ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Does anyone know if the Polynesian has bed rails available for guests to use? I have 3 little ones and I don't want anyone rolling off the bed, and bed rails would be a little difficult to pack/transport. Thanks :)

Yes they do. We used them during our last visit. Have a great time!

Glad you had a great time. We've had that room on a previous trip and absolutely loved it! Hoping we get similar location next trip.

Hey everyone :)

We got back from our 14 night stay at the Poly last Thursday and loved loved loved it! The room was huge, clean and generally awesome, we had 3rd floor in Tokelau room 3939 and will definetly trying to get it again. We had a nice quiet pool view, could see the monorail pulling into the GCH and being the first door in the hallway was excellent. We loved it so much that we are going to be changing our AKL booking next year to the Poly.

Only complaints I had were the fridge cupboard doors - Im glad I listened to this thread because if I hadnt, then all our drinks etc would have been warm! Only when the doors were open would our drinks be chilled.

Second complaint is that I really feel like there should be more than 1 quiet pool. We didnt use it very much because it did get a little crowded during our stay but I feel that a deluxe resort like this should really have more than their current offerings. I understand it was one of the first built but I live in hope i guess haha.

Captain Cooks was ok at best, the menu really needs more items added to it because after a while we were sick of the same stuff in there.

Other than that it was all fantastic and we cant wait to get back there :D

This thread seems a little quiet lately...must be a lot of folks down there right now. That means lots of TRs to come...

I just made final payment on our stay at the Poly! :cool1:

A little worried about the recent room reports. This is our last Disney trip until 2012 or 2013 and I had to beg DH for it. If we get a nasty, dirty room, it is going to be a big bummer because he is going to be mad at ME because he wanted BC for the entire trip.

Anyone else embroiled in the missing ADR fiasco? I've got 25ish ADRs missing! I had the additional luck of having my final payment deadline come up while the system was down ... payment still not showing up online and it has me concerned. Hoping Disney IT gets their act together soon.

Despite it all, I am still so excited ... and hopeful, LOL.

(Quote) Anyone else embroiled in the missing ADR fiasco? I've got 25ish ADRs missing! (end quote)

Us too! Although we only seem to be missing four of ours, not 25. Yikes!:scared1: I didn't realize it was an issue until I was finalizing a few details yesterday morning. I felt sorry for the poor lady I spoke with at WDW. How many panicked phone calls must she have fielded in recent hours?!? Anyway, she assured me that ours were still in the system somewhere, and would be back up ASAP. I had her check one, just to put my mind at ease. When she had no trouble finding it, I told her I would just wait on the others. That said, I would be seriously bummed if we lost any of our ADRs!

Recent room reports have me stressed too, but trying to remain optimistic. Hope you have a great trip, and that everything goes as planned!:thumbsup2

I have been to WDW 25+ times and have yet to have a room I would complain about, it just so happened that a couple of people had some bad luck at the Poly.
If you searched through the entire Resort board you would find complaints about every resort on property. Go have fun if you have a problem with the room go back to the lobby and bring up your concerns directly to the front desk.
853 rooms average stays of 4 to 5 days close to capacity most of the year a few complaints is to be expected just don't allow them to get away with it if it happens to you.

This thread has been so helpful! Thank you to everyone who has shared all their knowledge.

I'm soooo excited I have to share with someone and this seems the PERFECT place!!!!

I just took the giant leap and upgraded from POP. I have only stayed value or in a timeshare. Myself and my mom (my Disney partner in crime) will be going to Disney for a long weekend in December to see all the Holiday "stuff". I decided to surprise my mom for an early Christmas present and splurge to stay at the Poly. I have decided I'm not going to tell her at all. She will find out when we arrive at the Poly.

Here is my plan... When we arrive I'm going to tell her I am in desperate need of a Dole Whip ASAP and that I'm going to take a quick detour to Captain Cooks to pick one up before we check in at POP (this should be very believable because I am a Dole Whipaholic). Then when we get there pixiedust: SURPRISE this is where we are staying!

ETA: I have reserved a GV room, I asked it to be noted on my reservation that I would like to stay at Somoa in a pool view room if available. Do you think that is a good request?
I'm already going crazzzzy trying not to tell her, oh I hope I won't slip! I'm so very excited I cannot wait!

The complaints are definitely forming a pattern - Tokelau, our preference, especially. It is much more than a couple people. Sounds like a soft rehab, at least, is very overdue. We've experienced bad housekeeping in Tokelau ourselves, but it didn't make us avoid the resort. We'll certainly speak up, if necessary. I just want everyone in my family to be happy with our choices and with minimal stress.

Do the complaints on the Dis Boards get read by Disney Mgmt? Does anyone know? I just wonder if all the complaints made here fall on deaf ears...esp if folks are not complaining in person when they are there.

Right now, I'm just thinking happy thoughts and keep reminding myself how awesome Poly was last year. 3 more days and I'll get to see for myself again!! YAY!

Yep! I have 29 missing ADRs. I'm pretty freaked out. :sad1:

by the way this thread is fantastic! I'm amazed at how great the information is! We're set to go on our first trip to the poly in a little over a month. we've got a theme park view room. Can't wait!!!

I am all about surprises at Disney, but I wondered if you were driving or flying? The reason I ask is that I upgraded my best friend and I from
CBR to GF for her 40th and we drove. I was just going to drive up to the resort but failed to remember that you have to drive throught the MK parking gate to get there and either pay to park or tell the booth CM that you have a ressie at one of the MK resorts. So she found out the surprise before we actually reached the resort.

What a wonderful holiday treat for your mom. I hope you have an awesome trip.

I'm on hold right now trying to make sure my ADRs are still in place. I only booked 5 ADRs but only 2 are showing up online. I got what seem to be perfect ADRs for our itinerary so I don't want to lose them.

ETA: They're all there. The CM I was speaking with could actually tell from looking at the reservations which ones weren't showing up online. Hopefully this means it'll be easy to identify the system problem and correct it.

If you're going to be using DME then you can't do this. With DME you have to get on the bus heading to where you have a reservation. If your mom isn't aware of this then you can always tell her that you want to get on the Poly bus to get that Dole Whip but also be aware that your yellow DME luggage tags will state Polynesian.

To really pull this off, I suggest you splurge on a limo service. That does mean picking up your luggage but IMO it'll be worth it to accomplish what you're trying to do. The only thing you need to figure out is how to expalin to your mom why you're taking your luggage out of the limo when you get to Poly.

Have a GREAT time!!! What a wonderful thing to do for your mom.

Hello fellow Polynesian lovers here is my most recent review...enjoy :goodvibes

Polynesian Resort Review October 1-5th

It was no question where we were going to stay for a few nights before moving over to Bay Lake Tower. We have been staying at the Polynesian for over 20 years. There were a couple of trips in there dabbling at other resorts, but what can I say, we are creatures of habit. Most recently, we tried the Grand Floridian in 2008, while the ambiance is beautiful and it gives you that grand feeling, we still missed our dear little Polynesian.

Even if you were just stopping to visit the Polynesian you will notice the sign our front and the security checkpoint adorned with bamboo and the Bauhaus 93 style script on the signs. The landscaping adds small tropical plants along side larger palm trees. You will see the dark brown 2-3 story longhouses for guests and the resort bus stop near the laundry and Neverland Club. Grab a parking spot to your left and make your towards the GCH. As you walk towards the entrance of the Great Ceremonial House you will spot the koi ponds with small waterfalls trickling down the black craggy stone formations and the tall green plants and bamboo flanking either side of the double doors.

Having been to Hawaii, I can tell you that the resort really does make you feel like you have just landed somewhere in the South Seas. Some people call it tacky; I have seen tacky resorts, this it is not. Though the Great Ceremonial House may need a little updating, there is nothing like walking through those double sliding glass doors for the first time and feeling that rush of cool tropical scented air hit your face. It reminded me of getting of that plane at the Kahului Airport in Maui and smelling that heavenly scent of lush tropical greens, citrus and a light ocean breeze. Even though it is probably not the same smell, it still reminds of that other wonderful magic place, besides WDW. That my friends is the power of smell.

This year there was a new cast member position directing guests to open lines. Bravo, because many guests are arriving for the first time and are unsure of where to go when entering the lobby. Another family stood in front of us not knowing what to do, when the cast member came over and took them to an available front desk person. The Polynesian is unfortunately well known for having a slow moving front desk line, but the check-in process does take a lot of time, especially if the guests are asking a lot of questions or making changes. We took advantage of the online check-in, which became available a couple of years ago. Another bravo, our packet was all prepared, including our keys to the world, resort map, daily schedule of activities and my personalized birthday button! The cast member simply asked a few questions to confirm that we were in fact who we claimed to be and we were on our way. I advise using online check-in if you are able to, that way they have your credit card information and address on file and they just double check how you want to be notified about your room being ready.

It was around 2:00 PM and the room wasn’t quite ready, so we spent a couple hours at Downtown Disney. Shortly after 3:00 PM, a received a text from Disney Destinations notifying us that our room was ready. We were assigned a room that met our requests-Tahiti building with a ground floor room, theme park view, excellent! It was room 1033, located on the far right side of the Tahiti building nearest the Ferry launch. Perfect for us because we like the easy access of the TTC.

Some room shots, pardon our bags!

The room was cleaned very well, no paper on the carpet or dust. The sliding glass door could have used a little tlc because there were some hand prints on the window. I checked for bedbugs, around the back of the mattress, between the boxspring and in the bed furthest from the light and no sign of critters. I thought I would check just for the heck of it. The room smelled fresh and clean overall. The only few items in need of some help were the grounded electrical outlet in the bathroom and the cupboard door on the refrigerator unit was sagging. We should have called maintenance about the ground outlet, but we just dried our hair on the vanity. No big deal for us, but we did alert housekeeping to the issue.

The only issue we had with noise was the marathon that ran overnight on the 1st. Holy cow was it loud and bright. They had spotlights set up and loud speakers playing music and making announcements into the wee morning hours right by the TTC. Needless to say, we did not get a lot of sleep that night. Something to remember for next year!

There were a few tiki torches that were not lighting, but the walk around the resort at night is still amazing. The public areas were clean and free of wear and tear. The landscaping was well manicured and I did notice less carts buzzing around, which was nice. These guys were getting pretty crazy last year driving the Cushman carts all over the pathways and grassy areas. I actually complained about that in a survey they sent me last year, so mission accomplished.

We never did get to the pools because we were so tired at night and busy during the day. The quiet pool looked dead during the day, but the volcano pool was hopping most days by mid afternoon. The resort overall seemed pretty busy, my father and I overheard a bellman tell a guest that they had over 300 check-ins on Saturday October 2nd. Whether or not it was true or perhaps he was making excuses for why he had not delivered her groceries.

The cast members we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Mousekeeping left extra washcloths when we requested them and the room was clean before we returned from the parks everyday by 1:00 PM.

We dined at Kona Café every morning and had good service and great food. We could arrive each day by around 7:50 or 8:00 AM and still make rope drop at the MK or Epcot easily. My dad bought coffee from Captain Cook’s every morning, but we never did grab a bite to eat here, so cannot comment on the food or service. I did notice there was still a number of Polynesian Resort branded items in BouTiki for sale. The items were different from last year, so maybe the cut in resort specific merchandise will be more gradual.

Overall, a fantastic stay at the Polynesian this year. I wish it had been longer as our previous stays, but the BLT villas are very convenient. The resort was beautiful as always, it was nice not to see any refurbishment walls too, but I suppose most of those are at the Magic Kingdom right now! We are already looking forward to returning next year.

Aloha

What a wonderful holiday treat for your mom. I hope you have an awesome trip.

We are flying to MCO and then picking up a rental car and driving to Disney. I actually thought about having to tell the attendant at the parking gate but then remembered since we are annual passholders all I'll have to do is show my AP to get through the gates. Phew!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm renting a car so I'm hoping that will help keep my surprise a little longer.

LowesChevy, I had to smile at this. The first time we took my son to Maui at the age of 8, he got off the plane at Kahului and exclaimed, "Wow, it's just like the Polynesian!"

ETA: Loved your whole report and all the pictures. Thanks!
