All our ghosts have been dying to meet you… Pre-Trip: Update & costume tweaks 9/20

WOO HOO!

Congrats on a great sale price for your air travel.

I wait for a sale price for my long haul and jump as soon as it comes along. I hate waiting around where it comes to air flights.

and now I will completely stop looking at airfare - I don't want to know if the price drops again! :upsidedow

Joining in!

Love your ADRs and can't wait to find out what your costumes will be! I'll be visiting Disney at the end of October while attending a conference in Orlando and am very excited about attending my first MNSSHP! Taking the rest of the family back in January as well.

Welcome! and thanks - I'm excited to start working on the costumes! I have a couple other projects that need to be wrapped up first and then it'll be full steam ahead. I'm excited for you to attend your first MNSSHP!! You will LOVE it - worth every penny of the ticket price just for HalloWishes and the parade alone. I need to find a job that'll send me to Orlando for a conference - I feel like sitting through presentations would be easier knowing you could go visit Mickey at the end of the day!

How were the B&theB show and the competition???
Can't wait to find out what your costumes are - I know they will be good ones!

Well, hello! How have you been?

It's been busy 'round these parts lately. Last we left off, our heroine was being whisked away to the theatre for a showing of Beauty & the Beast.

Ryan snagged excellent seats in the middle of the first row in the balcony. From the higher vantage point, you really could appreciate the full beauty of the stage, sets and movement of the performers. Overall, I loved it. This was my second time seeing a stage production of BATB and our Belle was a dead ringer for Paige O'Hara. My only gripe was the actor who portrayed the Beast played him as a whiney, petulant 5 year old with occasional temper tantrums - not an adult with anger management issues and narcissism.

The stage prior to the show:

it was only fitting that my Disney Princess Dooney & Bourke wristlet came out to play for the evening

don't we clean up nice!

I was a sucker for the souvenier stand and came home with the Broadway soundtrack (shame on me that I didn't already have it) and a lovely ornament of Belle's gold ballgown on a hanger. A few years ago I started picking up Christmas ornaments to commemorate special occasions. It's a lot of fun remembering the how, when and why when you pull it out to decorate the tree!

I also finished a queen size quilt for a client just prior to Memorial Day weekend. This is the best picture I have of it, which was taken before it was quilted and bound. I will never take a commission of that size on that tight of a deadline ever again - especially not in the same month as my regional championship. Live and learn, right?

and speaking of regionals .... that'll be my next post. This was doesn't have too many pictures, but the next one will .... how will our heroine fare?

For Highland Dance, you work your way through skill levels and once you reach the top tier, you become eligible to compete in Championships. The United States has 6 regions for highland, each of which holds their regional championship to determine who will compete at the US National Championship. Each age group sends their top three dancers out of the regional.

For the Midwest, our regional is always held over Memorial Day Weekend in Alma, Michigan. The competition is part of a larger weekend long highland games event that features bagpiping, dancing, heavy athletics, food, music, vendors, etc. It's a lot of fun! If you ever have a highland games in your area, I would encourage you to give it a chance and check it out.

My two students competed on Saturday and did well. One took a 3rd and a 6th in two of her four dances and the other danced beautifully, even though she didn't end up placing - both girls had tough competition in their groups!

I competed on Sunday and ultimately finished 7th overall in our region, just a few spots out of qualifying for nationals and several spots higher than I finished last year. This year also marked the first time one of our younger dancers competed in regionals and she finished 6th overall in her age group.

The only live action shot I have right now:

awards for my age group:

myself and our studio's other regional competitor:

the parents!

the man!

After the day of dancing was done (from registration & warmup to awards, it ends up being about a 6 hour day) we packed up, wandered around the games a bit, caught the last pipeband competing

and headed to the stadium for closing ceremonies. Most highland games open and close the weekend festivities by having all of the pipebands play together on a large field. I've been going to various highland games since I was 4 and watching Massed Bands never, ever gets old for me.

If you click on the still shot below, it should open up a short video clip ....

My dance teacher's husband took this picture while I was recording ... the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?

We also found a new favorite snack at the games this year, which we munched on while listening to the Massed Bands:

They were seriously delicious! I'm not even kidding. I know haggis is the butt of a lot of jokes, but it really is quite tasty and these chips were SO good.

So that sums up most of my Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day Monday, Ryan & I went to workout with our crossfit gym to take on the workout "Murph"

CrossFit has a group of workouts that are named after soliders who have fallen in the line of duty and Murph is one of the most well known. These Hero Workouts are designed to be grueling .... to remind you that even in your darkest, most trying moments of the workout, you are doing it in memory of someone who gave everything for us. Murph consisted of a 1 mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 air squats and another 1 mile run. It was rough, especially on sore legs from dancing the day before, but I was glad that I did it. We had a cookout at the gym with our friends and then spent the rest of the day relaxing.

Disney Related Activities of Note:

Flight info has been sent to our TA to link up our ME arrangements (YAY!)

I will soon be delving into our planning spreadsheets and dialing in our day-to-day plans. Plus I need to look at when I'm going to purchase our MNSSHP and La Nouba tickets before too much longer!

just caught up on your PTR. :)

:welcome: - glad you found your way over here!

How were the B&theB show and the competition???
Can't wait to find out what your costumes are - I know they will be good ones!

Updates posted! :) I can't wait to get started on the costumes. I'm a notorious procrastinator and my costume is going to be fairly labor intensive. I need to get a couple other projects out of the queue and then I can get started ....

I love the pictures of you and your DBF. You look great together.

Congrats on finishing 7th overall. You must be really really good.

Haggis potato crisps??? I'll pass.

aww thank you! that is so sweet of you to say :goodvibes he certainly seems to be a keeper!

and thank you for the congratulations - it's been a long road with a lot of hard work to improve my dancing to this point and I still have a ways to go, but I am very pleased with the progress. I'm excited to see how things go with competitions later this summer and this fall as I work towards hopefully qualifying for nationals next year!

the crisps were good, I promise! Really they had the seasonings that would have been used with the ground lamb .... so the flavor profile was more along that line, than full-on haggis.

What do you consider to be a must-do? Are there any glaring omissions on my list? There are probably a bunch of things missing from both lists, but I wan't to hit the highlights at least for both columns!

Love your two lists! Can't argue with any of those and mirrors closely what my must-do lists look like. :thumbsup2

The one attraction that's a must do for me that I didn't see on yours is the Laugh Floor (Monsters Inc) in Tomorrowland. Fun for both kids and adults and have a great time during the show. We try to go through it at least a couple of times.

oooh! Good one - I haven't done Laugh Floor, but have wanted to. Same with Turtle Talk - those will be added for sure!

I have to admit I really like Maelstrom. One of my unknown must-dos that no one seems to like is Stitch's Great Escape. We're also doing Hall of Presidents for the first time this trip along with Jungle Cruise :).

I feel hesitant about Stitch's Great Escape due to the horrid things people have to say about the chili burp part!

I did Hall of Presidents for the first time on my last trip and have to say that I really enjoyed it. I hope that you get a great skipper for Jungle Cruise - the jokes are SO corny and cheesy, but that is what makes it so great!:goodvibes

Great lists!

I like doing Peter Pan. Nothing like soaring over Big Ben and London.

I think I've been on Stitch just once and I have to say......(wait for it) I actually liked it! I know, I'm in the minority based on what I've read on DIS. And I'm pretty sure that if my kids went on this ride with me and completely freaked out in the process that my impressions would be vastly different. :lmao: The one time I tried it, I went in by myself while everyone else was shopping on Main Street.

I agree with most that the Alien Encounter version was a much better attraction and I LOVED that one. I also think that this attraction (both Alien Encounter and Stitch) would have done much better if they had installed it in DHS rather than MK. Fits better over there.

Great list. I've added mine above!

Great list. I've added mine above!

We do have a breakfast ressie with the 100 acre wood gang :eeyore::tigger:pooh:

and how could I forget big thunder mountain and space mountain?! Kali River and Splash Mountain are maybes ... I hate being all wet with the rest of a park day still ahead of me ... we'll have to see about those!:rolleyes1

Today is the 100 day mark! (based on the countdown ticker I'm using, which counts down days, hours, minutes AND seconds..... if I was doing days only, we'd be at 101...)

So I figure this is as good a time as any to start refining our day-to-day plans a bit more. I'm not necessarily a "do this at 9:15, go here at 9:20, eat here at 9:37" planner, but I do like to have a game plan for what we should try to accomplish each day. I feel like that takes all the "must-dos" and distributes them fairly evenly across the trip so that you leave feeling accomplished, but not forced to do all of them on the last couple of days. This also leaves room for adjustments based on crowds, unexpected things that might spark one's interest, etc.

As my dad always said, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail!:rotfl:

Arrival Day: Saturday, September 28

(or - around the world in 80 drinks .... or more like 8 drinks, but still. It's catchy. Here's some background music for your listening pleasure while you read this update: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3llx6XK0Ew)

We will arrive at our small local airport around 8am (if I get my way!) and have PLENTY of time to check baggage, get through security and relax at the gate. This will be our first time flying with Southwest, so I'm excited about getting two checked bags each! I am the flyer who will pack everything possible into their carryon. I've packed for 4 or 5 day weekends in just my carryon. Not only am I a certified black belt in packing tetris, but let's face it - I'M CHEAP. If airlines built the baggage fee into my ticket and told me it was "free", I'd just go along with it. Pull the fee out separately and I'll figure out a way to not have to pay it.

Not only am I a packing ninja AND cheap ... I'm also STUBBORN.

Gosh, I sound like a bundle of fun. Sorry folks, if you came for kittens and rainbows .... that'll probably show up in another post because, well, who doesn't like kittens and rainbows?

Ahem. Back on track.

We will be taking advantage of the checked baggage, which will be especially nice going down for the MNSSHP costumes - mine in particular. I won't be so worried about wrinkling and such on the way home.

We'll have to figure out breakfast at home or on the way to the airport as there really aren't any good options. There's a little counter service that does bagels, pastries and coffee, but they're not very good. The airport bar was renovated a couple years ago and is quite nice, but I don't know that I'll need a beer at 8am. :rotfl: Then again, you never know!

Nonstop to MCO, hoof it to the fake-o-rail, hop on ME and we'll be on our way to POFQ!

I haven't put in any room requests. This is a small resort, so even the furthest away buildings are very close to the food court and buses. I adore the theming here. The landscaping is gorgeous, as are the fountains, buildings and decor. It'll be around 1 or 2 when we arrive (hopefully) so our room might be ready. One way or the other, we'll head right out to EPCOT!

It's pretty likely we'll pounce on the first few F&W booths that we find as we'll be pretty hungry by then. Ryan probably more so than me. He's a growing boy! :lmao:

We will be meeting up with one of my friends and her hubby who will be driving up from Miami. I am really looking forward to this - it'll be the first that that we'll have the chance to meet in person! We belong to different chapters of the same sorority and met through an online community while we were still collegians. We've stayed in touch through email and facebook and have been friends for about 8 years now. They love Disney and go as often as they can, so when I had our dates, I immediately sent them over to her to see if we could figure out to meet! We'll spent the afternoon & evening wandering World Showcase, chatting, munching and hanging out.

The main focus will be hitting F&W booths. It'll be a Saturday, so lines on any of the actual rides (It's a Small Mexico, Maelstrom, etc) may not be worth waiting in since we'll be back during the week. We'll just see how it goes. I'd like to catch Off Kilter and the new band in the UK (still bummed that it's not the British Invasion anymore, I loved them!)

The night should cap off with Illuminations and we'll head back to POFQ with full tummies and the joy of a wonderful first Disney day!

EDITED TO ADD: I also want to keep an eye on the release of the ticketed events for Food & Wine as there will be one offered on this day for "Scotland: Land of Food & Drink" Tickets are rumored to be either $95 or $115, which is steep, but I would love to be able to participate in this one if at all possible!

Up Next: Day 2 - our first FULL Disney Day!

Hello all read up on your lovey pre trip report. I will also be down around the same time(3-8) and we have the same MNSSHP. I am actually running in the TOT ten miler. Can't wait to see what costume you have come up with. I have not decided but I am leaning towards vanellope van sweets from wreck it Ralph. Or maybe something else. Love all of your must dos, I still have yet to see illuminations(that's a must do this trip) can't wait to see how all your projects turn out.
