I thought I would share my experience with canceling travel plans due to Covid, since my situation is a little unique. I had saved up my American Express rewards for a round trip flight from Chicago to Tokyo on All Nippon Airways, and I was super excited for two reasons: firstly, it would be my first trip to Japan, and secondly, I would be flying on one of the world’s best airlines. It was a bucket list trip, and I couldn’t wait!
Well I had booked my flight in October, and in November, I lost my job. Then in February, Tokyo Disney closed due to Covid. Lastly, in April, I accepted a new job and moved from Milwaukee to Minneapolis.
I was able to have my award ticket refunded, and the miles are good for three years. Taxes and fees will be refunded to my credit card, which will actually help offset my moving expenses. However, I think it’s absolutely hilarious that I will be flying out of Chicago, because the flight from Chicago to Tokyo flies over Minneapolis, and Minneapolis has a nonstop flight to Tokyo on Delta.
Long story short, the trip didn’t turn out as planned. Anyone who is affected and has to cancel or reschedule their travel, I sincerely hope that when this is all over and it’s safe to travel again, your new trip is even better than the original plan!
Cheers!
