Allegiant under fire

My thoughts are that anyone flying them should do their due diligence of the airline over the last 6 months with special attention to the last 90 days.

They have one of the oldest airplane fleets in the industry. Old planes break down more often than new ones. That is why they are able to offer low fares is because they bought a bunch of used airplanes. If you are comfortable flying an airlines that has more mechanical breakdowns they sure book them. If not fly on a different airline.

Thoughts? Well, I typically dismiss anything I see on Fox news. However, there is enough in this particular story to make me even more leery of Allegiant that I was before.

Might as well compare them with the other airlines.

Aircraft Incidents and Accidents: https://www.aeroinside.com/incidents/airlines

I looked briefly at the site. Is there any data on the rate of problems by each airline? Obviously the airlines with the most number of flights are generally going to have more incidents. Also I would be more concerned with airlines have a large number of "engine failure" incidents which Allegiant seems to have.

Ditto on Fox news, which is why I was looking for other opinions.

Couple of things.

1) This isn't FOX News network that's reporting this. This is a FOX affiliate. I consider them two different news sources. I trust my local FOX station. In fact, I quoted them in another thread in the Transportation forum.

2) Allegiant flies out of Cincinnati, my hometown airport. So close, we live in the flight path. Southwest does not fly out of CVG. We just booked a non-Disney cruise for Fall 2017. I know of the Allegiant safety problems. We will probably drive to Louisville or Columbus and fly Southwest b

Did Delta stop flying out of what was once a big hub at CVG?

No, but Delta drastically reduced the number of flights they offer from CVG. I don't have any statistics available right now, but I'm guessing they cut about 75% from its heyday.

When I flew a lot for work, I liked using CVG as a connecting point, sad what happened. Now they eliminated the PIT-CVG flight so I can't use it at all. USAirways did the same to PIT.

I would say 75% reduction is about right. We used to drive there from Columbus to fly Delta, but now we just take Southwest out of Columbus unless we're flying internationally.

Allegiant flies from Toledo to Orlando-Sanford. I've been considering it because Southwest's fares to MCO from DTW in late August are way up for some reason, plus they are not offering nonstops then. Spirit doesn't seem much better once the tsunami of fees is added in. Frontier's fares from Detroit are pretty good, but I know little about them. Probably go back to driving it.

Have you looked at going thru Flint?

Southwest's nonstop to/from Flint is running close to $300 roundtrip for late August. I'll keep an eye on that one in case it comes down closer to $250 or so, but that seems unlikely. I know that particular flight has been popular with Michiganders who can't find reasonable schedules or fares at their local airports, and/or can't fly nonstop except from Flint. My concern with this flight is that, like with Allegiant out of Toledo or Frontier out of Detroit, they have the one flight and that's it. If that flight does not go for any reason, it will not be possible to depart that same day on a different flight. Earlier this month, I used Southwest out of DTW (which was nonstop coming back, not sure why they discontinue that in August) on the assumption that if it was canceled, they could still get me there via Midway or BWI or whatever. So I guess my main concern is whether the flights actually happen; as bad as these ultra-cheap airlines are, I figure it's only about a 2 1/2 hour trip so it's worth sucking it up as long as I don't get canceled.
