Almost two months later and he still stinks!

Max (big messy hound you see in my avatar) got sprayed by a skunk in November. I didn't have peroxide in the house, so we couldn't do the "skunk off" recipe, but shampooed him instead.

Since then, whenever he gets wet, it rekindles the skunk stink.

He finally got out of bed a while ago--where he was sleeping with my 13 yo son (who is still asleep)--and went out in the yard to do his morning business in the snow.

Now he's laying next to me, and I can smell skunk clearly. How long will it take for this stink to go away completely? I have come to hate skunks with a passion! Do these animals contribute anything good to the world? Ugh!

I've used tomato juice numerous times. With 2 dogs it seems once a year someone gets sprayed.

Bottle of peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda and dish soap to get a lather should do the trick.

Oh, I do definitely remember when Cupcake was skunked. It did actually take several months to wear off, probably both because she has such dense fur (husky-type) and because, well, it's skunk We *did* do the peroxide and Dawn mixture thing, which by the way is really gross. It did seem to help but her collar was thrown out and when she got wet we held our breath around her for a while.

Do this. My dog is notorious for getting sprayed by skunks and this is what works for her. It also turns her white...she's normally light brown...hahah! Your dog will smell so good afterwards.

Get some Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover from PetsMart. You drench the stinky areas and let it dry, it really helps. I do have to say that it did take a couple months for the smell to go away completely when Lilly was wet. We went to the Dells for a week and after several days of swimming in the lake the smell finally went away but that was about 10 weeks after the intial skunking.

Wanted to add if you do the baking soda/peroxide, be sure to leave it on for ten minutes before rinsing - might as well just keep rubbing it in to keep the dog as in place as possible.

Although I never used Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, I've used their removers for furniture and rugs - it is GREAT stuff!

How do I get the odor out?
It may be particularly hard to get the odor out of those dogs who have thick double coats. If quick action is not taken it is possible to smell the odor on your dog for up to two years, especially when the dog gets wet.

It is best to bathe your dog with a shampoo before the skunk's sulphuric spray dries on the fur. After bathing you can try some of the following methods...

There are several products you can buy at the store to de-skunk your dog, which I think work best, but one does not always have them on hand when their dog gets sprayed.

Tomato Juice or Mouthwash

A couple old methods used are saturating the dog's coat in tomato juice or mouthwash and than bathing the dog thoroughly with a canine shampoo. However the effectiveness of these methods are questionable and it is said that the tomato juice will leave your dogs coat all red.

Skunks are placid, retiring and non-aggressive. They try very hard not to get in harm’s way. They have a home range of a few hundred acres at most. They are primarily nocturnal and usually solitary – except when mothers are raising their babies. The best part? For a few weeks after it happened, he kept looking for the skunk. He'd go to the same spot where the skunk came under our fence, as if he was going to get the skunk back for spraying him.

He can be very smart sometimes, but this is one instance where he's very stupid. He does not seem to understand that the skunk will get him every single time.

Shave him? Oh wait, you mentioned snow, not a good idea. We shaved my fat cat when he got skunked on our walk. It really helped.... Along with a bath

I see fools spending a ton of cash having landscape companies come and aerate their lawns with equipment. Out here in the country, the skunks do a pretty good job of aerating our lawns with all the little holes everywhere

Ok, I can see maybe if it was outdoor furniture, but how may I ask did your rugs get sprayed by a skunk?
