I like the themeing of the preferred section at the Sports. It is almost a beach theme, instead of a sports theme. Plus, during our stay we were on the back side of the building, so we didn't hear any pool noise. If you end up way in the back end of the resort you would have a long walk to the food court and bus stop. No thanks!
Actually, for my trip next year I've got my heart set on a poolside room at the Home Run Hotel but that's me. ASSp isn't spread as far backwards as ASMu.

Home Run Hotel is our favorite section at Sports. We've stayed in that section twice and requested it back before there even was such a thing as preferred or standard. Our favorite thing about it, is that it is near the "quiet" pool. The way Sports is laid out, most people would have to go out of their way to get to that part of the resort so the pool isn't near as crazy busy as the main pool. We are also big baseball fans here. It's also a quick walk to the main building, just past the Touchdown buildings and you are there! I've paid for preferred at Music and Movies, but Sports is the All Star where we save money because we prefer standard.
Most of the time, but not always. I've stayed at AS Sports twice. The first time I was in a preferred room in the Surf's Up building--first floor king bed, go down to the elevators, turn left, and I was about three doors down facing a courtyard and tennis building. The second time I was in a standard room in the Football building--again first floor, go down to the elevator, turn left and I was in the second room on the back side. My standard room was quite a bit closer to the buses and main building than my preferred room was. You're right though: normally the preferred rooms are closer. I just lucked out.
