ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Yes all longhouses have elevators. But it's not hard to get a first floor room.

We stayed in Nuie for the first part of our Thanksgiving vacation & it doesn't have an elevator. You can take the Rarotonga elevator to the 2nd floor & walk across the walkway that connects the 2 longhouses. This wouldn't have been a big deal to us, except our ONE and ONLY request was that we either have a 1st floor room or an elevator b/c DH was temporarily handicapped w/ a grade 3 calf tear. Oh well!

I just bought a new camera today for my trip "home" in May!!! It's just a point & shoot, but has a better zoom and a panorama feature which I think will be perfect for amazing (I hope) pictures of my favorite resort & favorite place on earth!!! I can't wait to be able to post them. Now, I just have to learn how to use it in the next 117 days!!!

I stand corrected.. that Nui is such a cute building. the only thing wrong with walking across the walkway is its only on the second floor. But it is right next to the GCH.

Lucky Duck! I thought I was going to be able to slip in a quick trip at the end of June because Delta dropped the fares to $128 p/p. Of course, when you over-think it, the offer can be changed--sadly, it was.

I had it all lined up with a stay at Swan for the four of us and we couldn't decide how long to stay and then were worried our soon to be graduating college student might have other things going, yadayadayada. By the time we got back to booking--phhhtttttt. . .airfare was back up again. Guess someone is trying to tell me something about a June trip.

Best days to book airfare are Tues-Thurs. You could always look again this week to see if they dropped down again.

Just wanted to add it starts in the GCH right in front of the fountain with an announcement of whats about to happen and then the hot young stud leads you out to the sidewalk outside and does his schtick. Along with the fire twirling he put the fire in his mouth and lights the other end of his torch with it (the part my kids were awestruck over and led to our conversation).

Can I just say I always add the likes of 'it's the hottie' when talking about the fire performer. One trip my DSis and I were waiting our dinner a Kona when we heard the conch shell 'call' that the fire ceremony was about to begin. She left me there at dinner so she could go get pictures of 'the dude'

The torch lighting ceremony is one of our favorite things to experience at the Poly. It really adds to the atmosphere of the place.

You're better than me. Every time I have gotten a new camera I have *never* learned how to use it before a trip. Makes for some hilarious situations. Most notably one where Stitch was giving me 'pointers' at the 'Ohana breakfast.

I love taking pictures at the Poly.

Polynesian is a good resort for your family!

Your on the correct page to hear that one! Seriously, the Poly is a low key resort with extra large rooms. With captain cooks open 24 hrs a day for snacks and drinks it's perfect for people with teens or toddlers. it has an awesome themed pool with a volcano slide. Get the family there!

If we wind up driving, I'm going to take my good camera and lenses and spend some serious time setting up some shots in several of the resorts. Wide angle lenses, a tripod and Christmas decorations should make for some great pictures.

It's good for us because ... the monorail (can't stress that enough!), the volcano pool, the size of the rooms, the view of the MK/fireworks (doesn't get more Disney than that!), Ohana (breakfast & dinner), the kids enjoy the CS food from CC's, the laid back, friendly atmosphere ...

wouldnt it be nice! I get jealous of you floridians! with your discounts, warm weather, Disney and the beach.. All I have for entertainment at home is the Jersey shore, casino's and snow.. which is not considered entertainment in my opinion. You will love the Poly..

I have an Ohana dinner and breakfast booked during our stay at the Poly. I've started wondering if we shouldn't try Kona as well. My feeling is.. we'll be right there why not? Dh's isn't fussy either way.

So, do most of you like/enjoy Kona and which meal would you recommend?

we like Kona.. but the atmosphere is just tables and chairs. it definatley lives up to its name Kona Cafe we felt kind of stuffed in there(too many tables not enough floor) but the food is excellent..


Shrimp and Scallops - Panko breaded shrimp and pan-seared scallops with sticky rice and Ponzu, spicy guava, passion fruit, and wasabi cream sauces. - $20.99
and
Pan-Asian Noodles - Asian egg noodles with sliced chicken, pineapple, seasonal vegetables, and a House-made sweet-and-sour sauce. With shrimp $17.99. Can be made vegetarian upon request. - $17.99

Whine away! I think mostly everyone here shares your pain! The next trip is never soon enough! In fact, I'll be checking into Poly in 28 days with DD, my sister and 2 nieces for a surprise birthday trip for DD! 28 days seems way to long to wait! Especially because we're all dying to get out of this ridiculous snowy winter!!!

We've eaten at Kona's several times and LOVED the food, especially the creme brulee!!! However...don't be in a hurry...the service that we have had each time has just been okay and it has taken a while for the food. But...we still enjoyed our meal. DH always orders sushi...very yummy as well. If you like fish, you will love Kona's...jmo. If you are staying there, you might as well give it a try On our last three trips we have been to Kona's. On the next trip we decided to try something else, but will certainly return to Kona's when we stay at the Poly again.
