Hi All!

Off-site, I was wondering if any of you have had good experiences with restaurants (local or chains) vis-a-vis food allergies. And if so could I have their names.

Thanks.

I haven't - I generally end up with a hamburger.

but my allergy is very strange - pepper - and chefs these days put it on everything.

some of the foods come with it on them already - seasoning... :confused3

The problem with most chain restaurants is that their food is often pre-portioned anda actually prepared at a central kitchen. This is generally true until you get to high-end restaurants. Sauces are usually pre-made.

I think it might depend on your allergy as to how safe some of the local and chain restaurants are for the person with the allergy.

One of my sons is highly allergic to peanut/tree nuts and we have always been able to eat at McDonalds and Burger King without a problem. There are other chains that have been safe for us locally and we sometimes seek them out when we are traveling - like CiCi's Pizza, On The Border, Taco Bell, Ruby Tuesday, etc. I am not saying that I just LOVE to eat at McDonalds all the time but if I"m really unsure then I feel safe picking up something for him there and he likes it and will eat it. They have healthy choices (like apple slices and milk). I've found most chain restaurants to have some choices that we feel comfortable with.

Of course to the person with a pepper allergy this probably wouldn't apply!

I also like to sometimes carry with me a "Lunchable" - this prepackaged sort of meal for kids that is usually like ham, cheese, crackers and a drink. William is also diabetic along with the allergies and there are a couple of types of Lunchables that work very well for him - not so high in carbs with one even having a sugar-free drink and also peanut-free. If I have one of those, an apple, some yogurt then he is usually happy with that. That is my emergency fall-back position! He is only 4 years old so if this is for an older child or adult obviously that might not be the preferred meal on vacation! ;)

It might help to know what the allergy(allergies) is and if you are trying to plan some meals off-site and looking for safe choices.

One thing you could do if there is a national chain you feel comfortable with, is to go to their weebsite. Most chains have a store locator on their website now where you can put in the zip code (you can find addresses for the WDW resorts at www.wdwinfo.com ). Usually, the store locator will at least give you the address and phone number of that location, so you could call and talk to someone there. Some also have a link to mapquest or something similar so you can figure out where it is.
As was already mentioned, most of the lower end chains have a lot of pre-prepared food that they just cook as needed. Things that can't be pre-made (like eggs) would usually be made on site.
