ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

IMG_20101021_185201.jpg

just got back a few hours ago from a 5-day, 4-night vacation with my boyfriend. we stayed at fiji room 3312 and this was our gorgeous view. i was so nervous after reading all the recent bad reviews but i was extremely glad when we got to our room. it was quiet at night and very clean. we loved it!

the only "cons" of the room (and cons are in quotation marks because i don't mind at all and my bf doesn't really care but other people may have a problem with it) are:
  1. the shower whistles at a certain temperature but my bf is okay with that because he can tell when the shower is at a good temperature when it whistles
  2. i thought they advertised 2 queen beds but it felt like a full to us but again my bf doesn't mind as long as it's bigger than a twin.

i can't comment on ohana because we skipped our reservations to watch the ufc fight that night. =( then, my bf said kona cafe was a great dinner to end our vacation. i filled up on the bread and the sticky wings and the banana creme brulee. and captain cook's bounty platter was good enough for my bf for breakfast every day. i only had breakfast once where i tried the tonga toast.

bottom line: we would stay there again... except the next time we go to disney, my boyfriend wants to try the savanna view at the animal kingdom lodge.

I wanted to come back and update now that our trip is over. After that night, we never had a problem with mousekeeping. We returned every day to our room straightened, beds freshly made, bathroom spotless. It's odd (and just nasty) that sheets were missed between guests.

I did speak with the front desk and a manager, and when I told him that someone had come and changed the night before, he said he was happy things had been taken care of for us. That was it. Not "I'll speak to mousekeeping" and no apology or anything. I felt like he really blew us off.

So, we come home totally mixed about the Poly. The grounds were so pretty, we loved watching fireworks from the beach, the kids loved the pool slide, the CMs were almost all friendly and helpful, we loved the space of the room and the daybed. The monorail was so handy, and the kids loved playing on the beach. The only wear and tear our room had was a little peeling wallpaper near the daybed. The marina view from our room was beautiful, especially at night.

However, the dirty sheets in a new room really turned me off. Plus, it's soooo busy. I kept reading how relaxing the Poly was, but there were constantly people walking around, especially past our patio in Fiji headed to the Luau. Getting to the monorail could be a pain because we had to walk past Ohana and Kona to get there and it was ALWAYS crowded. Captain Cook's didn't really thrill us, so we only ate there once. It didn't really seem horribly crowded.

Our fridge was not cooling at all (our milk starting "sweating" it was so hot in there) so maintenance came and moved it out of the pantry area and into the room near the desk. After that it worked fine.

I feel bad for being so disappointed. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either :(

We just returned home on Saturday from a stay in Hawaii, and this stay just wasn't as magical as our other stays. I completely agree about the crowds of people. We watched the fireworks on the beach Friday night, and it was packed. We have always been Poly lovers, and have gone back year after year. We had planned to go back in December, but after our recent experience we have decided to give BC a try. I changed our reservation today.

Bean counter, I definitely know that ahhh feeling. 35 more days, and I'll be experiencing it again too. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

I've noticed some of those tiki torches go out on windy nights. Some automatically re-light, and others seem to have difficulty. How I love strolling the grounds with those torches lit at night!

I didn't think it was that windy the last two nights but anything is possible. On Sunday night, a fellow guest walked the path and hit the switch on the four torches that were out. Three of the torches did nothing while the fourth one tried to light several times and eventually shut down. Either the ignitors have gone bad, the supply line is clogged, or the resort figured out how much money they could save by not burning the fuel (the first thing my bean counter mind thought of).

In other Poly maintenance news, a crew was out yesterday and removed a majority of the sod on the north side of Hawaii.

Leaving pre-dawn tomorrow (barring any last minute disasters, knock on wood)!!!!

We've kept this a secret from the kids. Hopefully the surprise goes over well tomorrow at 4:30 am :rotfl2:

Realizing it is going to be really hot the first two days. I'm rethinking some of my plans to accommodate that. Hope the kids are good with more pool time at the beginning of the trip :)

Will report back when I return!

Why does the DISboard state that the only options for breakfast at CC is the following?

Please tell me they still have Tonga Toast, breakfast platters, breakfast sandwich and Mickey waffles!!! We will be eating a good portion of our breakfasts here and it states is was updated 9/10....am I missing something?

Yes, they still have all the hot breakfast food including mickey waffles.

Hello!
We checked in today at 8am and our room was ready. We did not go up to it though, b/c we were trying too make rope drop at DHS, which we did.
The park was very busy and congested, but the waits are not long at all.
The weather is HOT and HUMID!:headache: I am from Charleston, so it is normal for me, but I feel like it is May in Florida, not almost November!
We headed back to Poly to check out our room, let the little ones nap, and unpack around 1pm. Bell services was very prompt to bring our bags. We are ing Tokelau on the 3rd floor. I can see the CR from our balcony. I wanted this building, but did not request it. I figured I would see where we ended up.
There is a great lookout area for the fireworks right outside our building. Looking forward to using that when the kids go to bed early.
I brought the baby monitor, so now while they are napping and DH is at the gym, I can sit in a common area a few feet from our room and read or surt the DISboards.
There are some people digging holes and working underground on something outside our building...maybe pipes. I think I read about drainage problems on there. Maybe they are working on it.
The only wear on our room that I noticed is the paint peeling to the bathroom door. No big deal. The rooms are HUGE compared to AKL!!!:worship:
Can't wait to get out and explore the resort. We may try for MNSSHP tonight or wait til Thurs pm. Not sure yet.
Will try to keep everyone posted!

Did you keep the cabinet doors open for the fridge? If you keep the doors on the cabinet closed then the fridge can't cool properly. You would think the CM's would tell people that when they check in.

When I called to say it wasn't working, the CM on the phone did tell me to try opening the doors, but they had been opened since we checked in and it was hours later and still not cool. Once they moved it out of the cabinet it worked so much better.

I just got back Sunday night after a 12 day trip and I feel exactly the same.

I spoke with the manager once (even though I said it was not necessary, but he came out anyway). After day 3, I was ready to pack up and change resorts. We rented a car and each day it took approx 20 - 30 minutes to find a parking spot. I went to the front desk to ask if there was a specific location for resort guests and she explained to me that anyone staying there or eating there was a "guest" and spots were up for grabs, even though my parking pass stated "M", which in the olden days, meant thats where you were suppose to park. M was a good location, but I preferred H because it was a quick walk back to Rarotonga. Not that any of that mattered, because I couldnt find parking A thru Z! The manager offered me free valet parking for our stay, which I declined. I wasnt there to get a freebee, I want to follow the rules like everyone should have been doing. He said that beginning 10/16, they were starting to check resort IDs for the pool and that should help with the parking problem. I think it did, or coincidentally, everyone left that Saturday and I didnt have a problem the rest of our stay. At the beginning of our trip, the pool was super crowded. I saw the same refillable mugs we bought in 2008 being used everywhere. There was always a line wrapped around the second floor due to Ohana being overbooked (we waited an hour for our 6:00pm ressie on 10/23). We walked to the TTC most nights when we went to dinner at Epcot. The monorail was really only convenient for the MK. I have no idea why getting off the monorail at MK, they didnt have the side enterance opened and we had to walk down to the docks and come back around for bag checks. Getting back to the Poly was a nightmare every night from MK. The dingy of a boat they used held about 30 people. There was always over 100 people waiting. The monorail lines were horrific, 60 minute wait most nights. People have caught on to the fact you can get to the TTC from the resort monorail and often use it as the line was slightly shorter than the express monorail.

We went parasailing at the Contemp. one day and had ice cream at Contempo. What a difference! We stayed there in 2008 and I wish we went back. It was so quiet! Pool area was quiet, playing soft rock music (at poly it was Hannah/Jonas/Justin Bieber all day, but not too loud. I normally sat by the slide and could barely hear it) Contemp. was quiet, the lobby was quiet, no lines at the monorail. It also has much better connections to Epcot, first stop getting back from MK, you can walk to MK. Same size rooms as the Poly, almost identical except for decor. Its really a much better resort.

With all that said. We went to Cape May for breakfast one day and as soon as I waked through the doors I realized that is the place for me. We stayed at the YC before, but never Beach Club. I loved it. Its a quick walk to Epcot. We always rent a car, so no worries about being on the monorail anymore especially since my DD is getting older and she will be at least 8 before we go again. Yes, BC is for me.

PS..I had the same issues with the fridge one day and cracked the doors. It worked fine the rest of the trip. The room was really nice, clean, nothing to complain about. Its just too busy of a resort for me.

Ok, I am trying to understand why you declined. You were having trouble parking, so the CM offered free valet for the week, since you were having trouble finding a parking spot. From what I read into it, the CM was trying to remedy a situation in order to make your stay better. You were asking for a freebie he was offereing, so why decline? I have to admit I don't understand.

Thanks for sharing your point of view. It is always nice to hear others honest opinions.

The conversation started with someone at the concierge desk. After spending literally 30 minutes looking for a parking spot, for the 5th time, I went to the desk just to simply ask if there was a specific location for resort guests to park that maybe, possibly, I was not aware of. I was told, basically, no. She went on to say that people who eat at the restaurants were also "guests". I told her I understood, but also noticed first thing in the morning, the lot is empty, meaning, it gets filled with people who are not staying on property. I told her I saw a couple of people park and hop on the monorail and also overheard a conversation at the pool where a family needed to head back to their resort to get ready for dinner. She said there was nothing they could do if a guest states at the gate they are there to dine. I was nice and polite the entire time saying I completely understood..which I did. Due to the MNSSHP, the fireworks were delayed most nights until 10:00pm. This was perfect timing for the 8:00pm Luau guests, who went out to the beach and pool area after the SoA. They didnt leave until 10:30 or so and when I was coming back from a park at 9:00pm or so, there wasnt a parking spot to be found until after 10:30. I also understand the guard can not say "Liar" when someone arrives with towels, beachbags and floaties and says there are there for breakfast! So I told her that I would wait to see if it got better, but if I decided to, what would be the possibility of changing resorts? She said, let me get the manager. I told her that wasnt necessary, I didnt even talk to my husband about it and if it was something we both wanted, we would go back to the desk. She said "Hold on" and came back with a manager. I was a little embarrassed. I really didnt want to seem like I was complaining. I told the manager that I understood the situation and understood that the Poly was a popular resort and there was really nothing they could do. He said "But there is. We can offer you free valet service for the remainder of your stay". I told him that the main issue was the parking, but also that the resort was a lot busier/crowded that I imagined. He said that they were going to be checking IDs for the pool the next day and that should help with the parking/crowds. I said OK. Ill keep my fingers crossed..we both laughed..I thanked him for the valet parking offer and said I would see how the next few days went and maybe I would be back to take him up on that offer. Ever since, I never waited more than 5 minutes for parking..most days about 2 minutes, or immediately.

Thanks for clarifying. The situation makes more sense to me now.

Aloha everyone! New sod arrived today on the north side of the Hawaii building and some of the torches that aren't working around the resort received a red tape marker.

The CL offerings this evening were disappointing. The featured items were a pork skewer, puff pastry filled with Brie, white chocolate tarts (looked like the leftovers from yesterday), chocolate filled tarts, and another moose cup. The moose cups must not be popular. When we asked what flavor it was on Monday, the CM asked his fellow CM what was in the cups they "throw away". With the amazing desserts at Kona, I don't understand why the lounge offerings are so sad. I do believe the offerings have declined over the last year.

We just got back from a great stay at the poly from Oct 13 to 21. We stayed in Hawaii first floor. It was a beautiful view. No complaints about the room. I noticed a couple of marks on the wallpaper but that's about it. We did have them move the fridge out of the cabinet to get cold not a big deal. The staff was very friendly. The lounge was great. I never felt crowded that week around the grounds or at the pool. We did rent the cabana at the pool which was very nice especially with 2 young children. The weather was beautiful all week and there were only short lines in the parks. We did go early every morning. Also we never had any long waits for transportation. I recommend the poly to everyone.

We were there last week too, and had parking issues as well. If you go immediately to the right when you come through the gate, there is a parking lot behind Rapa Nui. We started using that lot after a couple of days. It was a longer walk to Hawaii, but it beat circling around hunting for a spot.

We also found the resort to be extremely crowded. We have been loyal to the Polynesian for 15 years, but sadly this last trip just wasn't as enjoyable as in the past. I hope they will make some changes, and we will be able to go back some day.

We were in Hawaii last week, and found the CL offerings disappointing as well when compared to the past. When we were checking out, I overheard a couple demanding to be moved to another resort because they were so unhappy. They were complaining about how the service had declined from past trips.

I am surprised to hear about trouble finding parking! On our previous 2 trips, the lots were Wide open!! We pretty much picked the same spot (shaded) both trips, and even when we were gone for the day and came back - we could get the spot. This lot was to the right after you pull in (so if you're at the GCH looking toward the parking lot, it would be over to the left).

I'm curious about a couple other things you mentioned - you said no lines for the monorail at the Contemporary. Did you experience lines for the monorail at the Poly? I saw where you mentioned 60 min. lines at the MK for it to come back - that's LONG!! I honestly don't think we've ever waited more than 10 mins. for the monorail at MK, but we're generally not there right AT closing, and that could be a time of year thing.

Also, you mentioned that the Contemporary has better connections to Epcot? How do you mean? At the Poly, we walk to the TTC (5 minutes) and hop the Epcot monorail.
