All of our VGC stays - 6/2024, 12/2025, 6/2026

We've all gotten our flu shots. We wash our hands constantly. The trickiest part is our son being neurodivergent....he likes to chew on his fingers. So when he's at school or out in public spaces...he's getting all the germs. Ugh. So just crossing our fingers and toes for the next 20 days!

Two weeks out and the forecast is starting to show up on weather.com. Looking like highs might only be in the 60s....possibly lower 60s. And lows in the 40s. If that's the case for the entire trip, we'll be leaving our swimsuits at home this time. At home, I often wear shorts with those temps so I'll probably want those during the day and pants at night. Kind of a pain to have to pack so much but that's life. No washer/dryer this time but looking forward to having one for our trip next June!

I'm also debating how many nights we should stay next June. I booked 7 even though we probably only want 6. But I keep contemplating keeping that 7th night. When we drive, it's basically 6 days of driving and 5 days in the park. It would be nice to have a 6th day in CA so it doesn't feel like more time is spent on the road. If Disneyland offered a 6-day hopper, it would be a no-brainer. But it's too expensive to buy a 5-day and a 1-day, though we have done it before. However, a "break" day to sleep in, swim, do laundry, and maybe visit our wedding chapel might be nice too. I'll just have to keep thinking about it.

It’s a long drive, I’d stay the extra day. Do any resort stuff you might not normally do and browse DTD etc.

We're on the fence about it because our son is so routine based that he might meltdown if we don't go into the park every single day. But we may end up taking 1 day this trip super slowly with more of a "break" feel with walking DTD and checking out VDH. So we'll see how he handles that.

Normally, we get up...go down to breakfast and then head to the parks. So I'm curious to see how he handles it if we decide to visit VDH before parks one day.

Not sure how he’d do at the beach… but Huntington Beach isn’t far for a June trip. We’ve done a day there on our summer trips.

Yeah, I've contemplated a beach visit. We took him once as a toddler but it was February so we just walked around and stuck his toes in the water (he wasn't a fan.) My husband is, sadly, the one who isn't a fan of the beach. I guess he spent too much time there as a kid/teen and is just over it now. Plus he hates fussing with the parking. Ha! But I'm still hoping to convince him sometime.

Our trip was overall pretty good! Some bumps here and there though. I think I'll organize my pictures soon so I can get them added to this thread. But for now...I'll just start by writing about our first day - just a travel day and definitely our worst day.

Day 1 - Sunday, December 7th

First, I'll mention that the night before our trip, our son got really upset. If you're new here and didn't ready any earlier stuff - our son is 12 years old, autistic, and minimally verbal. So the night before, he says "road trip" in an excited voice. I reminded him that we're flying this time. It's been on his schedule as flying and we've mentioned it a lot so I'm not sure why he said road trip. So he gets super sad and this made me very stressed out. It was a rough evening.

The morning of the trip arrives and he's thankfully in better spirits and seemed pretty excited. Oh, another thing about my son...lately, he's been taking FOR-EV-ER to eat at mealtimes. So he has his breakfast around 7am but didn't fully finish until almost 8:30. Not great when we were essentially planning to eat an early lunch before takeoff. (This will be possibly relevant later....)

We got to the airport at 9:45. Got our bags checked and everything really quickly. Faster than we planned. Our airport is currently undergoing construction and food options are limited. We still wanted to just eat something before boarding though since food at our layover airport (Phoenix) isn't great either and we would be limited on time.

We brought some food from home for our son and myself and my husband grabbed a pretty terrible sandwich at the airport. I didn't expect our son to eat much but he actually ate a lot of what I brought (which was essentially some things we pack in his school lunch - green pepper "slices", grapes, pretzels, yogurt.) Once done, we headed through TSA pre-check, which was fast.

Our flight boarded on time. The flight was 2 and a half hours or so. Our son did well. Happy and just relaxed.

1767048481261.jpeg

Once we got to Phoenix, he started to seem kind of "blah." He can't really tell us how he feels so it's all a guessing game. I was hoping he was just tired or something. Our next flight boarded on time. The plane was much hotter than the last one. Thankfully, it was a shorter flight, about an hour and a half, I think.

1767048505821.jpeg

Unfortunately, he didn't perk up on the flight. He just seemed more and more "blah." We're finally getting close to landing at John Wayne airport....and he looks like he's going to throw up. We quickly grabbed a bag and took his mask off. Yep....he threw up. Only a little but I felt so bad for him. He was looking out the window a lot during the decent as we tilted back and forth a lot so we thought maybe it was from that, combined with how hot the airplane was and the fact that he ate so much the first part of the day.

I was so happy to be on the ground and off the plane at that point! We quickly got our bags and headed to the ride share area to get an Uber to the hotel. I was so stressed he'd throw up again in the car! Thankfully, that didn't happen.

Got to the hotel and we still hadn't been assigned a room so we went to the front desk. It was about 4pm and I was so thankful they said our room was ready! Room 4504.

1767048521577.jpeg

As we were unpacking and settling in, our son ended up throwing up again. So we just relaxed for a bit to see how things would go for the evening. One problem is that he is VERY stuck on routine and schedule. So even when he's sick at home, he still wants to eat because it's part of the routine. At home, it's easier to just give him some soup or something. But sadly, our grocery delivery hadn't arrived (I did add soup to it at the last minute.) Then...he started asking for dinner. Ugh.

The plan had been to get pizza at Napolini so we just decided to go grab some and hopefully he wouldn't force himself to eat any. The line there was insanely long and took forever. But thankfully we made it back to our room safely. He was actually in a fairly chipper mood at this point so we were hoping maybe it really was just from the flight!

Sadly...he DID end up eating some pizza.....and shortly after...threw it all up. Then he took a quick shower and fell asleep at 8:00.

Our grocery delivery was supposed to arrive between 6-8pm. It didn't arrive until 9:30. I wasn't happy about this at all! But once it finally got there, my husband and I decided to call it an early night as well.

Oh wait...one good thing! Around 8:30, we got a knock on the door and it was a woman with a little Mickey cake on a tray. I thought she had the wrong room. But nope! It was a surprise from a friend of ours. Very thoughtful and did put a positive ending on a not-so-great day. She even included a small watercolor painting she made for us. So sweet!

1767048537816.jpeg

So yeah...that was our travel day. Did I ever mention how much I HATE flying and the stress of it all? I much prefer the 3-day drive to California!

Day 2 - Monday, December 8th
Because of our son throwing up the night before, the plan was to just take today slow and wait and see how he seems at breakfast before deciding what to do. I had been checking his temp and he had no fever at all or anything like that. He actually woke up twice in the night, around 3:45am and 5am....giggling and sort of talking (just repeating random words, as he likes to do.) But he went back to sleep until around 7:15 or 7:30.

We got up and just sort of hung around the room until he asked for breakfast. He seemed okay so we decided to head down to Craftsman. We got a table outside. The inside area was actually a bit crowded. Our son didn't end up eating much, which isn't that rare for meals on vacation. He just ate cantaloupe and wasn't interested in anything else. We weren't going to force the issue, of course. After that we went back to our room. It was around 9am. We were basically just on "watch" for any upset stomach signs from him. He was just happily playing.

Around 10:00 he started asking about the parks. So we decided we would give it a shot and just avoid anything too bouncy or too spinny. And the first sign of any stomach issues...we'd go right back to the room. I'm happy to report, he ended up being fine all day. And my husband and I never had any illness either so I don't think he had a virus or we likely would have caught it. Phew!

I love the seasonal pictures in the windows at Downtown Disney.

We let our son pick the first ride and to our surprise, he chose Pinocchio. I guess it shouldn't have been a huge surprise because he's been watching the movie a lot lately. But I don't think he's ever chosen it first. Thankfully, there was a short line so we didn't need to book a DAS return for it. (Yes, we wore masks inside the buildings, for the most part.)

1767391207030.jpeg

After that we hit up some of his other favorites - Peter Pan (DAS), Casey Jr., Mr. Toad, Small World (DAS.) I really love the Christmas overlay at Small world!

It was close to 1pm at this point and we decided to grab lunch. We went to Pizza Planet, which is basically my favorite QS place. I love the fusilli! I was holding my breath to see how our son would do with lunch. He picked spaghetti. I asked the employee if we could get the sauce on the side (it can be hit or miss if he wants sauce or plain.) She said they mix it all up together and we'd need to wait 10 minutes so we told her never mind, we'll just take it regular. We knew there was no way he would want to stand there for 10 minutes. She walks off to get food and comes back a minute later to tell us they actually just made a batch and haven't added the sauce so she got us plain noodles. Woohoo!

He ended up eating all of the noodles, plus baby carrots, and an orange cup I brought with us since he doesn't like the Cutie's oranges that come with the kids meals, and some of my husband's teriyaki noodles. A really decent lunch for him!

After lunch, our DAS was ready for the Haunted Mansion. But we decided to take the train from Tomorrowland to New Orleans square so that was a nice little ride.

We rode the Haunted Mansion. I do love the overlay even though I prefer the regular version. The sun didn't do my photo any favors. Ha!

1767391565899.jpeg

After this, our son wanted to take a break so we headed to the front of the park. Stopped at Starbucks on Main Street for some Frappuccinos on our way out. (I would have preferred a hot drink since it was Christmastime but it was around 80 degrees out!) Line was long but not unbearable. We were back in the room around 2:30pm.

To be continued.

My mental health is taking a bit of a dive so to cheer me up, I'm going to continue with my trip report.

Day 2 - Continued
Around 5:00, we decided to head back over to Disneyland. Our timing for our breaks this trip was just...bad. We need to make an effort to avoid going back into the park around parade time. We've never had this much trouble before! We wanted to head to Fantasyland but we got caught up in the crowds. It took forever as we would get held up waiting for the parade to go by.

1767911536424.jpeg

We finally made it to Alice, one of our son's favorites. Then we road Storybook canal with a short wait. But getting from Alice to Storybook was more of a pain than usual because of crowd control too.

After that, we decided to get dinner at Golden Horseshoe. We decided to sit upstairs since there were less people. Food was "meh." Tried to get a picture of my husband but he decided to lean out of it so it ended up looking like I was taking pictures of strangers. I liked the garland they had up though so at least I got that in the picture.

1767911769913.jpeg

I really love being in the parks at night when things are lit up. That's one downside of our summer trips, many nights we end up leaving the park before it gets that dark.

Also, check out my husband's dorky shirt that just says "Disney Town." 🤣

1767911824133.jpeg

After this, we went on the Jungle Cruise with a DAS return. Then Snow White with a DAS return.

Here are some nighttime pics...(not sure how to make them less blurry when I add them to posts.)

20251208_202601.jpg

It was around 8:15 and our son wanted to ride Autopia...which means....it's the last ride of the night. This became our routine on previous trips and it continued for this one.

I'm so glad we have DVC and stay on site now. Yes, we had many good trips staying on Harbor. But the walk through DTD to get to our room is much better than having to go across the street. Some people say Disneyland Resort doesn't have a "bubble" like WDW, but I disagree! I actually feel more in a bubble at DLR since I'm not taking a bus anywhere.

1767912149319.jpeg

(Is the above fountain always off in winter? I missed seeing it on.)

We made a stop in the gift shop before heading to our room.

Saw a bit of WOC before bed too.

1767912520035.jpeg

Overall, it ended up being a great day. I was slightly on edge every time our son ate anything but it turned out okay. He was his usual, upbeat self. Phew! (Can't say the same about day 3 through.....)

Oh, and before our trip I was so on the fence about what to wear for the weather. On this day, it reached around 80 degrees so we had on shorts and short-sleeved shirts. At night, my husband and son switched to pants. I stayed in shorts and just put on a sweatshirt, when needed. I think it got down to the 60s in the evening.

Day 3 - Tuesday, December 9th

We didn't make it down to breakfast until almost 9:30.

Stopped to look at gingerbread house first.

1767913095353.jpeg

Once again, our son didn't eat much but that's life. We went over to California Adventure first on this day. Just went through the Grizzly River side entrance. Our son just seemed a bit "blah" this morning so I was nervous about whether or not he was feeling sick or something. He can't tell us so it's always a guessing game.

We went on Little Mermaid first, with a bit of a line but tolerable. Our son picked Monsters Inc. as our first DAS to go on after LM. But before that, we stopped at the DVC center to get some of the 70th post cards. When I asked, the CM wanted to see that we were direct members but I was confused thinking we didn't need to have benefits for the post cards. But it turns out, she thought I was asking about the Zootopia post cards. So she gave me the 70th ones....and then gave me the Zootopia ones too.

Love the DVC Mickey carving.

1767913552339.jpeg

When we got over to redeem our Monsters Inc DAS return....it was closed down.

1767913705397.jpeg

So our son's mood went from just kind of "blah" to totally upset. He was very quiet and on the verge of tears as we walked over to use our DAS-multi pass on Toy Story Mania. Right before we were getting on, he was almost fully crying. I felt so bad. I asked if he wanted to go back to the hotel but he said no. So we just got on the ride. He did perk up a tiny bit while riding, at least.

My husband took a picture of our room from Pixar Pier. Kind of.

1767913869643.png

After this, Monsters Inc was back up so we grabbed a DAS return for it and headed over there. I was hoping he would get happier after riding but he was still pretty blah.

Then we went to ride Luigi's. For DAS, you walk through the exit. When we got up there, we saw the ride was down but they were doing the sequences to get it up and running. We decided to wait. It was iffy but our son managed and we were able to get on. He was only "meh" about it, which made me sad because normally he loves this ride. And I'm sad that this ended up being the only time we made it on Luigi's this trip.

We went to Flo's for lunch next. Normally, we sit on the side of the building where it's less chaotic but it was so sunny and hot that we found a table in the shade out front instead. Unfortunately, our son struggled a lot this meal. He didn't like all the people hovering around our table. So he barely ate anything and was upset most of the meal.

Afterward, we went to ride the Inside Out ride which has become a new favorite of his. We finally got some really smiles and giggles out of him today!

One reason we think he may have been upset is because we had mentioned that during break we were going to visit the Disneyland hotel. We contemplated not doing it but in the end...just decided to go for it.

It was around 2:30 when we left through the "secret" exit near Goofy's sky school. Then we walked over to tour VDH.

To be continued.

Day 3 - Continued
We walked over to the Fantasy Tower at the Disneyland hotel and went to the DVC office. The person there said whoever we needed wasn't there right now. (Oh yeah, earlier in the trip, I stopped by the VGC DVC office and asked if we needed an appointment to get a tour and they said no.) But then this other person who looked like he was leaving (had his jacket and backpack on) said he could walk us over to the DVC tower so we followed him and chatted a bit.

When we got to the DVC building, he told the employee there what we needed and then he left. The guy at the counter said he would call someone to give us a tour and it would maybe be about 10 minutes so we just went to the little lobby area to wait. It really only ended up being a few minutes.

1767996583790.jpeg

20251209_142240.jpg

The lobby area was nice. Quiet and clean. I really liked the mural and the retro Christmas tree. They could have used a few more Christmas decorations but that's okay. It was still a nice little area. Not sure if any of the chairs are comfortable because I was sweaty and didn't want to leave a mark so I stayed standing. 🤣

The guide was super nice. He asked us a lot about our DVC experience so far and was especially interested in why we chose BRV over CCV. He was informative and not pushy at all. Oh, and apparently they aren't allowed to say ANYTHING about Lakeside Lodge. I just mentioned it when we were talking about future purchases and he just kind of smiled and said he can't even comment on that place at all.

First we saw 2 studios - Sleeping Beauty themed and Tiana themed. Then we saw a 1-bedroom. Those were the only room types we asked to see. I really liked them. They were so bright and clean. Especially the bathrooms. My favorite aspect of the 1 bedroom was probably the tile above the tub. I also liked the open layout of the kitchen a lot. Plus, purple and green are my favorite colors so I just liked the overall appearance of the room.

My dislikes - I wish they had regular railing on the balcony. The glass doesn't help my fear of heights on a higher floor! And I'm not a fan of the frosted glass door the toilet is behind. Would prefer a real door but at least there's a second toilet so not a big deal.

I wish I had actually sat down on the couch and bed to just get a "feel" of the space more than just walking around in it, if that makes sense. So I keep checking out the virtual walkthrough on the Disney site as well as videos to get a "feel" for it more.

After we were done, we walked back toward VGC. We decided to time our walk from the VDH lobby to the entrance into the Grand Californian. There was no line to get through security so the walk from points A to B on this map took us 6 minutes.

1767997863860.jpeg

Later in the trip, we timed our walk from points B to C (DVC wing elevators) and it was 3 minutes. So essentially, the walk to the VDH elevators would be approximately 3 extra minutes from the parks if we stay there instead of VGC. (Though obviously if we take the monorail, that would cut it down.)

Anyway, we didn't go straight to our room. We stopped at Starbucks again. We did this every day before our break as a little treat for us.

Our son still seemed a bit cranky during break and I noticed his hand on his head in a way that wasn't typical for him. With this lack of language understanding, it's hard to get a real answer if you ask him questions like "does your head hurt" or "what hurts" or anything like that. He did say yes when I asked if his head hurt but there's no way to know because I could ask him that any day of the week and he'd likely say yes. But I had purchased some chewable tylenol before our trip and thought...it can't hurt to give him some. His first time with chewable instead of liquid...he wasn't a fan but he ate them!

And you know what...about an hour later, he seemed to be more like his usual self! So maybe he really did have a headache afterall. At that point, we decided to head to the parks. It was about 5:30. Park was pretty darn crowded this evening!

I love the tree on main street.

1767998239905.jpeg

1767998253608.jpeg

The first thing we did was grab a DAS return time for Mickey and Minnie's railway. While waiting for that, we went on Pinocchio. Then we headed toward Toon Town.

Is there anything better than Small World lit up for the holidays??

1767998326758.jpeg

After MMRR, we went to Pizza Port for dinner. Yes, we eat here a lot. All the tables were full so we took our trays and sat over near Tomorrowland Terrace. Our son did pretty well, ate some spaghetti with sauce this time, some teriyaki noodles (sad to see that yesterday these have been removed from the menu), and some oranges and carrots.

Next up was Alice with a DAS return. Our son's bad mood from the first part of the day was definitely gone at this point. Woohoo!

1767998552634.jpeg

Then we did Star Tours with a DAS return. I was slightly nervous about going on not long after dinner but he did great and laughed the whole time. Then it was time for Autopia. Unfortunately, as we were put into our numbered spots....there was a problem with a car somewhere on the track. We ended up having to wait quite a while and our son was nearing his breaking point when it started back up.

Thankfully it got moving and he enjoyed the last ride of the night.

Crowds were nuts as we headed toward main street. We took the "behind the scenes" exit to the right of Main Street to get out a bit quicker. Not very scenic but definitely better when you don't want to get stuck in the crowds waiting for fireworks!

1767998744913.jpeg

We were back in our room by 9:15. Ended up watching a bit of WOC again. kind of looks like the park is on fire here.

1767998790527.png

The second half of the day was much better than the first. Still no idea why our son was upset. Could have been any number of things. But he just gets like this sometimes on trips and we just try to roll with it.
