Am I a bad mom today?

Would you leave work to drive to your DD14's school (having to bring DD1 in the sleet/rain) to bring her a throat drop? She called from the nurses's office saying her throat hurt, but she felt ok to stay in school for the day. I told her to call her dad (doesn't work, although he lives about 12 minutes further from the school than I am) or get a sucking candy from a friend. I can usually gauge the extent of DD14's sickness, and this doesn't seem bad. BTW, today-Sun is my ex's visitation.
Was I wrong?

No, I don't think you're wrong. If she and the nurse think she's well enough to stay at school then I wouldn't bother to go there to bring throat lozengers. They are only going to help for a few minutes and I'm sure someone has got to have a lifesaver or something like that. I also don't think she should call her Dad.

No. You are not a bad mom. If I am going up there she is coming home and/or to the doctor. If she had (more symptoms) a fever, stomach ache, headache, etc., then that is a different story.

Btw, at the schools my kids have gone to, they needed a note for any throat losenge. They only allowed them every two hours during the day. It's considered medicine.
But, candy isn't. Most teachers have been very agreeable to letting the kids have it when they have a sore throat. I love the lemon drops, mints(mild), and butterscotch candies are wonderfully soothing.

Nope you are not a bad mom! But, I question the nurse. If a child comes in says her/his throat hurts, but they dont want to leave and they dont have a fever (a sign of strep) why doesn't the nurse giv eher a glass of warm water with salt and have her gargle? Even if she has to go back and do it twice..it is a quick fix until she gets home.

Also, you are right..if it is your ex's time..she needs to call him.

Hope she feels better!

PS. I have a 3yo and a 1yo and there is ice here and there is no way (unless she really needed to come home) would I drag them out in this!

Seems like the nurse could have done something for her. Our school has the parents sign a permission slip at the beginning of the year giving the nurse permission to give the kids Tylenol for headaches and cough drops. I would also think the nurse would encourage her to drink quite a bit of water the rest of the day.

Sometimes the kids or my ex make me feel like I've not done what I should have. For example, last night my DD14 was at a friends house in my town, eve though it is my ex's night with her. He called me to ask if she could spend the night with me because he was too "tired" to pick her up. He lives one town away. DD14 gave me a hard time because she wanted to sleep over her friend's house since ex wouldn't pick her up. I said no to DD (because it was a school night), and she slept over my house. She complained a while that I was unfair, and other kids her age can do what they want. Sorry....that's their mom's problem.

She sounds like a pretty typical teenager. Don't let her make you feel bad. Watch Freaky Friday this weekend so you can laugh at adolescent behavior and remember that this too shall pass.

I'm also in the - you're not a bad mom - group. I would not have driven to take a throat losenge to her either. Now there have been very few times this year that I have driven to school when she has called because she had bad cramps or she had some swollen body parts from sports and she forgot to take them before leaving for school but other than that the rule in my house is - if you aren't puking, I'm not coming to the school!

I told him what she asked me and he said "I know, I had to go buy them and brought them up there". I laughed out loud in front of him. What a sucker...... he wouldn't pick her up from her friend's house yesterday (see above), but he went to the school with throat candy....
