ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

We just returned from 7 nights at the Polynesian, in Theme Park View CL. Below you will find my review:

IPO: We had great experiences with the IPO! While I made the majority of our ADRs before we upgraded to CL, they were able to assist us in organizing a Disney Florist delivery (from DDad to DMom for their 30th anniversary), as well as a Private Dining delivery of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries (from me to DMom and DDad for their anniversary).

ARRIVAL: We received a letter from IPO a few days prior to our arrival, and we were instructed to present it to valet upon arrival. When we pulled up to the security booth, we were also handed a yellow card to hand to the valet. We ended up just handing over the card.

When we pulled into the portico there were 3 Cast Members waiting to assist us. Hidalgo, Mark and Matt. Hidalgo appeared to be the valet manager on duty, and quickly went to check on the status of our room. Matt and Mark unloaded our bags from the car. We were informed that our room was not yet ready (not surprising! It was 10am!) so we stored some of our baggage and kept our carry on bags with us. Hidalgo assured us that he would call CL and let them know we had arrived, but were going to return in a few hours to check-in.

CHECK-IN: When we returned to the Polynesian, about 3 hours later, Hidalgo met us once again, and remembered us! He offered to drive us over to Hawaii, but the weather was so lovely that we decided to walk.

Nina greeted us and said she was glad we had arrived; she had been worried as they expected us hours ago. (Seems valet didn’t communicate that we had arrived earlier). She told us that our room was not ready yet, but that we had been upgraded from Lagoon View to Theme Park View and that we had a lovely room on the third floor.

She asked if I would like to receive a text message alert when the room was ready and I said that would be fine. We relaxed in the lounge for about 45 minutes and then received a text message that our room, 3507, was ready.

ROOM: All I can say is “What a view!!” I thought the view from 3501 last year was amazing, but this was even better. The castle was practically dead center across the lagoon. We could see the Wedding Pavilion, the boat dock, the GF, a bit of Thunder Mountain, the Castle, Space Mountain, the Contemporary and the TTC!

The room was spotlessly clean, and we had a Mickey towel with lei on the bed. I didn’t see any wear and tear to speak of. No dents or dings, no scratched furniture.

We absolutely loved our balcony and spent a great deal of time out there! We watched Wishes from the room at least 5 of the 7 nights.

CLUB LEVEL DESK CMs: All the staff that we encountered were wonderful, in particular Nina, Shannon and Alicia (I believe, sorry!). We were always greeted with an Aloha as we entered and any time we dealt with them for last minute ADRs etc. they were above and beyond helpful.

CLUB LEVEL LOUNGE CMs: Again, fantastic experiences here. Each time we would thank one of the cast members the response was always “It is my pleasure!”

CLUB LEVEL LOUNGE: The lounge was clean, and the food and drinks were constantly being replenished. We found that the majority of guests were respectful and cleaned up after themselves. We did not see dishes or food left on tables or in the hall. We also didn’t experience anyone who seemed to “take advantage” of the offerings.

As an aside, one experience that irked me: There were two families in CL the week we were there that were so rude and intrusive it was unpleasant. Their children constantly dominated the children’s section downstairs AND the TV area upstairs, often at the same time. They also seemed to consider the couch and table closest to the windows as “theirs” because they “told off” other guests sitting in those sections more than once. They were also fairly loud and obnoxious, shouting things like “Hey, beer me!” across the lounge, taking 3 and 4 beers at a time (each!!) etc. They were also very derogatory of the CL and recreation CM’s, complaining about the pool activities etc. Ok, vent over.

CLUB LEVEL FOOD OFFERINGS:

Breakfast – basic offerings were bagels, croissants, cinnamon rolls or mini muffins (bran, blueberry and chocolate chip). Cereals included corn flakes, frosted flakes, raisin bran and fruit loops. There was 2% and skim milk available, along with Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice and Orange Passion Fruit Guava Juice. Apple Juice, Chocolate Milk, Soy Milk and Yoghurt were available on request. DMom raved about the oatmeal, which was offered with various dried fruits, brown sugar and cinnamon.

Afternoon – One salty snack (trail mix, tortilla chips and salsa, popcorn etc.), Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Yoghurt Covered Raisins, Goldfish, Gummy Sharks etc were the snacks each day. Lemonade, Iced Tea, Water, Orange Passion Fruit Guava Juice and various sodas were also available.

Evening – I had the opportunity to speak with Chef Eugene, the new CL chef. He was formerly at Boma as their soup and saucier chef. He has worked at 7 resorts and is enjoying Poly CL so far. He has only been there a month and a half and said he looks forward to changing up the menu in the coming months.

The offerings were fairly in line with the list provided by the IPO, with a few new additions. One night there were Samosas (potato and pea, or spinach and feta). These were sooo yummy! They had a good amount of kick to them as well.

There was also a raspberry baked brie (a bit too sweet for my taste).

The cheeses alternated each night, with the standout favorite being the herb and garlic boursin!

In terms of portions, the items were more bite sized than in Sept 2009, but they were constantly being replenished. We often arrived at 6 or 6:30 and found there was still more than enough of each offering to go around.

Sodas in the fridge were always stocked, I even stopped by at midnight and there were all types available. We took at least 1 if not bottles of Evian a day, and often when we asked for 1, the CM would bring us 2.

The only issue we had with the lounge was on Friday the 10th. We were at the pool and DMom and DDad wanted beer, and when they checked at 11:00 there was no one in the lounge (knocked on the door, no answer). At 11:30 and at 12 this remained the case and one of the Front Desk CMs went up to get the beer for them.

MOUSEKEEPING: We had a fantastic Mousekeeper, Awinda (I believe I may have spelled this wrong). She vacuumed, changed the sheets, dusted and even polished the windows every day. The room always smelled fresh and clean. We received two towel animals (swans and an alligator). Every day she left a note thanking us for our tip. Whenever we ran into her in the halls she gave us extra towels and toiletries.

TURN DOWN: This seemed to be hit and miss this trip. Not that we really cared as we often nap from 3 till 5 and we don’t feel the need for turn down, but we would have appreciated the towels etc.

PHONE: We had the most bizarre issue with our phone! For the first 3 days, any key we would press, whether it was Valet, Mousekeeping, even Wake Up Call, directed us to the front desk, where they asked if we were the Sims family in 6547. Well, the Poly doesn’t even have a room 6547 and we are not the Sims family. The issue was corrected after a few days, but it was certainly odd!

POOL: We never found either pool to be overly crowded and the only day we saw a lot of seat saving was our arrival day. I may get flamed for this, but when we arrived at 1pm, there were 3 towels on the table at the top of the Volcano Pool (near the slide). When DMom and I went to the pool at 3, those towels were still there, dry as could be and not a personal item in sight. Who goes to the pool without sandals, a bag, a book, a room key! Etc. We asked the people at the next table if they had seen anyone recently, they said not since they had arrived an hour and a half ago. We removed the towels and took the table. When we left at 5, no one had claimed the table was “theirs.” I dislike this type of “saving.”

A word about the “pool activities,” we never found them distracting. Sure, there was some Disney Channel music playing, or kids were answering trivia or dancing the Macarena, but it was fun! And not intrusive in the least!

RESORT CAST MEMBERS: Each and every one said Aloha! Many would even start conversations (such as the valet while you waited for your car or a taxi, the cast member in the store checking out your purchases etc.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

I will be posting pictures later tonight.

It sounds like a great trip!!!! I'm looking forward to your pictures.

We were right next door in 3508 last month!! I agree....the view was unforgetable. We were watching POC on DVD the other night and I was telling DH that the music from that movie will forever remind me of watching the Summer Fireworks from that balcony at the Poly

Anyone, have info regarding closing the east [quiet] pool, for remodel? Dates or info.

Thanks so much. We are going in October for 2 weeks and Would like march 2011 but worried about pool situation.

Thanks mky:cutie:

Anyone ever have a regular GV upgraded to CL GV or better yet? I am NOT getting my hopes up, I was just wondering if there are any great upgraded stories out there! I had a good upgrade at BC once from GV to water view, beautiful!

Add another "Like" from me!

Checking in this Sunday too mom2travel, wondering whether this week will go slow-as-molasses or too quick so I'm freaking out by the time Saturday evening rolls around.

I suspect it will be a little of both - really, really S...L...O...W... :hourglass for a few days and then zip! Saturday! and we need to finish packing and all the other stuff that needs to be done before vacation. Hopefully next week takes its time though ;)

TinkerBelle_325... Thanks for the great review! I am getting even more excited for our upcoming trip!!!

Just got back on Saturday and loved staying at the Poly again. We had two connecting rooms, GV in Tahiti. We were directly across the hall from the park view room I had stayed in, back in 2000.

We had a wonderful trip and of course can't wait to go back!!

A few posters have been great about posting a trip report from our same timeframe, so I'll just keep this post short-n-sweet and mention a couple of other things that might be of interest.

1. Someone mentioned this early on, but I wanted to mention it again. If you want to buy water, milk, orange juice to take back to the room...buy it from the gift shops and not Captain Cooks. The gift shops have cheaper prices on these items.

2. If you want a little change up from the muffins, danishes, cinammon roll selection from Captain Cooks, the gift shop upstairs sells several varieties of boxed Entenmann's breakfast items. A box of the iced cinammon rolls only costs $5.39. A single muffin at CC is $2.39

3. I had asked about the temp for the refrigerators in an earlier post. Someone said that theirs didn't have a knob to adjust the temp. That was the case for the fridges in both our rooms. The temp was fine, but I wasn't able to get things really cold, because I didn't pack my needle-nose pliers.

4. Someone had asked earlier (not for sure if it was this thread) whether or not there was a way to 'divide' the bathroom in half with a rod and curtain type setup so their teenagers could have access to the bathroom at the same time. The room I was in, you could divide the bathroom, if you had a 5ft 4in rod. The rod could separate one sink/tub and the other sink/toliet.

5. On another thread, folks have been posting their 'unusual' item to pack. A popular item is an over-the-door shoe rack (with the clear plastic cubies). I couldn't find one at any of our dollar stores, but got one at Lowe's for $8.92. I figured I'd spring for one that was more than a $1, because we'll use it for the beach condo too, and if you google 'shoe racks', these things have 1001 uses! Just FYI though, the one from Lowe's would not work over the door at the Poly, because of the industrial-sized doors. They are too thick for the hooks. So I just hooked ours onto the shower rod and it worked out just fine!

6. And one more little bitty helpful hint...if you purchase your tickets separately from your Disney reservation (like from Undercover Tourist) be SURE to photocopy the back of the tickets. When we were getting our six tickets applied to our room keys, our DD's ticket somehow got 'lost/tossed' in the transaction at the front desk. Never in a million years would I thought I would have needed that photocopy, but I did. Having the serial number made it super easy to replace her 7 day hopper pass!

The Hawaii Building has rooms that encompass all three room view categories. On the side facing the MK you have TPV and LV rooms interspersed. On the side facing the East Pool you have all GV rooms. All rooms in the Hawaii building are Club Level.

poly_hawaiimap.jpg

If you book and pay for a theme park view room you do not have to request a certain building, you will be guaranteed a TPV room. You are certainly welcome to request a building, but the only guarantee is that you'll have a TPV room somewhere at the Polynesian. Building, room and floor requests, etc... are not guaranteed.

You cannot request the Hawaii building unless you book and pay for a club level room, in which case you won't have to request it.

I hope that answers your question! :goodvibes

Well that stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headache: I really love the views from that building!!!!

Thanks for your help!!! I really appreciate it!!! :goodvibes

Since there is a lovely beach at the Poly, did those of you with small kids bring shovels and pails for the kids to play with?

TinkerBelle_325: thanks for the description and the pictures.

I was counting on cheerios being in the CL lounge, but thanks for reminding me to pack my own for my kid who can't have wheat.

Do you remember if they had PB&J Crustables during the afternoon? Did they have evening cordials and desserts and can you tell me about them. Thanks!

I'm not tinkerbelle but I can answer these ones...
During the afternoon Uncrustables were out for a short period but not the entire time. If there are none out you can ask for them and they can get them for you or we would often request them while we were in for breakfast and they would give us them packaged to take with us for the parks.
As for desserts they varied each night. The last week of Aug they seemed to do a lot of mousses (choc, white choc, papaya, cranberry), mini whoppie pies (with choc mickeys on top), brownies, and cookies. All of them were decent but none were to die for for any of us, but all were certainly enjoyable. As for cordials they had out Grand Marnier, Amarula, Kahlua, several wines, various beers (by request) and an alcoholic punch. We're not drinkers at all but I enjoyed the punch and dh liked the Amarula over ice.

We stayed CL and at check in were given 4 buckets and shovels. We gifted them to another family on check out day.

Yes, in 2008. Paid for a GV, upgraded to CL GV. First time at the Poly too!

I hope this hasn't been asked too many times, but does the Polynesian sell containers of the Kona Coffee to take home? Or is it only available to buy at the restaurants?

The Polynesian does sell the Kona coffee beans to take home. As I recall, the beans are pretty pricey, but they are available for sale.

We have been upgraded from GV CL to LV CL on several occasions.

I had no idea we could apply "other" tickets to our room keys - that's great! We normally stay at the Swan or Dolphin because of work discounts so this is a whole new world for us. We do have tickets already and will definately do this. :)

TinkerBelle_325 - Your pictures are magnificent! I especially love the ones from early morning when the water is absolutely still.

TinkerBelle_325: fabulous pictures!!!!! Gorgeous!

dizneechic: interesting to know you were given the buckets and shovels. thanks!

I'm doing pretty well these days, thanks. Well, physically just so-so, but no point in complaining about that. :)

We went to WDW/Polynesian in July and had a wonderful time! It was the 4 of us, plus DS19's GF, and it was a blast (the family pic in my ticker is from that trip). It was just what I needed. :cloud9: Looking forward to your review when you get back! :sunny:

I hope you feel better soon. So glad you had a fantastic family trip in July. Great to see you here. :surfweb:

Since there is a lovely beach at the Poly, did those of you with small kids bring shovels and pails for the kids to play with?

Buckets and pails are sold in Boutiki on the first floor of the GCH. :beach: Watching your children play in the sand with the castle in the background....magical.:wizard:

TinkerBelle_325, your pictures have me dying over here. Literally, you're killing me. :rotfl2: Very beautiful shots! "Our" room, the one we've had 2 years running, was just a few rooms closer to the lounge, so the view is practically the same.

*Wishing for that room one more time!!!*

Just 4 more days and we'll get to see it all in person!

TinkerBelle_325 - Thanks for the photos - fabulous!!!

I was upgraded from GV (cheapest I could get :lmao:) to LV GV. It was super nice and totally unexpected. I was just happy they accomodated my other requests so this was like the cherry on top!

Just got back on Saturday and loved staying at the Poly again. We had two connecting rooms, GV in Tahiti. We were directly across the hall from the park view room I had stayed in, back in 2000.

Thank you so much for those! I can't believe you remembered all of that!!!

Since there is a lovely beach at the Poly, did those of you with small kids bring shovels and pails for the kids to play with?

Yes! And these are great because they will use their hands if they don't have a shovel

I also recommend hanging a light up or glow stick necklace or something on your child (that won't easily come off or hurt them - maybe a barrette for a little girl or a light up pin or a glow necklace if they are old enough and won't hurt themselves with it).

We were at the Poly with several children (ours and our friends) and the littlest boy (4) suddenly went 'missing'. It was getting darker out and we couldn't see him. He was just hiding behind a tree but after that, I made all the kids wear a glow or light up item and we could easily see where all the kids were in the dark!
