How does Allegiant handle its open boarding after the priority passengers and passengers with paid seat selection have been allowed to board? Is it free range where everybody runs to get through the doors, or is there some kind of tiers?

No it is not a free for all. Once priority seating and people who have purchased seats are finsihed boarding they begin zone boarding. You are assigned a zone number when you check it. The earlier you check in the lower your zone number will be. They board zones 1-10, then 11-20 and so forth. You are able to pick whatever seat that is open at this.

I flew Allegiant 3 times last year. Never purchased assigned seats, but was always given an assigned seat once we checked in and we (3 of us) always sat together.

Alleginat has a new policy:

Those passengers who do not wish to pay for seat assignments will participate in open seating and board the plane after customers in the pre-boarding group and customers with pre-purchased seat assignments have boarded.

I guess to many passengers were "cheating" Allegiant out of assigned seating fees by getting their BPs for free at T-24.

I suspect the new policy will result in more passengers paying for assigned seats leaving "leftover seats" for passengers who try their luck without assigned seats.
