Those of you who are autotrain vets, can you tell me if it is possible to upgrade from coach to a sleeper? If we wait until the day of travel, do they ever offer discounts on upgrades at check-in? When I first bought the tickets I didn't think the extra cost was worth it (DD and DH will sleep ANYWHERE!) But I will be nearly 7 month pregnant and with the recent delays that Amtrak seems to be having I'm a bit worried about spending as much as 24 hours on a train where I can't stretch out for a bit. Still not sure I want to spend an extra $200....
TIA for any thoughts or tips.

We're going down to WDW via the autotrain on September. At first I reserved 4 coach tickets (husband, 3 year old twins and myself). Then I looked into getting a "family sleeper", which we are getting going down, which cost and extra $199. We are taking coach seats on the way back. I think you can wait until the day you leave when you check in to see if there are any sleepers left and they will give them to you at a discounted price (I think like maybe $100). I figured we would take the sleeper going down so we're not too tired when we arrive at Disney. We're really looking forward to our adventure. Good luck in your decision, Linda

I upgraded to sleeper on my last trip at check-in. I was taking the train south (solo trip) from Lorton to Sanford in May. I had coach tickets, but the more I thought about it, the more I didn't want to start my Disney trip tired all day, and who knows when my room will be ready! So at check-in, I upgraded to a 2-bed standard sleeper. The price was exactly what it was on the website, which was $109. No discounted price. It was well worth it, as I had a great night's sleep and just enjoyed stretching out and hanging out in my own room! :cloud9:

Funny thing is, I don't have too much problem going north home in coach, since I guess I know I can relax at my house later that day after driving home and catch up on my sleep! :)

It used to be that they offered a discounted updgrade to sleepers from coach (or to a bedroom from a Roomette)..... BUT on our trip last December, told us that the rules had changed and you now pay excatly what the difference is in their system. The problem with this is that as you get closer to the departure date and they sell the 'cheaper' priced rooms, only themore expensive-priced rooms are left and the difference between your ticket and the new room is very expensive..

For example: We used to (almost always) be able to upgrade from Roomette to Deluxe Sleeper (now called bedroom) at the station for $125, in December it was almots $300 (ouch!!).

This year we booked real early and got a Bedroom R/T, two adults for about $1000.

There is a three tierd pricing system for roomettes and sleepers. As the train fills up, the more expensive they will get. I would call now to insure you get one. :)

I booked 2 one bedrooms with an SUV for our return trip in Aug. I paid $890 now it's over$1100
