmao:

We just got back from our Disney vacation and I was very disappointed. There seemed to be a lot of rude, loud and inconsiderate vacationers. It made the parks seem more "Six Flaggsish" than Disney. This was my seventh trip, we go every other year, and we are thinking it might be our last for a while. Anyone else feel the same way or am I just being snobby?

I think you are being snobby.:sad2: I know many people who go to Six Flags that don't behave rudely and are not inconsiderate people. You can't expect everyone who goes to a theme park to speak only the King's English and talk in inside voices. I find it hard to believe that in prior trips you have not run into people at Disney yelling or being rude. I have found that people are people, not matter the theme park name on the gate.
