Alright, Alright - I gotta know.... what DOES Beverly @ Ice Station Cool taste like?

I don't want to puke on my honeymoon! Is it really gross? Or just unusual? Also, is it open year round or only when it's hot?

It is REALLY gross - so much so, that I can't even describe it. It isn't something that would make me puke or anything, but it definitely made my face cringe!!

It is just something you have to try for yourself - even though I knew it would be gross, I just had to try it on our last trip - yuck. It was funny watching DH's face, though!

Give it a try, just remember to take a tiny sip of it - other than making a funny face, you shouldn't face any ill effects from it or get sick to your stomach.

I thought it tasted a bit like novacain (sp??) the stuff dentists use. I don't think it would make anyone sick from the taste, but it's got a very bitter after taste and hard to shake. Took me about 4 or 5 more drinks of soda to kill the taste.

This thread made me giggle. The first time we went through Ice Station Cool I tricked my dh into drinking it. I had read about it on the forums but I actually didn't think he'd fall for my acting job. I tried to act really calm and not crack a smile and after he sampled a couple of flavors I said, "Ooo, there's the BEVERLY. That's supposed to be the best!" I almost busted out laughing as he filled his little cup and took a big swig. ROFL thinking about it. His eyes watered and he made a noise in disgust and then the kids and I HAD to crack up and he realized what I'd done. He said it tasted like what rocket fuel must taste like. So on our last trip we brought his brother with us and my dh couldn't wait to try the trick on him but he wouldn't fall for it. It's not that he suspected us of anything, he just tried a couple and wanted to leave. We tried so hard and finally my dh handed him a cup and said, "dang it, we can't trick you but you have GOT to try this." His eyes watered too but neither got sick so just take a small sip.

Beverly's reputation is much worse than the taste. It's very bitter, something you want to sip, not gulp. It's more of an after-dinner sipping drink rather than soda pop.

That being said, I don't touch the stuff anymore. Once was enough for me.

Bobbi - thanks for asking what it tastes like. I do want to try all the flavors but having an idea what it will taste like will make it much easier. A friend from sweden once gave me candy and I had no clue what it would taste like and thought it was gross (those swedes have some interesting tastes). But when I tried a similar swedish candy I kinda knew what I was getting into and it wasn't so much of shock.

I think it taste like Campari - which is a liquor you can get at your local liquor store. - but its much cheaper to try at ice station cool.

I guess I'm the only one that actually likes it! It's my favorite drink there - it is bitter, a bit like a grapefruit soda. I also agree that it tastes a lot like Campari.

Beverly tastes like Rancid Tonic Water to me... As other's have said, definately not enough to make you sick, but to make a face and go eww.. I tricked my SIL into trying it one year on accident actually. I assumed she knew it was bad so I was joking around saying wow, this is the best one here.. She took a big gulp and turned 3 shades of red.. We laugh about it now..

I have a similar crack-up Beverly story. I had read on these baords over and over how disgusting it was. So, my, my parents, my DH, my kids and my MIL all march in Ice Station Cool. I'm at a soda station with my Mom, and we're trying some, and I fill my cup with the Beverly and go "Oh...I read on the boards that this one is soooo good." And I take a sip and keep a poker face. So my Mom takes this big gulp and then was like "Oh YUCK...Ewww..sick!! Hey.................YOU KNEW IT WAS GROSS!!!!" We were cracking up so hard---well, I was, and she was laughing too, and swatting at me at the same time. So then we tricked Bob and my Dad...I didn't dare try and trick my MIL- she doesn't quite have the same sense of humor and I didn't want to make her mad.

I think the reputation is really worse than the taste. Its bitter. I don't like it. But I don't think it would make anyone sick.

Dh said he agreed with the "rancid tonic water" description.

We've tricked our ds and my mom....always funny. Though ds was about 6 when we tricked him and he spit it out! That was gross.

Actually, my Mom likes it. It takes like quinine/tonic water only stronger. If it is indeed quinine, it would be good for muscle cramps.

Speaking up for another in the minority - I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. And I'm usually pretty picky about what I drink. I would have had a second taste, though, with no problem.

There is a soft drink in Maine called Moxie. I have family there and they had me try this once and IT'S BEYOND GROSS (it too taste like some type of medicine)!!! Now when I hear about Beverly, all I can imagine is that Moxie soda and I'll NEVER be able to try Beverly. This was years ago when I tasted this, so perhaps whoever made it went out of business (one can only hope).

Anyone ever try them both who can say if they are alike or not?
