Almost Live Trip Report from California with Photos. (Lake Tahoe Added)

Can I ask what kind of camera you used?

Sure, it's a Fujifilm FinePix S700 point and shoot camera which I bought 4 years ago for under $200. - it's a great little camera. If anyone else has any other questions about Disneyland, California or my trip, I'll be happy to answer as best I can!

Best wishes,
David

Nice pictures!

I got to visit DL/DCA/GCH for a day when I was out in California last month. I can't wait for our VGC stay in May 2011.

Your pictures and additions are just wonderful! We don't get to take our first trip home to CA until May 2011, so we are enjoying your TR. It is helping to fill the void. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Great Report! Can't wait to hear the rest, I hope you'll share Tahoo with us and throw in a few shots of Yosemite too!

First, you are struck by how incredibly similar everything is to Disney World. But then you realize how amazingly different everything is from Disney World. You quickly begin to feel like you’ve been transformed into some sort of anti-Disney particle swirling inside some sort of Disney wave within the Twilight Zone within some sort of time warp within an alternate alien 6th dimention. It’s really very bizarre - I couldn’t stop smiling. The best part is that it’s all Disney - in a very weird, West Coast mentality kinda way.

This is how I feel when I walk into the Magic Kingdom at WDW only in a hot and humid kind of way! :rotfl2:

We ate dinner at “Cafe Orleans” because I read rave reviews for their Monte Christo” sandwich. The description of the “Three Cheese Monte Christo" is as follows: Swiss, mozzarella and Double Creme Brie fried in a light batter and served with Berry Puree dusted with Powdered Sugar.

Basically it was tons of melted cheeses surrounded by that very airy, spongy dough commonly sold at feasts and festivals. This "career" sandwich was served completely saturated in grease - I was horrified to watch many guest "knocking them down" like candy - it was astounding! If you dropped just one of these bad boys into the Gulf of Mexico, it could have easily sucked up ALL the oil from the entire BP spill. Even though I was starving, I couldn’t even finish half the sandwich for fear that my gall bladder would have to be surgically removed while I was on vacation. So much for the Monte Christo.

You need to get the one with the Ham and Turkey, the meats balance out the overwhelming amount of cheese. Two people should split the sandwich that way you can also share an order of French Onion Soup and Mickey Beignets! :thumbsup2

WelcomeHome,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your wonderful trip report.
Love the pictures. We simply can not wait for our first trip to VGC in January!
Your trip report and others like it will make the next 5 or so months a bit more endurable!:goodvibes

Yes, so true - we have been in California for 4 days now and the summer weather is about as perfect as perfect can get - I high of 85 degrees every afternoon with absolutely no humidity and deliciously cool mornings and nights - I'd trade my New York & Florida hot and sticky summer days for your perfect California weather any day of the week - I'm truly jealous!

Best wishes,
David

Actually we have not seen weather like this EVER! They say our lows are lower than have been seen since weather has been recorded. This has been the most delightful summer I can ever remember, we've not needed our air conditioner and usually we hit 100 degress, but have not done so (at least in Long Beach) so far this summer. However, we do not have the humidity so when it does hit 100 it is more bearable!

“California Adventure” park is literally in the Grand Californian Hotel’s back yard - the private entrance is fantastic. How close is it? - well I’d say it’s approximately half the distance the International Gateway to Epcot is from the Beach Club Villas - that close!

The lines are relatively short compared to Disney World. While I realize we visited both parks during weekdays, it’s still the height of the summer “crush.” Despite that, the longest lines (without a fastpass, of course) were only 45 minutes -even for the hot new attractions like Toy Story Mania!

The “California Screamin” roller coaster tossed me around like a rag doll tumbling solo in a cloths dryer - it was fabulous!

Even though I read all the great reviews of “World of Color,” I was sincerely unprepared for the stunningly beautiful and amazing performance. Here’s a glimpse of the elaborate delivery pipe system viewed from one of the “cages” poised at the top of “Mickey’s Fun Wheel.” Keep in mind there is a secondary system of underwater pipes used to create this spectacular show!

Next up - the beauty of "World of Color!"

Well then thank you so much for accommodating me during my visit to your beautiful state!

World of Color is absolutely amazing - it was the perfect finale to two wonderful days in Disneyland:

:goodvibes Bliss... That's how I feel in the waves at VB.

Love your TR. You're a great story teller. Looking forward to more. :beach:

As much as I loved my visit to this wonderful state, there is absolutely no place to park anywhere in California. At Disney’s Grand Californian, the parking lot had to be build on the other side of the highway. It really didn’t matter since every time we tried to park in the VGC parking lot, it was closed because it was full. So we had to park even further away in the Paradise Pier lot.

And when you finally do find a place to park in California, there’s always a fee. Fortunately, DVC guests staying at VGC can park for free. Then when we arrived at Yosemite, there was also a fee to park even though it’s a National Park. The sad part is you have to take a bus from the parking lot in order to get anywhere in the park. Even now that we’re at the beautiful Marriott Timber Lodge in Lake Tahoe, the only parking available is strictly valet!

And while parking in California is a challenge, Yosemite National Park is crazy beautiful:

The park is alive with wonder. It was another gorgeous summer day with hundreds of tourists enjoying all the beauty nature has to offer. It was such fun to hear all the different languages and accents. Campers are allowed in the park overnight and they were everywhere. It was wonderful to watch all the young campers - there were bicycles all over the place - it was great!

Well, it certainly has been an exciting vacation. We've finally arrived at our final destination, Lake Tahoe, where rest and relaxation of the only event on the schedule. And while I'll post some Lake Tahoe photos at the end of our visit to finish this report, I'm going to spend most of my remaining time on the lake and at the pool in between sipping drinks. Thank you all for your kind comments, they are greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,
David

Couple of thoughts..

A) Ugliest bedspead ever.

B) How many times did the pianist play Colors of the Wind? I'm betting at least 20.

*note: if you don't see the humor in this post, you've never stayed at GCH*

That's an exaggeration, I'm sure it wasn't more than 18 times tops! ;)

Oh I'm loving your report. You had some amazing pics from DL and DCA... honestly I've been waiting for these beauties. Haven't been to Yosemite in 8 years and DW and I are itching to get back (we grew up in CA but now live in the midwest. She camped there every summer of her youth on vacation, and I camped on the other side of the Sierra Nevada in Mammoth Lakes - south Tahoe). Absolutely LOVE Yosemite.
