I've seen several posts regarding backpacks vs fanny packs vs shoulder bags, etc. I'm just curious as to whether anyone has ever used a fishing/hunting/utility-type vest to serve the same function. If so, how did it work for you?

While I have never used one in the parks I have to think it would be more hassle then it would be worth. What all are you planning on carrying in it?

I have seen some people using such a vest, but it strikes me as something that would make you pretty hot if you were at WDW during the summer.

I have a quilted vest that I have used when vacationing in colder climates (Pacific NW, Germany in Dec), but I know that wouldn't work on a normal day in FL. I carry things like my digicam, extra batteries, small notebook (I track my pics), travel wallet, souvenirs (only get pins as souvenirs, regardless of where I am). The reason I've used it in the past is I hate the dragging feeling of carrying these things in cargo pants. We're going in Dec this year, and I was thinking a regular vest might work, but wanted to get additional opinions as I sometimes get tunnel vision.

They sell those kinds of vests here, but they are usually made of lighter weight material with mesh in areas where actual fabric is not necessary - such as down the sides - for extra ventilation. I've seen a few people wearing them at WDW, but not too many. If it's not too hot and your vest is lightweight, I would say go for it. But I wouldn't wear a heavy vest, and I wouldn't wear one if it's as hot as it's been lately (some Orlando neighborhoods have had temps in the 100's in the past couple weeks).

DH bought a vest there that looks a lot like the ones the Disney photographers wear. It has the mesh, and several pockets, including one that zips the whole way across the back. We put the poncho (if we take one) folded flat in that one. He puts our digital camera either in one of the front zip pockets and the little cell phone in one. Works fine for him.

Personally I use a fanny pack (much to sister's horror!) but I think for a guy the vest is an awesome idea!

As with the fanny pack, the vest DOES have an air of geekiness about it, but I found it to be fairly efficient, but that was also due to it reducing the need to unzip jackets and trying to access the pockets and all that. Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing any negative aspects, given that I don't tend to vacation in warmer climates.
