They do certain "chores" because they are part of this family and this is what is expected....clear the table, load the dishwasher, keep their rooms orderly(not spotless), pick up their own stuff and return it to it's proper place, etc. They do get "paid" if they take on a big job like weeding a flower bed or washing the car.
I explained to them that if they began getting allowance, they would no longer get "movie money" or pocket change, they would have to save their allowance to have the spending money. They agreed with us that they have the better deal this way. We'll see how it goes when they are teens, but for now, this works.
