He seems to have a following around the DIS so why not a thread. Favorite epsiodes of Good Eats can be disucssed here.

:teacher: Cooking mixed with science.

I love Alton! :yay:
I'm sure I haven't caught all the episodes but I think my favorites are the ones his sister and nephew are in... the boy looks & acts so much like him. Very funny.

I also have a real fondness for the one about Prime Rib! I do it for Christmas every year and I learned SOOOO much from that one episode! Amazing!

I'm so excited to see how popular he has become. When he first started on the Food Network it didn't seem that many people were into him.

As far as a favorite episode I have no idea. But I do want to check out Harry's Market that he goes to so often.

I like when he goes into- I think it's-Bed Bath & Beyond and the same clerk, with a bit of an attitude, is always there helping him. I love how he rates the gadgets out there. It makes me want to go out and get a new mixer or something!

W is the clerks name (not a real clerk -an actress)

I like "romancing the bird" (turkey) and the biscuit episode with his grandmother
Also the oatmeal episode where he does the bad scottish guy making haggis thing is pretty good.

Good Eats is a show I can watch with the entire family and enjoy. A rarity for us.

I love him! We have even seen him in person.
I like it when he has the food anthropologist.

I have a strange, nonsexual, man-crush on Alton Brown...is that weird? I love that show..he's outstanding!

Cheers,
JJ

My youngest has been told he is VERY lucky. Good Eats began airing about two weeks before he was born. Any sooner than that and my son *might* have been named Alton.

I belong to a yahoo group that started as a club and we dubbed ourselves the "Briners". For a time, we speculated that one of our ranks was actually Alton-I sussed him out with talk of cutting my greens with a knife. That was worth it-he gave great advice on buying the knives I now own. (yes, he admitted it was him to the owner of the goodeatsfanpage).

Wow Suzanne, that is pretty awesome! What did he suggest?

This was before he endorsed the Shun knives (which I'd buy-they're great). He suggested Sabatier. We'd pass by the outlet in Yemmassee, SC on each trip to Florida. DH and I would pick out a new knife each time.

At first, we'd both want the same knife to use, so we duplicated. We have two each of paring, 6" and 8" knives. Now that my DH is butchering at work, he's itching to get back up there and buy more knives. Thanks to Alton!

Psst, the linen closet in my bedroom? The one that's not really functional to hold linens? It's got all the gadgets I've bought over the years from watching the show. The ice cream maker, the fondue pots, the rice maker, etc. By bringing the science into it, DH has enjoyed cooking a lot more. :thumbsup2

One of my favorite shows was the CC cookie one - where he made 3 different types of CChip cookies for his "sister" - funny and so helpful -

I used to make the worst CC cookies and after watching that show and "tivo-ing" it to watch again and again I was able to combine different parts of the receipes to make my "Award Winnning Chocolate Chip Cookies" ;)

(okay they haven't won any awards yet :rotfl: - but people have told me to enter them into our state fair)

I have such a cruch on him - I get giddy

I never thought about keeping it a sceret recipe - maybe I should and take it to my grave :rotfl:

Nah

It is

Now this makes a BIG batch - not sure how many cookies but it is huge!!

2 sticks of melted butter
1 cup of butter flavored shortening
2 1/4 cups bread flour (I have used AP and it works okay)
2 1/4 cups cake flour
2 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg yolk
2 whole eggs
2 T milk
3 tsp vanilla

and you just put them together like regular CC cookies
cream the shortening and sugars add melted butter and eggs and milk
then mix in the dry ingredients

and chill -

then bake 350

( am so bad with reciepes - I cook by feel - so I am sorry if they too vauge)

Now you keep this recipe a secret for me will ya ;)

ETA - WHOOPS - I FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!! :rotfl2:

The chocolate chips - I add one bag of semi - sweet and one bag of milk chocolate - but you could do your favorite chips

What a dork I am - see how I need Alton -

DH and I love his show and enjoy him a lot. Whatever Alton does, my DH will want to try. And thus began the tale of us brining a turkey.... :rotfl:

If you ever get a chance to see him in person, go for it! He's very friendly and personable. We saw him at the Food Network Food Show in 2004 with other Food Network celebrities, but we only opted to watch his show. He made egg nog: pasteurized, unpasteriuzed, with alcohol, and as ice cream. Then he demostrated how protein acts with people from the audience. He's like Mr. Wizard in the kitchen...which totally appeals to my educational/vocational background. :)

Later on, we stood in line with his book and he signed it. We got a chance to speak to him.

I love his show!! My favorite episode is the mac and cheese one.

We love Alton Brown! In addition to hosting Good Eats, he does a good job with hosting The Iron Chef. He's quite entertaining. :happytv:
