ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Ya know, I just realised -- we never actually tried a Dole Whip while we were there. Lots of lovely alcohol-filled libations but no Dole Whip.

Guess I've gotta look into planning another trip.

Honestly, I do keep looking up pricing for around the time of our kiddo's birthday but I'm not sure I can stomach the non-discount rates at the Poly. C'mon discount, c'mon discount.:surfweb: Y'all have really created a monnnnnnstah. :scared1:

EAgerly awaiting a discount here too - our current trip price is CRAZY!

Re: smokers. I can't stand cigarette smoke, actually none of us can. No allergies, just think it's gross and bothersome. Anyways...we've been on 2 1-week stays at the Poly and I never found it to be an issue. I'm wondering if that's b/c we stay in Tokelau and thus enter the GCH typically through that side door the above poster mentioned?

I know 85% of you return to the Poly...we won't be one of them.

It's all about first impressions and let's just say they were more than lacking.

We arrived off of the ME and are met by a bell hop. The word is me, not welcomed. Immediately asked: did you do the on-line check in. I said no we are in Hawaii. He scowled at me and asked why we didn't do it. Ummm....I have this piece of paper that the IPO said to show you instead. He looks at it and still scowled.

The ride to Hawaii....sucked. I'll give him credit for getting there as fast as he could...seriously that ride was scarier than Snow White's Adventure. I'm hanging on to my one year old while praying that the 3,5,and 7 yr olds don't fall out the other side of the seat. I had no clue where anything was at because I was so disorientated as to what direction we were in.

I liked the zero entry pool for my kids. We opted to use it at night because then the music wasn't blasting at us.

I liked all of the beautiful plants, but I found it unnerving to have the tiki music playing constantly.

Why do the smokers have to be at the entrance to the GCH? Yuck. Not sure where to stick them.

When we go back in 2-3 years, it won't be the Poly. I won't be taking up a room at your beloved hotel. You all can have it back. I'm returning where the staff are nicer.

We had the 100% opposite experience last week. I enjoyed the Radio Disney style music at the pool and so did my dd8. We also loved the bingo, trivia games etc that took place throughout the day. Dh spent a lot of time hanging out by the pool bar :thumbsup2 and enjoyed that as well.

If the bellman was driving so fast that you were terrified why would you not ask him to slow down? :confused3

There are smoking sections in all of the hotels and most are located near an entrance/exit. I had a similar issue at the GF last year.

We have stayed at nearly every WDW resort hotel over the past 10 years & have had good and bad staff experiences at all. I'm not saying that you need to come back to the Poly but I wouldn't let a poor experience with one bellman shut you off the the entire staff at a hotel, as they say don't let 1 bad apple spoil the bunch.

Wow - I can't believe our Poly vacation has come...and gone  I would have posted sooner but I've had to basically do two weeks of work in one this past week (because of course I don't really get a vacation - just postpone the inevitable )

Keep in mind this is our 3rd time staying at the Polynesian and we have stayed at other onsite and offsite resorts before. We also travelled with our friends, a husband and wife, and it was their first time at the Poly and WDW.

Check-in:
I did online check-in for all of us. We were the only ones in line and both check-in lines were empty when we entered from the Magical Express bus around 5pm on Saturday. Our request for ground floor Tokelau and rooms close to each other was all granted. There was a very nice person handing out leis and we were all smiles. Great start to the trip!

Longhouse:
I have always stayed in Tokelau and like the location. This time we were in 1938 which is the last room opposite the beach side (last year we had the last room on the beach side and it was FABULOUS). The location actually ended up being really great because there is a sliding door on this side and we just zoomed in and out to get to the bus stop or GCH. The automatic door though got stuck several times during our stay (stuck open). I did notify maintenance and they would fix it right away but it kept happening. No worries for us but we felt bad for maintenance!

Room:
The room was pretty much the same as always! I noticed more wear and tear in the bathroom. The back of the door had peeling paint near the top where the moisture sticks. The doorknob was loose on the door but we could still lock it. And the bathroom vent didn't work. We called maintenance and they said it was working, we just couldn't hear it. I dispute that because I shared that bathroom with 3 other people and there wasn't much ventilation :rotfl2: It frankly was minimal and expected wear on a room so I wasn't phased by it. Everything else in the room was in great condition and worked very well.

Mousekeeping:
There were a few things that weren't done like refilling kleenex and vacuuming (sand from the beach). I tipped everyday with a nice note AND cleaned the room prior to their arrival (I felt bad about them cleaning up for 4 people) but there was no extra effort and the housekeeping was minimal. We never received towel animals and while I was disappointed, I understand this is a random thing and can't be counted upon. C'est la vie!

Grounds:
Gorgeous!!!! There is so much attention to the landscaping and maintenance of the grounds. It really is a pleasure to walk around and enjoy this resort!

Volcano Pool:
We were always able to find a table, even if we lurked for a few minutes :rotfl: The pool was actually a slight bit chilly but still enjoyable. They played some rock music in the afternoons but only one day was the music even slightly loud and it did not hamper our ability to have a conversation. I'll admit that I find the totally enclosed slide a little bit scary :scared1: but we all enjoyed it, especially my son who kept going on it. The pool bar staff looked familiar and I talked to them about past poolside libations. They made all the drinks so delicious and my favorite was the Banana Cabana!

Interesting note: We brought my son's snorkel and mask and the lifeguards would not permit the snorkel in the volcano pool. That was fine and we understood but it didn't occur to me prior that it would be an issue.

East Pool:

The east pool was warmer than the volcano pool and it was much more pleasant to hang out there. Of course there is barely anyone at that pool (maybe 5 to 10 people at a time) so you can find lots of seating. I also like the bathrooms at this pool - easy to get to and clean (and not cold and wet like at the volcano pool). We love the deep end here and did lots of ring diving and jumping in the deep end. My DD6 preferred this pool. My DD8 could care less as long as he is in a pool. My DH & I preferred this pool but enjoy the volcano's pool atmosphere as well.

One more note: I don't usually like hot tubs but oddly enough found myself wishing they had one this trip. It's not a deal breaker, but if they do a rehab on the East pool, I am curious to know if it will involve a hot tub.

Ohana - breakfast & dinner:
Breakfast - this is a well-oiled machine! We liked the characters and the food was ok. My kids enjoyed it. We liked the POG juice, welcome breads/pastries, and the mickey waffles. The bacon is ... sad but edible. The potatoes were ok and the eggs were eggs. If it were just me, I'd grab breakfast at Capn Cooks. But for a family breakfast with characters (and the benefit of already staying at the Poly), it did the trick.

Dinner - OMG - pure gluttony. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere, kids activities, and the food. The service was slightly better than last year but we had the same waiter and knew his M.O. so we made sure to ask for everything when we wanted it or if we wanted more. The food is awesome (how can they make broccoli taste good?????) and the bar drinks are :lovestruc

Kona Cafe - dinner:
Thumbs down. I was willing to give this place another chance since our first time in 2007 it was great. In 2009 it was not. Now, it's even worse. The food portions were tiny, the taste was so-so, the service was spotty, and the limited menu left a lot to be desired. Did I mention that they got rid of the Coconut Kiki Tart???? They replaced it with a pineapple upside down cake that was not edible. I've never eaten breakfast here and am willing to try that, but I won't be having dinner here again unless there are some radical changes.

Staff:
Everyone at the Poly said Aloha, had a smile, and were so nice! Tim in the upstairs gift shop was especially great and my DS8 traded pins with him every night.

Shopping:
I love Bou-tiki (and the upstairs shops). I did see Poly merchandise but did not purchase any. I especially like the generic clothes they have that are beach and resort casual that are not Disney. They have Roxy and other brands. I found a cute white lined skirt for $22!

Movie on the Beach:
What movie on the beach? We asked the front desk who said it was Camp Rock 2 and festivities would start at 8. So we headed over for a nice stroll. It was 5 minutes to 8 and we never saw a movie screen, cast members, camp fire, NOTHING. We walked all the way to GF because we thought maybe we weren't walking far enough. We gave up on it. I'm sure it was somewhere, but we couldn't find it. Only my DD6 was upset about missing it, the rest of us didn't really care either way.

Neverland Club - The unexpected WOW!
We put the kids in the club the 2nd to last night we were there and wished we had done this sooner...and more often! It was so nice to be able to just hang out with the adults and the kids WANTED to get rid of US :rotfl2: They met new friends, ate dinner, watched movies, played video games, and did crafts and they had a great time. They BEGGED us to go back the next night but it was our last night and we wanted to spend it all together. So the cost for 2 kids for 4.5 hours was just over $100. We really didn't want to spend the money and were really hesitant but DH & I just needed some time without the kids and vice versa. It was worth every penny. If I ever have the good fortune to go to the Poly another time with the kids, I will save the money for at least 2 nights here.

Transportation:
Monorail - ROCKS! Buses - so so. Bus to DTD - HORRIBLE as usual. Why oh why don't I practice what I preach and take a taxi to DTD????

Spirit of Aloha:
We actually didn't go to this! But I wanted to add that everyone (including our friends) wished we had booked it on our 'off night' when we didn't go to a park. We didn't even care that people have said it is cheesey. We just wish we had gone since it was right there at the resort and we could sit, eat, drink, and enjoy a show.

Will I go back to the Poly? I certainly hope so!
Would I recommend the Poly? Absolutely!
When's my next trip to WDW? I have no idea :sad2:

Thanks for posting that great trip report.

Just back on Friday after another wonderful stay at the Poly. We were there 6 nights last year (same time) and couldn't resist returning this year for our 2nd trip w/our children (4 nights this year).

We had booked Garden View and requested Tahiti (stayed there last year and loved it...had requested Tahiti and that was honored). When we checked in the thorough and kind CM gave us all the normal info. She reminded us we were on the dining plan and that b'fasts were the best meal to purchase OOP b/c they are generally cheapest. Then she said, "But you will not need to worry about that b/c you have been given a free upgrade to the VIP concierge garden room in Hawaii where a continental b'fast is provided." :wizard:

I was a bit shocked. I had to stand and process it a moment. I had read about free upgrades on here, but I never thought about it happening to us or even requested it at all.

It was a very nice treat for the week. Hawaii is very centrally located so it was easier to get to the monorail, and the kids are older this time so it was nice to be closer to the Volcano pool. I imagined it being louder / busier than Tahiti b/c of it's central location. But we had no noise disturbances at all. It was lovely! :goodvibes

Wishing all of you future Poly guests a wonderful stay as well! :thumbsup2

I'll be glad to check. Don't you love his piece with Mickey and Minnie on the Polynesian beach with the castle in the background? Aloha!

Will do. A resort vacation spent at the Polynesian.....aahhh!

Thanks!

Yes I love that piece, it is hanging in my bedroom. Can't wait to find out what's new at Boutiki. I hope you are having a wonderful time at the Poly. Have a Lapu Lapu for me  Aloha.

Can't please everyone. As my dad always says, "some people will complain if you hit 'em with a new hammer".
More room for our family at the most relaxing, best themed, most convenient hotel at Disney.

Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at the Poly, I hope you took your complaints to the management. But I don't think there was a need to be snotty with the people in this thread, we're not responsible for a rude CM (every resort has them) or smokers hanging around the GCH.

Maiapapaya, I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for having all our backs..and now I've got yours. :flower3:

Hey guys its been a while, but I need some help. We have changed our reservation again. Now we are staying in a Garden View room at the Poly for the first half of our stay and then we are moving over to the Hawaii Bldg for the rest of the trip.

I need advise on what bldg to request for a really good garden view. I did request Samoa and Tokelau to be close to the CL bldg for when we move but not sure since this will be our first time staying in a GV room. I really don't think I want to be on the side with the volcano pool because of noise.

What do you all think?

Thanks.

I would request Tahiti. Bigger rooms, and no way to get a parking lot (garden) view. Fiji is nice, but smaller rooms and if you get 2nd floor you get no balcony.

Thanks Dawgdad, I didn't think about the room size being different, I will make a request for Tahiti, on an upper floor, does Tahiti have two sinks in the bath room?

By the way GO DAWGS!!!

Woo hoo!!! I love AC/DC

 So does my 3 year old; she rocks out to T.N.T. And quite honestly, I'd prefer listening to AC/DC over Hannah Montana any second of the day. But ya know what they say about opinions, eh? :rotfl:

Anyway, when we were there back on the 19th - 23rd, the music was noticeably loud but not bothersome. It was the poppy stuff I tend to not know about nor pay any attention to, Radio Disney perhaps. We ate lunch outside at one of the tables on our first afternoon and it didn't get on my nerves -- which says a lot considering it was probably Hannah Montana et al. To each their own, methinks.

I did our online check in today. We're getting so close!!

Thanks to everyone who posted tips and pictures on this thread. It's made me feel better about my mom's choice to stay at the Poly and I'm really looking forward to it!

Only 353 days til i get to stay at my dream hotel resort! POLYNESIAN here I come!

When I first saw the POLY I was 13 yrs old, July 9th 1978.My parents had 6 children and Mom was a stay at home mom. So needless to say,, we had no money! When I saw the POLY as we passed it,[ on monorail I think] I knew it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.:cloud9: I also saw pamphlets on it around that time. Dad reminded us of how there was no way on Gods green earth we could afford to stay there,,,,ever! That vacation in 1978 was a freebie to begin with [dads work paid for it] we stayed way, way off-site.

Now here I am, going to that "untouchable" resort. Funny how things go. So that is why I must go to the POLY. Almost everyone I know has said its "dated" or "Brady bunch Hawaii". I know it is, I don't care. I have to go. Because it was not possible in my childhood. I HAVE to go!

I went to WDW in January, first time since the 80's, and my [then] husband said it was dated, and tacky. I don't fault him for that. It could be said it is, but I just love it!

Poly club-level, here I come!:cheer2:
