Always Remember to Love Yourself--A January 2014 PTR UPDATED 9/14 Life Update

Hi! Your story is pretty similar with mine! I started out planning for a solo trip, but then my bestie agreed to come along! Isn't it the best feeling?

Oh and I'm going one month after you, first week of February! Do share about the tour groups situation once you're there ;)

It is the best feeling!!! :thumbsup2
And will do! Honestly I remember a TON of tour groups there both times I went in July so I assume they're going to be around every month of the year. I'm hoping with the marathon they won't be too prominent during my trip! :flower3:

Apparently, July, Jan and Feb are the peak times for the infamous South American tour groups, and honestly it scares me off a bit! LOL. At least we won't melt in the heat ;)

Can't wait to hear the rest of ur planning!

Go figure, two out of those three are my travel months :rolleyes2
They really aren't that bad...providing you avoid them. :thumbsup2
Thanks for reading! I should have some more plans posted within the next few days! :)

I didn't know that DisneyQuest vouchers were now included in packages?! :thumbsup2 Sweet! I've never been but I guess I will allocate a few hours to it at some point. It never seemed worth the almost $50 admission but now I guess I'll check it out. The design-your-own roller coaster simulator looks like a lot of fun!

Now for the gamechanger: my trip may no longer be solo!!! One of my closest friends will most likely be joining me once she verifies it with her schedule and other commitments. I've never been to WDW with people other than family so I'm excited for what is to come!

Did you book through Disney directly? Or a travel agency?
I booked our trip through Disney and if that's the case, it would be really cool if they included the voucher in our package too! :thumbsup2

I've done solo at WDW and yes I did have fun but having someone to share it with is 38475439857 times better!

The ones that are staying include:
Tuesday, January 7--Via Napoli dinner
Wednesday, January 8--Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney dinnerDo you have thier card?
If you are not aware of it you can get a card from this company. It costs 25 dollars to get it but you get a 25 dollar GC for signing up so really its free and you get another 25 dollar GC for your birthday plus everytime you eat at one of their resturants you get points and every 250 points you get another 25 dollar GC they own many other places including Bubba Gumps It is the Landry's select club if you are interested. Sorry for the highjack :goodvibes

I booked through Disney and two vouchers is part of the posted vacation package! I guess they assume that most parties are larger and would have to pay extra money for more admissions, but for parties of 2 or 1 it's a great free deal!

Thanks for reading! Actually someone else earlier in my PTR already brought it up! I'm definitely doing it especially since we'll probably eat at Yak and Yeti as well plus a lot of restaurants in downtown Baltimore (where I'm from) are Landry's owned.

Looks like I finally have some time to get some of my plans on here! I feel like my arrival day is the only day I think is 100% planned--I can't help being a to-do list kind of girl and I'm a huge planner in everything I do. :confused3

With that said, by 4:30 IN THE MORNING Emily and I have to be here:

Since we're going to be on winter break at this point and therefore not in our dorm (two weeks from today until I move back!:yay:) I anticipate one of us will spend the night at the other's house, unless we agree to both meet somewhere in the airport...I guess this is the one detail that I haven't yet worked out :rolleyes1

Our flight leaves at 6:50 a.m. so after security we'll have some time for breakfast. Over the last few years BWI has added some decent places for breakfast in the Southwest terminal after expanding the AirTran concourse, (READ: MANY good places to get coffee ) which is GREAT because the last time I flew out of BWI I saw two MICE (and no, not Mickey and Minnie) running past the McDonald's cashiers and into the seating area. At the time McDonald's was the only place open that early in the morning for breakfast, but needless to say I'm never eating there again :scared:

After a hopefully uneventful flight, we won't forget that DME picks up on the opposite side of the airport from the Southwest gates. Hopefully we'll be able to snag some front row seats so that we can see this better:

And then hopefully quickly we'll pull up to Art of Animation!:dance3::yay:

During both of my previous trips our rooms were ready after checking in, but I don't know what the case will be since I've never stayed at AoA or in a value before. If our room is ready, we'll drop off our luggage there, and if not we'll drop it off at Bell Services. I definitely want a refillable mug (despite the anticipated rising costs and the RFID chips) but I probably won't buy it now unless the room is ready.

We might stop at Landscape of Flavors for something to eat, but regardless we'll be off to Epcot! Animal Kingdom has always been my arrival day park, but with its 5 p.m. closing time, I can't justify going there for 2/3 hours and then heading to Epcot for our Via Napoli dinner ADR.

Regardless of whether we eat something at AoA, I think this will be my opportunity to try my first School Bread in Norway! I assume we'll spend the afternoon doing some low-key World Showcase touring in addition to starting to get my money's worth on Photopass!

Given the fact that we'll have to wake up by 3 a.m. (READ: not sleep at all) in order to get ready and make the drive to BWI if we're at my house the night before (probably won't be a huge difference coming from Emily's) I don't foresee having the energy to do much else after dinner.

We'll head back to AoA, get our rooms if we didn't already do so in the morning, and turn in early. We have six more magical days to go!

ANTICIPATED BUDGET
Airport coffee and breakfast--$10
Refillable mug--$17.99
School Bread in Norway--$2.69
Via Napoli--$30 (pizza and house salad to share, assuming splitting cost here)

Aaaah good plan! And you're so lucky to already have park hours and schedule! Us February people are still biting our nails off in anticipation, while speculating hundreds of conspiracy theories, of course :faint::faint:

After the dozens of hours flight (SHUDDER), I'm planning to do a nice TS meal at a resort :thumbsup2 and just nurse the darn jetlag ;)

Yeah, I wonder what's up with that! I've had January hours before 2014 packages were released and I booked the trip.

And good idea! I was tempted to do a lunch ADR too but I figured that was too risky in case something happened with the flight or DME. At least with early morning departures you're less likely to be delayed because you aren't relying on another plane's arrival time to determine when yours can depart. That's not counting weather of course :guilty:

NON-DISNEY LIFE TIDBIT:
I just finished the first season of Netflix's new series Orange is the New Black. I HIGHLY recommend it and I can't believe I have to wait for more. :sad2:

And now for your regularly scheduled programming...

Wednesday, January 8 is our designated Magic Kingdom rope drop day! :dance3: Low crowd levels, recommended park, I'm game! We'll definitely be in MK a lot throughout the week but this is our main rope drop day so obviously the headliners are the must dos. I've actually never ridden Splash Mountain, but I don't know what the odds will be that it will A. be open or B. won't be too cold to ride.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of Space Mountain. The one and only time I've been on it was 2008 pre-refurb (it was closed during my 2009 trip for that reason) so I don't know how much really changed beyond the queue, but I really didn't like how jerky it was. I'm sure Emily will still want to do it so I'll probably end up riding it, but I'm not quite looking forward to doing that.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is where it's at for me! :cheer2: I'll never forget when my mom rode it with me in 2009. She screamed bloody murder to me throughout the ride (I really hope the kids on it had been exposed to curse words before my mom otherwise I would feel even worse). She ended up having a full blown panic attack and a dad of two kids riding behind us had to help me get her off and onto a bench. A cast member approached us and asked if we needed medical assistance which my mom declined (she is prone to panic attacks, unfortunately, but luckily we know to just let it run its course and she'll be fine). The ride itself was fun, the aftermath not so much, but it's a noteworthy Disney memory nonetheless!

Panic attacks aside, I'm sure we'll catch the aforementioned as well as Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and probably some Fantasyland rides. Enchanted Times with Belle isn't high up on my list to do; is it worth doing when we don't have young kids with us?

Lunch will be a Nutella Waffle Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow! I am SO excited for this! :yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:

On the topic of food, I'm toying with the idea of doing Kona Cafe for breakfast on this day. In order to ensure we finish breakfast and get to MK before rope drop, I assume 7:30 would be the latest I could book. That's a bit early IMO (even if amazing Kona coffee is involved) so I'll probably move it to another morning. Thoughts? I know I'll probably need to get a cab for this too, and paying cab fare that might possibly be more expensive than my meal doesn't seem worth it to me.

Once we get tired or if wait times start peaking, we'll head back to AoA for a break. Maybe we'll get some pool time here, but with January weather it's hard to determine that this far out.

Soon enough, we'll be on a bus to Downtown Disney for our Rainforest Cafe ADR! Now I know this is one of the lower ranked restaurants on property, but I LOVED the one that used to be 20 minutes from my house growing up. It closed when the mall expanded its luxury brand name stores and a part of my childhood closed with it. :( My mom never really liked it and only took me because it made me happy (thanks, Mom! :flower3:) but I know if she ever goes to Disney with me again she'll never want to eat at Rainforest Cafe when there are so many other options that you can't get elsewhere. I guess one of the goals of this trip is to do everything my mom would not want me to do. :littleangel:

Because marathon crowds will probably start appearing as early as Wed/Thurs, I'm planning on avoiding Downtown Disney from this point forward until our last day. I know the marathon has some kind of cool-down event and I would assume the runners that don't have park tickets would hang out at DD pre and post race days. This really isn't a problem since there's lots to do elsewhere, however that means the bulk of our DD shopping will take place before and after dinner this night. I can't complain about a Disney shopping spree. :cool1:

Hi Katie!

My daughter has the same birthday you do! She'll turn 10 on Jan. 12! I'm hoping to be celebrating in Disney also. I hope you have a great run and a fabulous trip!

It is the best day of the year to be born, in my opinion :goodvibes
Thanks for your well wishes! I'm actually not running until January 2015 since all of the races were booked before I picked the dates for my 2014 trip. :(

I can't believe that this time Thursday night I'll be all moved in to my dorm! :cool1:

With that said I'm not sure how often I'll be updating this for the next few weeks (I guess I have to stretch this PTR all the way to January somehow). Emily is my roommate and I cannot wait to spend the next year together!!! We were next door neighbors this past year and this year we're living just one floor under where we met. :thumbsup2

Emily and I have been doing some WDW talking, since she hasn't been in several years and even then that was for a structured school trip. She might end up flying separately from me to get a cheaper flight so I guess we'll have to work out a meeting place. Hopefully our arrival times won't be too far apart so we might just meet at the airport and then take DME over together, but if we're more than a few hours I guess we'll meet somewhere at AoA.) Any suggestions for meeting places at MCO?

We've also been talking about ADRs. She's more enthusiastic about 1900 Park Fare breakfast than Tusker House breakfast, so I guess I'll be dropping the latter. We're still debating whether to do Cape May Cafe for dinner or do 1900 Park Fare for dinner, but other than those I think we're pretty content with our choices.

I went to Arundel Mills Mall (near BWI in Maryland) with her, my former roommate and one of our former RAs last week and I could not believe what I found at their Disney Store Outlet. DISCOUNTED DISNEYLAND MERCHANDISE. Not quite as good as discounted Walt Disney World merchandise, but for $85 I got eight shirts, one sweatshirt, two stuffed animals, three reusable bags and one set of greeting cards. I meant to take pictures of everything to incorporate into this update, but the majority of it is already packed for my dorm! I think I lucked out with pricing! Quite a few shirts were only $2.99 or $3.99 and on top of that everything was an additional 25% off AND last week was no-sales-tax week for clothing in Maryland! I have a regular Disney Store near my house but it rarely has a clearance section of regular Disney Store merchandise, let alone official park merchandise!

I may be in college but I wear more Disney clothes than the average elementary schooler does. No shame.

Never have shame for Disney clothing!

Lucky you for the discounts! I've been hunting for Disney shirts around my town, but haven't found good ones yet. Uniqlo has something that are close enough, but the designs are limited and it's kinda pricey. Poo.

On dining, at one point (when I was contemplating TS), I was also torn between Tusker House and 1900. I'd go for 1900's only for the Stepsisters, but they're only available for dinner. While I heard dinner at 1900 is so loud, messy, and the food aren't as better as breakfast. But at breakfast, they only have boring Alice. Oh the dilemma...

Whatever meal you pick, you DO get to check out the beautiful Grand Flo, tho :thumbsup2

Sometimes Disney Store has some decent discounts online, but I can imagine that shipping costs for you would be waaaay up there. :scared1:

Hey everyone!

My life has been INSANE these last few weeks with moving back to college, starting two jobs and getting back into the academic routine. Disney hasn't been far from my mind this whole time, but unfortunately I haven't had too much free time for the Disboards in a while

I hope all of my readers have been doing well!

So this PTR was severely neglected over the last few months

I would go and update it some more, but I leave for WDW ON TUESDAY!!!!!

I am so excited. This semester was absolutely exhausting and incredibly demanding at times, but the thought that got me through the most was "before you know it, this will be over and you will be in Disney!"

My plans have changed quite a bit since a large amount of my extended family decided to come down during the same week to celebrate my uncle's birthday, which is three days before mine. So now I'm eating dinner with them every night, and will probably be in the same parks as them on most days. They aren't morning people at all and since they aren't staying with me at AoA, I'll do rope drop on my own and probably meet up with them around lunch. We'll have dinner and try to hit whichever park has evening extra magic hours, because who needs sleep in Disney?

One of the biggest additions of the trip is that we're doing the Spirit of Aloha Luau one night! This has been on my Disney bucket list for quite some time but I didn't think I would ever go because of the price (benefits of extended family covering the prepaid bill pixiedust: ). I've seen mixed reviews about it, but since I don't have anything to compare it to, I'm sure I'll enjoy it! My family has gone to it multiple times, so it must be good if they return almost every year!

I hope everyone has a magical new year! I hope to get some kind of a trip report started when I'm there, but I really can't guarantee how frequently it will be updated once I return to campus. :rolleyes2
