I was shopping in my local Walmart the other day and wandered over to the diet food aisle.
In the carb free area was a box of candy that said 0 sugar carbs. Of course I had to try them so I bought the Carmel nougat bar. Chocolate covered carmel and nougat, like a Milky Way bar.
It is way too sweet for me to eat the whole bar but I cut the bars into eight pieces and froze them. I just had one piece after dinner and it was DELICIOUS! Chewy, chocolaty, chewy, chewy, it lasted a long time..
Here is the info:
Calories 100
Total fat 5 gms
Saturated fat 3 gms
Cholesterol 5 mg
Sodium 0 mg
Total Carbohydrate 20 gm
dietary Fiber 0 Gms
Sugars 0 gms
Sugar Alcohols 19 gms
Protein 1 gm
the box says 0 sugar carbs but the Carbohydrate facts says
Total Carbs 20 gm
Fiber 0 gm
Sugar Alcohols 19 gm
Net Effective Carbs 1 gm
How can it have 0 Carbs and 1 Net Effective Carb? I just don't get this Net Carb thing. But the candy is delicious and I will have 1/8th piece a day Peggie

Hmmmm, interesting discovery. It looks like one bar is equal to 2 WW points, which would make it a perfectly acceptable dessert item. I think I might have to go find these. Thanks for the tip!

I don't get the whole net card thing either BUT I do know that the Carbolite candy is VERY good. I have tried the caramel nougart one and it is very sweet. Cutting it up and freezing it is a great idea. I have also had the peanut butter cup(bought it for the movies so I didn't feel deprived) and it was delicious. I try to keep one on hand incase I really need something sweet. A lot of people find that these candies stall their weight loss so that would be something to keep in mind. If you find your loss stalling, then try giving up the candy. Just something to keep in mind.

Sugar isn't the only thing that has carbs in it.

Veggies have carbs. Eggs have carbs. Dairy products have carbs. Starches are carbs.

You can have 0 sugar grams, and still have carbs. The 0 sugar grams simply means that there is no sugar in the product.

Net carbs are simple.

Take the total carbs, subtract any fiber grams. If you subscribe to the theory that sugar alcohols and glycerin do not affect your blood sugar, you can subtract those grams from the total count. That gives you a net carb count.

Example:

If your label says

5 total carbs
2 sugar grams
3 fiber grams

Your net carb count would be: 5 - 3 = 2 net carbs

If your label read

20 total carbs
2 sugar grams
5 fiber grams
7 sugar alcohol grams

Your net carb would be 20 - 5 - 7 = 8

You'll always be safe if you count ALL the carbs in whatever you're eating, if it's easier. You'll also be fairly safe if you subtract fiber grams, but not sugar alcohol grams. It's up to you.
