Allergies Vent

Make sure that nobody ever smokes in the house or cars. If you have furry pets (dogs, cats, etc.), seriously consider getting rid of them. If you have central air, be sure to change the filter monthly with a high quality HEPA filter, not the 50 cent fiberglass ones. Have the ducts cleaned annually. Be sure his mattress and pillows are sealed in allergy covers to block dust mites. If there is carpeting in his room, consider removing it and leaving hard wood floors (which get dusted/vaccuumed regularly). If you don't already have one, invest in a good vaccuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, and use it frequently. Keep his room as clean as possible. Don't let it get filled with lots of dust collectors, like knick-knacks and stuffed animals. Keep the house windows closed or else you are just letting all the pollen and allergens in.

ITA.

I am severly asthmatic (both intrinsic and extrinsic) with bad allergies.

Also put an air cleaner in his room. Never open any windows or doors for air. Put an air intake on the A/C unit that goes thru the air filter before entering the home. Remove curtains from his window and only use the vinyl pull shades. Wash all bedding in water above 160 to kill any dust mites. A cental vac is the best for allergies. His bedroom needs to be a "safe" place for him to get relief from his symptoms. If you can afford it put hardwood in his bedroom. Stay in the house when the grass is being mowed. I actually can mow our lawn, but I put on a filter and as soon as I am done my clothes are washed and I take a shower.

I just thought of another one. If you have a basement run a dehumidifier to keep the humidity under 50% to prevent mold growth. Also on the A/C put a variable speed air handler on that is controlled by a humistat to keep the house humidiy below 50% too.

Thanks for the advice. We have no pets and no one smokes. We have hardwood floors except for my bedroom which is carpeted. I do need to buy new mattress and pillowcase covers though. We were seeing an allergist but since he can't take shots anymore, we haven't seen her this year. We are seeing his regular pediatrician, who hasn't swiched his Zyrtec yet, just added the nasal spray and Sudafed. I'm probably going to make an appointmement with the allergist again this week.
