Am I a dope for purchasing a 2042 contract?

For those that currently own at BCV, what has been your experience with booking studios at 11 months during peak times? How hard it is to get one? I’m thinking specifically of Thanksgiving and Presidents’ Day/Princess Half Marathon.

We’ve been kicking around the idea of DVC for a little while now and really like BCV, but typically travel when the kids have school breaks. So just wondering how difficult it would be to get a studio during those busy periods.

Nope, it's where you want to stay and you're only locked in for less than 18 years! :D
This is an underrated reason for owning a 2042...maybe some of us don't want long term commitments! But really the Crescent Lake resorts are so desirable I already own at BCV and recently stayed at BWV and said to my wife...."we need a contract here" as soon as I walked in the room and went out on the balcony overlooking the Boardwalk. Enjoy it and don't think about any of the woulda shoulda couldas

DEFINITELY NOT direct. Some people do buy these direct but I can’t figure out why.
Oh god no. lol

The only way I could maybe see it is if you were short like 25-50 points from being DVC-Y but reallllly wanted to own at BCV/BWV and didn't want any of the actively selling resorts
Even then I’d find it hard to do.

The math works out for the 2042s if you apply a reasonable time value of money discount rate.

Great locations, great point charts.
This is the way.

We added a small BCV resale contract last year bc we love staying there and didn't want to keep taking our chances at 7 months. Personally, I would not buy direct nor finance a contract with a 19 year shelf life.
I’m thinking 15 actual years at best.

Absolutely!!

It is very easy to get a studio at 11 months. I have booked various peak times and (so far) have never had an issue with availability. It doesn’t look like any of the rooms are walked at BCV.

I don't think you're a dope. I'd love to own at Boardwalk.

And given the extra points I have to use when I stay there because there's usually no standard view rooms available, I think you'll probably come out ahead financially compared to someone who buys a longer-dated resort and tries to regularly stay at the Boardwalk with those points.

The way to easy to get reservations with Pixie dust upgrades Post Covid at BWV convinced DW and I to add on there. Trying to find a 100 pt Sept UY resale was frustrating, so when DVD had a 'sale' late 2021 at 'only' $200 pt, we cashed in some mutual funds when market was high and added on. Love, love, love our decision to add-on. At our age (66), we hope to be able to outlive the 2042 date. Did we spend more than what a fiscally responsible person should - YES. However, perspective is necessary. BWV Direct is still cheaper than a divorce.

Pretty sure “still cheaper than a divorce” is the exact reasoning that caused my husband to reluctantly agree to our recent VGC contract.

We bought BCV last year and have zero regrets….well, I have mild regrets that I didn’t buy even more points (but we also own VGF, AUL, and will hopefully soon own VGC).

Oh I know, you'd have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to get there. The things I could see people paying it for would likely be a combination of convenience, impatience, potentially not wanting multiple use years, lack of knowledge about DVC resale, benefits and enjoying lighting money on fire more than the Joker.

The resale math really isn't too bad. Yes it's like ~$14 a point (cost/years + dues... I know, time value of money... it's just a quick estimate) which is kind of high. But it's cheaper than renting points and as other have pointed out you're getting an amazingly low point chart which does help offset and puts the math closer to other resorts than at first glance. Not to mention the unquantifiable joy of easy booking access and extended stays at a prime location. I'm a happy owner of 75 points there, and did not mind the cost nor the short contract.

This thread has me checking dvc4less.com so often for BWV contracts. lol
But the small contracts seemed to have dried up in my UY, point amount, etc

You bring up an interesting point, which I wanted to mention on this thread. My other properties have an April use year, but should I really be concerned with maintaining that if I add on at crescent Lake? I’m thinking maybe not since these points would exclusively be used for those properties I would imagine.

I’m new to this in general, and especially multiple UY, but I would say Use Year matters more if you’re using them on the same trip, not so much as using them at home although I guess if not using them at home it really doesn’t matter much either, they’re just points then.

Better let an expert answer that. :)

Not an expert but I'll weigh in to say that while the majority of my contracts have a June UY, my recent BWV is Dec. I had bid on June UY for months and wasn't getting anywhere.

I did already have a 2nd UY for CCV (Dec UY) but since it is for a FW that I plan to use every year, I wouldn't need to combine with other points. Ultimately, I used the same logic for BWV and went w/ good deal in a Dec UY. I'm not paying a premium to use them as SAP...so it makes no difference to me if I can combine them w/ my June UY. I'll just borrow/bank if the need arises.

You are better off just renting for those resorts. When you calculate what you are paying for the total points you are receiving for 18 years, they are very overpriced.

People often talk about cost per point on a yearly basis, but a better metric is actually your cost per point over the life of your contract. For example, if you’re buying 100 BW points, you’re actually buying 1800 total points. If you buy 100 at RIV, you’re actually getting 4600.
